This may have been answered already but I missed it if it has been posted -

1 -Did they show any info on this at CEDIA?

2 - Does it play SACD

3 - If you happened to buy their $6000 AVP prepro - what do you do about the Denon Link 3 that this new BR player uses?

I don;t know about anyone else but I am tickled pink by this announcement--and this is why--this could be the player that causes me to retire my 5910 to accessory room use--Since my preamp is not hdmi compatible (parasound c1) I am sick of changing the analog inputs from the blu ray player to the 5910 when I change from movies to music and I do not want to introduce any extra crap into the signal path with a switcher. Additionally--one of the initial criticisms of the 5910 was the lack of balanced outs. I would echo the desire to have both the ability to use the stellar internal dac's for external use and also the need for a really good analog stage. Nonetheless, this player seems like the silver bullet panacea if it were to include all these things. I will be in the store on day 1 if and when this player finally arrives--I had been planning on getting the 3800 and switching between the 5910 and 3800 for music/movie use but this one sems well worth the upgrade.

1) No, All that was said is expect an announcement at CES

2) Yes definitely, DVD-A and HDCD too, DenonJeff confirmed this in an interview. Will also have balanced Ananlogue Stereo out and a superb 7.1 analogue out.

3) DenonJeff also confirmed they intend to offer a upgrade to the Prepro to support the nextgen Denon Link this player will use. (AFAIK If Software or Hardware and cost were not mentioned)

I'd like ILink and VC-1 DVD support too (Would also like HDDVD but this is confirmed as not happening).

Thanks so much for the answers! I haven't bought an AVP or D2 V.2 yet. I can get pretty good pricing and while this muddies the water a bit more for me, I really like having options. I might be best off waiting a bit longer to get my new prepro until Denon makes that upgrade info more public for the AVP. If it is a hardware upgrade, hopefully they'll go the extra mile and upgrade the AVP to hdmi 1.3c as well. That would make it easier for me to lean towards the AVP in my decision process. I realize there is always something new coming along but since I only buy once every 8-10 years I really like to pass certain bars before I make the purchase.

boe.. I had an interesting conversation the other day with someone who is intimately familiar with the HDMI and BDA.... I know a lot of people are expecting 1.3c to "solve" compatibility issues, but it seems at this point they are still far off from that goal, and 1.3c is in the pipeline...

I have to say, that I've owned a lot of 1.3 gear in the last year, and almost all of the handshake issues have gone away... the issues that persist seem to always be at the fault of the source unit (i.e. audio drops) and have all been fixed by firmware on their end..

I'm with you... looking at the AVP vs. D2 v.2... Hmmmm...

Like most complex communications protocols, there are several layers to HDMI. The lowest layer has to do with the way the signals are formed on, and detected from, the cable, and deals with signal timings, "equalization" to handle reflections, and all sorts of nitty gritty low level details like that.

That's what HDMI V1.3b and V1.3c were trying to clean up. It's fundamental to get this right of course, but it by no means guarantees that other, higher level stuff won't still get screwed up.

[In particular, EDID problems will likely still exist.]

The low level signal stuff is even more critical to get right if you are using the higher bandwidth options of HDMI V1.3 -- i.e., 1080p/60 or "Deep Color".

Seth

And it will be all the more complex because of that. Imagine the regression testing that has to go into something like that! Imagine the potential for bugs and the endless firmware updates. I just don't see the point of it. I'm a cinema-only person and the 3800 is perfect. While the 3800 ain't cheap, this would be completely unreasonable when I don't care about SACD and DVD-A. If they want to make this in addition to the 3800, great, but it shouldn't replace it. Otherwise you put a premium blu-ray player even more out of reach for those who want one.

If your a cinema only person you will be wasting your money, like you said your 3800 who will be perfect. But this player is more for the people who want not only a BD machine but also want SACD, DVD-A, HDCD, Realta, balanced outs. Persronally we don't know the full specs of this machine on what it has to offer so I guess once the specs are out in the open, people then can decide wether it suits there needs or not.

Since nobody seems to know for sure just what the heck the Pioneer is actually doing (if anything), it is hard to answer this question.

But we do know some things about the Denon. In addition to what was said, the player may include some lube so things go easier once the player suffers an early death and the tech support staff screws you over on a continual basis.

Will this be BD "audio only disc" 3.0 profile compatible? Or at least capable of upgraded to one? What about i.Link audio (well... I guess everyone is dropping this so no hope? )

Best to wait for specs as Franin says ; but just to illustrate the compatability of profile 3.0 this edit from wikepedia may help;

^ c Profile 3.0 is a separate audio only player profile. As of 2008-06-26, only one known Blu-ray record has been released and it has been confirmed to work on the PS3.[61][62]

It has the potential to supplant sacd/dvd audio ;time will tell..

Well, if it will have the same A/V quality of the 5910 for DVD, CD and SACD/DVD-A in addition the BD, this is obviously THE player to buy period.

Every current Blu-Ray player is supposed to be able to play "audio-only" Blu-Ray discs. When doing so, video will be black or perhaps a still slide.

The difference is that Profile 3.0 players won't do video -- not a change in the disc format.

I am still hoping that Denon include ILink too, would be nice not to have to take any steps back from the 5910. Since HDDVD was dropped I now have two machines that need a 5.1 analogue input but my amp only has one so if anything ILink is even more important than it was before (I suspect most ILink users only have only one multi channel analogue input).

It will be entirely built inhouse (yay) and is based on the same standard as their previous High-End Universal player the DVD-5910. It will also featured balanced 2 Channel outputs for CD playback for those that can take advantage of this.

Also it will feature-

- A successor to DL3 that will handle all digital clock management and jitter control for audio instead of HDMI
- New 32 bit digital upsampling and D/A conversion circuits

Pricing mentioned was going to be $3400 when they were going to included HD-DVD playback but since HD-DVD demise and Toshiba not making the optical lasers anymore HD-DVD has been dropped.

So I still invision $3000k for it and will gladly buy one to replace my current 2 Player solution.

http://www.avrant.com/?p=311

Heres hoping that Denon-

- Redesign their GUI finally on the player to match those on their new AVR/AVP's, and more importantly since this is going to be a no holds player

- Match or better the Blu-Ray load times of the PS3. Since this won't be out until early 09 hopefully technology will catch up to make this possible or else Denon can just drop a Cell processor in to make this happen at the price point it is coming out at

Any more news on this unit? Does Profile 3.0 Blu Ray standard which is audio only even apply to this unit coming? Also if anyone knows- what sampling frequency will it support? 384 khz? 192 khz? Any ideas if one could put a 32 bit sound file on a Blu Ray disc and have this unit play it?

And a question I'd like to know when it comes out- do you think this new unit will compare favorably with the McIntosh MCD 301 player in terms of sound? I know you can't answer that now, but Im posing this question for later. I ask because this is the only player I know that uses 32 bit D/A converters and would wonder how the sound will be using such converters. Does Blu Ray even support any digital sound files bigger then 24 bit? I wonder how the 3.0 spec will be on that one.

I just can't wait for this unit, but Denon will have to short times a little, because Pioneer competition with his upcoming flagship player is soooo tempting.

On Paper I donr think the Pioneer is much competition:
Realta vs Qdeo
SACD Vs No SACD
DVD-A Vs No DVD-A
Dual Diff PC1792 Vs Dual Diff WM8740 (Probably very similar quality)
Balanced Stereo Vs Unbalanced Stereo
HDCD Vs No HDCD

Competition or not- it looks like Denon will be the one I end up getting for this type of player. I've always liked their digital player units from the DCD 1520 all the way up to the DVD 3930.
