Bluraychip's version: http://bluraychip.dk/product.php?id_product=26

jvbdigital's version: http://www.jvbdigital.nl/jvb.asp?lev...tle&title=1234

ebay: https://ebay.us/Om1BUi (this requires no opening up of the player chassis)

Does anyone have any recommendations or thoughts on the above options or if there are any other better options? The eBay option doesn't require me to open up the player chassis but is the priciest option - how hard is it to open up the oppo?

Are there software options to making the player region free?

My Oppo is installed with the latest firmware update.

Thanks for your comments!
You could get the last one a lot cheaper through avsdigital (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Oppo-BDP-10...t/162101335749), ships to US "and many other countries"... (My two from them work great.)

I've not done it, but supposedly opening up the Oppo is easy as pie. If you want region free for dvds only, there is a software option (http://www.multi-region.net/oppo_bdp-83), but the only option for blu-rays is a hardware kit (at least as far as I know and as far as what can be discussed here).

Thanks fmalczewski, for your suggestion of avsdigital's product, can that be installed externally without opening the 103?

^ You will need a hardware mod (such as the ones you've spotted) for Blu-ray Region Free.

If all you need is Region Free for standard DVDs you can do that for free with the Super Disc software mod. See the FAQ for the 103 (link at the top of the first post of this thread).

Ebay: Oppo BDP-103 Region Code Upgrade USB Kit

This external mod works on my 103, 103D, and 203.

Yup, what Paul H said, can be installed externally (or internally, which I've never bothered with), 103, 103D, 105, 203, 205, works with all of them externally... which is what I've done starting with the 103.

(The 205 and perhaps the 105 might be a problem if somebody wanted to install it internally, more than just opening it up and easily installing it, might have to remove a board or something to get at where it needs to be installed, but those are beyond my pay grade, just something I remember reading about the 205 once upon a time.)

^ OPPO has published the details of its RS232 serial port commands, but not its IP commands.

I suggest you get in touch with OPPO Tech Support and see if they can get those details to you. I don't know if they've ever been written up for other than OPPO's own, internal use.

You can use the Email Us link on OPPO's Support page for the player:

Cool Oppo bdp103d compatible with epson 5040ub?

Hi, sorry to drop in on the conversation like this, i just have a quick question, somewhat related (i hope) to the discussion. I have an oppo bdp103d and interested in upgrading to the epson 5040ub mfr refurb. Will the projector display properly in the oppo, or do i need an oppo firmware upgrade in order to do so? I have the monoprice dynamicview 4k hdmi cable. Thanks in advance!

what do you mean by "display correctly"? The 5040 is a 4k pixel shifter. Are you asking if the projector will display 4k from the Oppo 103?

The Oppo 103 will only upscale 1080p content to 4k, and then feed the 4k signal to the projector. The 5040 will have no problem playing that. But the Oppo 103 wont play a 4k disc.

You'll have to experiment for yourself if you prefer the Oppo or the Epson to do the upscaling.

If you're asking if an epson 5040 will play content from an Oppo 103, the answer is yes.
