Rataouille wasn't a rental. I just bought it yesterday from Target. That was the only glitch I had, and I was able to repeat it. I checked the disc, but couldn't see anything wrong. I'll check again tomorrow.

I can verify this on a new disc rented from Blockbuster Online. An American Carol does NOT play on my Sylvania NB501SL9 just purchased over Christmas with the latest firmware. I have also heard reports of other Funai users not able to play this disc (Magnavox NB500MG9). Customer Support says Sony has released a new firmware, but support was not able to provide a date as to when Funai would be providing the update to customers.

Cleaned up the Ratatouille disc, but still nothing (same glitch) today. Gonna try to exchange for another copy.

Update (01-05-09): I returned the disc to Target, but they had no more copies. I got my money back, and ordered through Amazon. Wiil update once the Amazon copy comes in.

I find it hard to believe that a newly purchased disc from Target would be defective, and I'm guessing a disc from Amazon would be no different. I'm thinkin it's the player.

I didn't even bother trying another copy of the disc that won't play on mine; it was brand new too, and someone else reported the same issues.

But in the case of Ratatouille there have no posts indicating problems with this disc on the funai players. I've read through the Ratatouille thread. The glitch is not a big one - a half second pause at the 58 second mark. I can live with that if my new copy does the same. The PQ and AQ are top notch, as well as the story.

Do the columns line up for you?

For me, they line up with:

OS X - Safari 3.2
OS X - Firefox 3.0
Win XP - IE 6.0

However, they don't line up for me in Win XP - Firefox 3.0.

Got my Ratatouille replacement today. New disc plays fine; no glitches during playback. Looks like the first disc was defective.

This is an audio Blu-ray disc.

Title: TrondheimSolistene DIVERTIMENTI by 2L.NO
Player model: Mag. NB500MG9
Firmware version: ? Factory original from May 2008
Plays: N 5.1 LPCM 24 BIT/192 kHz does not play
Plays: Y 5.1 dts-HD Master Audio 24 BIT/192 kHz does play
Plays: Y 5.1 DOLBY TRUEHD 24 BIT/192 kHz does play
Plays: Y 5.1 DOLBY Digital 48 kHz does play
Plays: Y 2.0 LPCM 24 BIT/192 kHz does play

No audio on 5.1 LPCM 24 BIT/192 kHz track and no indication on the Mag display that it knows what the track is.
No reply from Funai support on two separate requests other than thank you for your request.
Funai phone support answer was "We don't know."
This track plays fine on some, but not all, other Blu-ray players.
Other tracks on the disc, dts-HD Master Audio, DOLBY TRUEHD, DOLBY Digital, and 2.0 LPCM 24 BIT/192 kHz play fine on the Mag.

I'm glad you started this thread!

These are all for the Insignia NS-BRDVD (firmware version unknown):

Title: King of California
Plays: N -- 75% of the time the disc won't even load, and when it does, the movie hangs at 13:19 and jumps back to the Menu. Six attempts at getting past the 13:19 mark were all failures.

Title: Hellboy II
Plays: Y

Title: Poltergeist
Plays: Y

Title: House of Flying Daggers
Plays: Y* -- IF you can get it to load, the movie plays fine until about 1 hour & 15 minutes in (bamboo forest scene). At that point, the disc freezes up and repeated reboots make no difference. While the movie will start to play if you skip to the next scene, it repeatedly freezes up for about 4 to 6 seconds at a time -- pretty much making it unwatchable.

Title: The Golden Compass
Plays: Y* -- Plays fine until the last 20 minutes or so, and then random freeze-ups occur.

Title: 28 Days Later
Plays: Y

Title: 28 Weeks Later
Plays: Y

Title: Daryl Hall & John Oates: Live at the Troubadour
Plays: Y

Title: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Plays: Y

Title: Tenacious D: The Complete Masterworks 2
Plays: Y

Title: The Incredible Hulk
Plays: Y* -- Intermittent freeze-ups around the 20-minute mark. I had to skip an entire scene or two to get the disc to play the remainder of the movie.

Title: Master and Commander
Plays: Y

Title: Tinker Bell
Plays: Y

Title: Kit Kittredge: An American Girl
Plays: Y

Title: Sex and the City: The Movie
Plays: Y

Title: Big Fish
Plays: Y

hoping someone who owns the mag can confirm...I want to add first I do not have a HDMI compatible reciever so I do not recieve any of the hd codecs but have had no problems recieving the core tracks until now.

I popped in King Kong which played just fine however my reciever never did switch over to DTS and I could not switch it manually so the reciever didnt recognize a DTS track it did play an Awsome DD track though. Can anyone confirm this or do I possible have a bad disk?

That's an awful lot that don't work. Are these rentals?

Can anyone else confirm this?

Yes, all of those were rentals. (Should that be noted when adding new titles to this thread?)

However, all of those discs were completely free of any surface defects (scratches, smudges, dirt, etc., etc.), and none of them had any type of label affixed to them. They were just plain retail discs -- seemingly brand new. *shrugs*

Firmware version 1.106 updates for Sylvania NB501SL9 & NB500SL9

Perhaps this will correct the issue with An American Carol.

----

To find your current firmware version:

Turn on the Power to your device.

Press the Setup button on your remote to open the Setup Menu.

Look in the Top Right Corner for the firmware Version.

NOTE: If no firmware version is found, the firmware version is old and the device needs to be updated.

Someone at the Blu-ray.com forum reported he had problems playing Bourne Identity from the trilogy set. Anybody else have a problem with this set? I want to buy these when they eventually come down in price a little more, but am hesitant if my Mag. will not be able play them.
