Sylvania NB500SL9 - Original Factory Firmware(there is no number)

The following all played fine:

Vantage Point
The Final Days of Planet Earth
In The Valley of Elah
10,000 B.C.
Gods And Generals
I, Robot
Encounters at the End of The World
When We Left Earth
Planet Earth

Since recently updating the firmware in this player to v 1.106, I have played the following BD disc with no problem:

Doomsday

Note that I use only a simple stereo set up and use component I/O. Thus I can not address any issues with other sound tracks. Nor do I often check "extras" on the discs. So far, other than the subtitle issue on the non-BD "Rome" TV series discs, I have encountered no disc incompatibilities with this player. The Rome discs played fine on my non-BD player but the subtitles were a problem on the Sylvania.

For the record, I got a new copy of Zack & Mira, it played fine. So there is no issue for this title.

This disc from the trilogy set played perfectly fine for me on my Syl. NB501SL9, v. 1.106. Rented from Blockbuster online. I will report back on the other two once I view them.

  • Amusement
  • Devil Wears Prada, The

Post firmware upgrade to v. 1.106.
  • Awake*
  • Bourne Identity, The
  • Max Payne*
  • Pink Panther, The

*These movies froze once at a point during the movie. I'm going to attribute it to visible imperfections on the disc due to Blockbuster Online origin. I was able to clean Max Payne and it no longer froze at that point.

Title: Zack and Miri make a Porno
Plays: No. After multiple attempts, I could never get the disc to get past the initial load. The deck would say "LOAD" for about a minute, flash "BD" for a couple seconds, and then do nothing but say "STOP" with the firmware's wallpaper on the screen. This was from a Netflix rental, but the disc looked to be in excellent condition.

Had disc exchanged and new one does the exact thing.

No, luck finding any firmware.
Anyone try using the Sylvania firmware on Insignia (or any other Funai)?

Did anyone have any problems with their copy of Twilight? I found two possible errors one at 20.47 and I cant remeber the other but it just froze for a few seconds then started right back up with no problems, should I be worried about this?

I had a small glitch at about the 47 minute mark. Just how 00mike00 described. Other than that no other problems at all with Twilight.

FYI: I, too, have a Magnavox NB500MG9.

Is anyone having problems playing the new The Day the Earth Stood Still on Blu-ray. The BD package includes both the old (1950's) and new (2009) version. There has been a report that the new 2009 movie has problems playing on the 2nd generation Magnavox player (still made my Funai). I especially want to hear from owners with the 1st generation, Magnaox (NB500MG9) , Sylvania (NB500SL9) or Insignia (NS-BRDVD) BD players, but owners with the new 2nd generation Magnavox or the Sylvania with the firmware update should also post. Please make it clear what BD player (and firmware version is not the original) you have.

Thanks-

Ron Jones

Sorry I haven't updated this in a while. I shall do so soon.

In the meantime, I am disappointed to report that the special features on the UK version of JCVD don't work on my North American Insignia NS-BRDVD.

Then again, they don't work on my North American Sony BDP-S350 either.

The extras are PAL.

Is there any way to get PAL out of this player? I have another display device that will do PAL if given a PAL source.
