^ No app. And yes the newer remotes will work for the buttons they have in common.

Thanks!

Is the internet downloadable firmware still available?

I will be setting up a 203 in my media room and moving my 103 to my bedroom and then moving the 83 to my library for mainly CD listening but I will be using a Marantz 8801 with it will need an HDMI connection.

Thanks

Remote: yes.

IOS: no, the player is too old.

Thanks to both of you for your advice over the years!

The 83 was a very big deal for me when I got it. Technology has truly moved on.

I do not remember when I last updated it but I will use it primarily for CDs .

I do not know when I last updated it. It must have been many years ago.

The remotes should work but some of the keys won't have a function for the 83 models. I don't believe there is an iOS or Android apps for the the 83.

Be aware that the BDP-83 may not play nice with the newer HDMI-2.0 AVR. If you have an issue with not getting any audio, consult with Oppo support and they may be able to assist. If the AVR is not connected to a 4K display you may be alright.

Thanks. I will not be using a 4K tv. But this is useful information.

Check to see if the AVR has a specific HDMI mode that limits output to HDMI-1.4 specs. That should ensure that it plays nice with the 83.

My oppo 203 went to my friends place for couple of days. I connected my old oppo bdp-83 to Denon 6400 receiver. I am getting video properly. But no audio. On denon receiver it is displaying as stereo. Oppo BDP-83 is on latest firmware. Please advise.

Email OPPO Tech Support, you probably need a firmware update to let your 83 work with the updated HDMI in your Denon.

You can use the Email Us link on OPPO's Support page for the player.

My BDP-83 now hangs on startup - I get 'Hello', then a few sec the HDMI logo on the front panel, and that's it. Picture-wise I do get the startup screen through HDMI. This just started, has been working fine for years (don't watch it a ton, so usage is maybe once a month).

It responds to remote (or physical on-unit) on/off, but won't eject, go into menus, etc., either from remote or front panel.

I didn't find anything searching (and my apologies for not reading all 41,000 posts).

Any suggestions? Is this the behavior experienced for the issue mentioned in https://www.oppodigital.com/Knowledg...&ProdID=BDP-95 that requires sending it in for repair? Or is there a workaround to get it open (once) and then keep a disk in the tray?

If it needs service, what's the current cost? Maybe time to just update to a 203 (though I don't yet have a 4K proje

Thanks!

Email OPPO Tech Support and they can help you diagnose this and go over your options. You can use the Email Us link on OPPO's Support page for the player:

https://www.oppodigital.com/support/...3-Support.aspx

While waiting for a response from OPPO try this:

Turn the unit off and disconnect from wall power. Remove ALL connections from the player -- EVERYTHING, so you just have the bare player.

While still unplugged, press and hold power button on the Front Panel for a few seconds to discharge any residual power.

Plug back in to JUST wall power -- leave everything else disconnected. Then see if you can power up and eject the tray or get other response from the Front Panel buttons. If you CAN, then power down, reconnect video output and check again.

If you can't, the player is likely going to need service.

Condensing the verbiage from Bob:
The 83 likes to hang in the boot process if something connected is not playing nice. For example it will hang if there's a networking issue. Remove any USB, Ethernet or other connections and try again.

Thanks both rdgrimes and Bob!

I didn't get around to debugging this until today. Powered up the 83 and... the problem is gone, the 83 is now working fine. So whatever the problem was has resolved itself. Happy it's working but wish I knew why :-)

No idea - same set of connected devices, same network, etc., but now I have some troubleshooting steps in case it happens again.

Just an FYI, Emotiva XMC-1 owners recently got an upgrade to this processor in the form of a new 4K/HDMI 2.0b/HDCP 2.2 video board and Oppo's non-4K players(in our case the BDP-83 & 93) were passing video but NOT passing audio through HDMI. After a few of our Emotiva Lounge members sent e-mails to Oppo, they responded with this:

"If you recently upgraded your receiver to one that supports HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2, then you will need to upgrade your player's firmware. This firmware can be downloaded off of our website (http://download.oppodigital.com/BDP8...0-1011_2.0.zip) and then extracted to a FAT formatted USB drive.

You're probably right, I'm just glad it's there now.

I'm using my 83 in my bedroom system, I've got a 1.4 AVR now, works great, but probably will update it to 2.0 / 2.2 soon and I'm stoked that this is in place when I make that move.

Great support for a ten year old bluray player.

Oppo support is second to none. The stopping of production for new players is definitely a reason for dismay. Because of the support I've received for by BPD-83 I had no hesitation when buying the UDP-203. Didn't even consider any other manufacturer.

They don't want to post it because its possible it could break something for folks who don't need it. If it ain't broke.....

Still rocking the Oppo 83SE for 8 something years now, though many times the blu rays don't load perfectly---get that dreaded wild motor noise searching for it's place once the disc is in the player.

Most of the time it eventually finds it's place, though sometimes I have to eject and try again---and it seems to always load in the end.

To be fair, it's pretty much done that here and there from day one. But reading of loader issues here has worried me a bit. Though not sure if those are exactly related to my sometimes-issues.

In the eventual possibility that my 83SE takes a dive, what could take it's place? Note that I specifically got the 'SE' at the time for the stereo analog out performance (CD's), so whatever blu ray player replaces the SE should be on that level or higher.

At least in the near term, Oppo still has parts for repairing the 83.
That said, the 95 and even 105 are extremely good values in the used market, compared to anything else with similar performance.
Also good to note that the 103 and 203 also have excellent analog performance, rivaling what the 83SE has. They just lack the dedicated stereo out.

OK, I don't know if this is 'technical" or not, but here goes:
There is a blu ray "region B" Space 1999 set that is reasonably-priced on Ebay.
If I used AnyDVD to remove the region code from the discs and then burned them to blu ray, would the BDP-83 be able to play the SD PAL content? (I assume it would play the HD content just fine.) As I understand it, the BDP-83 can handle PAL content...but could this be viewed on a typical 55" US display fed via HDMI?

If your TV does not support playing 25/50Hz content, just set the player to NTSC output and it'll be converted. There's even a button for that on the remote. NTSC is the default setting for that option. Consult the manual.

To follow up, I purchased the Space: 1999 set (10 discs total, seasons 1 and 2) on blu-ray. The box shows a symbol which would indicate Region B. When I got the set, I thought, why not just pop the thing into the BDP-83 and see what happens? Can't hurt, right? So I put the disc in, and voila, plays like a champ! I tried another disc in my Panasonic DMP-BDT 215 - and it plays it too! So apparently this set isn't really region-locked. Which is great, because the picture quality is quite good and it's a fun nostalgia trip going back and seeing this series again.

BTW, on all the discs I've looked at, the shows are 1080p and the extras are only a series of still pictures. So if there is PAL content I'm not seeing it. Really happy that it turned out this way!

I have year 1 and 2 BD sets. Year 2 is a B set so they won't play on my 203 and 103. Never tried on my 83 yet. I bought a hacked Sony BD player for year 2.

Thanks for pointing this out! You're correct - although this is a single set consisting of Year 1 and Year 2, the Year 2 BDs (6 thru 10) ARE in fact region locked to B.

So I'm giving AnyDVD HD a workout with Disc 6 this morning...this should remove the region coding (did check to be sure region coding removal is enabled) and will report results. At least I will only have 5 discs to fool with...and I can watch Year 1 while I get Year 2 properly "sanitized."
