It has been over 1 year.

The BD “Point Blank” will not play in my BD80 but took it back to BBY & it plays fine in their Sony BDP S185! Will not load! No scratches. Just says reading & after a minute it stops. No TV screen error message. Have SD card inserted in player & disabled Internet access in menu which is not used anyway since no connection.

Bought this BD80 in 2009 & played hundreds of BDs w/o issue. Last 3 months had 4 issues, 3 were fixed by replacing the disc. (I posted “Is problem BD player, disc or both?”)

Are there going to be any more firmware updates for my player? Or will new copy protection on new BDs cause me trouble?

Seems like this is a firmware issue.

Sounds like the mechanical drive is going out. The mechanical drives in computers are the same and we see those going out all the time, even Blu-Ray, even new ones.

I don't have that Point Blank disc. I suppose for $6 I could order one and test it for you on my BD-60, but I'm not sure that would prove anything 100% anyway. Looks like I can also rent from BlockBuster. If an older disc like that doesn't play, it's not likely a "new protection" problem that a firmware update would fix.

See my post above about cleaning. Luckily, BD players are under $150 these days so they have pretty much turned into "expendable crew-members". It seems everything these days is built to barely work ... not to last a long time. They know tech advances and machines will get obsolete that way eventually anyway. So, build cheap, sell more that way, sell another in 3-5 years with newer features. I don't agree, but that is the "disposable economy" world we live in.

Thank you for the reply, Tesla1856 (great user name BTW)

The film is not “old.”

Point Blank

If my mechanical drive is going out, why can I play every other BD? I have played several since this issue arose.

My 1st thought was a factory defect in the disc. I still haven’t ruled that out entirely. Just as some players can deal with scratches better than other players, some may be able to play despite an error in the disc, I will receive my replacement copy soon & will post the results. SInce it is not a popular BD & I ordered the replacement from BBY w/in a week of the last copy, if there was a defective batch, I may have the same problem vs. getting a copy from another store.

I searched for spindle cleaning & found this:

https://www.avsforum.com/t/1055071/panasonic-2006-and-newer-dvd-drive-hub-spindle-cleaning-and-reassembly-complications

I believe I did hear a grinding noise when the player was attempting to load/read the disc. But, why do all my other discs play just fine?

By old he meant movie came out before the last firmware update. Updates needed come out before a release that will have problems or very soon after the movie is released. An update since Dec 2011 would handle that movie if needed. /Dan

OK, I understand, ideally If the manufacturer is on top of everything than the timing between a new copy protection on a new release is quickly followed by a FW fix. When Iron Man 3 comes out on BD if there are issues with copy protection or anything affecting playability, customers will scream from street date in large numbers & all player manufacturers will issue FW updates.

Point Blank was not a big box office film & certainly not a big seller on BD, I’m sure Panasonic never heard of it till my email which they have so far ignored. A few months between release of the BD & the last FW update is not that long if they did not know of an issue.

I still have not heard of a reasonable explanation for why all other BDs play just fine & only this one will not load? Dirty spindle, bad laser, bad mechanical drive explanations don’t seem correct as that should cause problems with ANY disc.

I hope to have the replacement BD today or Monday & will report whether it plays or not.

If it also doesn’t play I may buy an Oppo BDP 103. $$$$ but, rave reviews especially for customer service & 2 yrs vs 1 yr warranty. Plus an extra year when I use VISA to purchase. I realize that would not have helped if I have problems at 4 years as I may have now, but it shows manufacturer confidence in the Oppo build quality.

If my BD-60 ever stops working, I'm going to get a Sony BDP-590 ... (or whatever Sony mid-range unit has replaced it by then).

Cheap, Supports Netflix and Amazon, Supports AC3/DTS from Steaming, Sony has ties to Hollywood Studios (protections and updates).

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-BDP-S590-Blu-ray-Player-Wi-Fi/dp/B006U1YUZE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367701212&sr=8-1&keywords=sony+bdp+590

Edit: Looks like Sony BDP-S5100 is this years model with even more features for less money.

But to be clear ... I bought my BD-60 for less the $100 3 years ago. It still plays Blu-Ray disks perfectly for me. I concider it a good buy.

Tesla1856,

I bet your BD60 will fail to play “Point Blank” (an excellent film, BTW)

I rec’d replacement from BBY. Same UPC. Still will not play!
BD player display says reading & disc icon flashes & then stop & TV screen error message: “Cannot read please ck disc”

Re Sony BD players, I will continue to try to avoid Sony. Sony used to be my 1st choice brand, had 3 or more expensive products. Then I had customer service incompetence, lies on 2 different products. DVD player where they denied there was an issue (“We never heard of that”) & I later discovered many people posting online about a design flaw causing my exact problem. Very expensive camcorder (2002) with editing software that failed to load & a zoom problem where I sent it in & they “repaired” only to have the problem remain unfixed! I found a software fix online --(it WAS a Sony issue) & I just left the zoom issue unfixed.

My lower price range product I would replace the Panasonic is Samsung which I also have on TV #2. Odd, but I have the Panasonic on a Samsung TV and the newer Samsung on an older Sharp TV. Had to do with the order bought and that the Samsung is wireless and in the same toom as router while cables go to my main TV position. /Dan

I've had issues payling the following discs:

Disney African Cats BD Sometimes works
Beautiful Creatures BD The player does not even recognize the disc.

Both of these discs are from blockbuster. One from the mail (Disney), the other one from the store.

I haven't had a chance to see if the Beautiful Creatures would work on another player, but wondering if anyone else if having problems I've cleaned the discs, check to make sure the firmware is up to date, etc. If anyone has any other ideas, it would be appreciated.

I completed the cleaning and reformatted the SD Card. It seems to work fine now, but I'll have to wait and see if it is a temporary fix and the laser is going out.

Well, I think it finally bit the dust. Last night, it wouldn't recognize Blu-ray, or DVD. So, I had to go back to Blockbuster to exchange my GIjoe BR, and get the regular DVD. Does anyone know of a player(s) that would be a good replacement for this player ~ $100. I will clean it again and see if that fixes the issue, but I'm not too confident that it will fix it.

I replaced my Panny BD60 with a Sony BDP-S480. Ethernet and DLNA supported, and it hasn't rejected any BD I've thrown at it. The only issue I've had is that it doesn't always properly power off. (requiring a held power button on panel to shut down)

After my problems with the BD60 and the BD75; I don't think I'll buy Panny for optical disk players again.

Sorry if this is in the wrong area, but I have a problem with my blu-ray players disc tray not opening. I dont hear any sounds coming from it when I hit the eject/open button. I bought this from a yard sale, all it does is say "Hello" and "Please Wait"

Any tips or help would be appreciated. smile.gif

Still using my BD-60 on a daily basis. Watching BDs and the rest streaming Amazon Video and Pandora. Works great never had an issue with it. I consider it an excellent buy.

Never tried the BD-live feature ...not even sure what that does or if it's worth the hassle.

Is it still playing DVDs? If so then it may be your Blu Ray laser is faulty.

Firmware update sucessful to 2.64

Bd still plays DVDs and older brs just fine

Won't play any recent releases.

Did play a recent release immediately after update
But then disc stopped playing 2/3 through

Sounds like a blu laser or spindle issue, but I
got too many other things to do to disassemble a 3 year old player

Time to get another throwaway br
Don't need 3d, nor do I stream, it's a blu ray for gods sake,

Just need a simple br with wifi to hold me over until
4ks become essential

Suggestions?

I would pick up a Sony S3100 for around a bill ($100) and then wait for the 4K stuff to develop. It should serve your needs for a while.

Sounds right about what I paid for mine when I purchased it back in Austin!

Till this day it plays like a new player!! No issues and I did update to the latest firmware a while back.

I know, I bought my BD-60 when it was still an "affordable" model at about $350. I have yet to buy or rent a disc that it won't play. I didn't have it connected to the web until about 6 months ago, which is when I did my first firmware upgrade. Never had an issue.

I'm waiting for the thing to die so I can upgrade, but IT WON'T DIE!!!

I love my iPhone, but it will never replace my turntable. I've never seen Titanic OR XXXXXXXXX. Alexa is a stripper name.

Hi My son in law gave me his Panasonic Blu-Ray Disc Player DMP BD 60, and the original remote controller, I put new batteries in it, and set it to work my TV , which it will do, but it will not work the Blu-Ray it won't switch it on or off all I det when I press any button is SET3 the machine works fine with the "drop down front buttons" so I know it's not the player, He thinks he remembers re-setting the remote or his other remote not to clash with each other, how do I get it back to original state ?

On the remote press and hold 3 and OK at the same time for at least 5 seconds.

I've since moved mine to my bedroom since I replaced it with a higher-end Denon unit. It still goes strong and plays everything without fault. I'll give Panasonic credit; they make a quality product.
