While these players may produce high-quality audio and video, it's not like you can connect other HDMI devices to them and take advantage of the circuitry of these players with every device you have. What Pioneer should do is replace the BDP-52FD, BDP-53FD, BDP-62FD, BDP-440, BDP-450, and BDP-LX55 with a stepup from the BDP-80FD and BDP-170, and a step down from the BDP-85FD. Boy am I glad I found a BDP-52FD to pair up with my new SC-81. Now if only Pioneer could resolve the hi-res bitstreaming but with MediaTek Blu-ray players hopefully via firmware updates for the players and receivers.
There're other people who have other kind of audio gears, so its not a total waste of resources. But even with a much lower MSRP(compare to the Japanese model), in this price range people are still going to buy Oppo BDP-105D instead.

would the BDP-80FD be a good match for my SC1222K receiver? I currently have a Panasonic DMP-BDT310. It has been acting a bit strange lately and I think it will probably die soon. I have not looked at Blu-Ray players since buying that one. If the 80fd is not a good choice then what would be one that you would recommend? I use it for Blu Ray/DVD watching and use my current one for some DLNA stuff as well as Amazon Prime.

not necessarily. the 62fd is/was very popular but its been out a long time. they have 2 new high end models coming out next month. they look promising. the SRP is ridiculous but dealers will sell much cheaper than list.

us they are 85 and 88 models I believe.

They look out of my price range. That is why i thought the 80fd would work. I have been unable to find any detailed reviews on it though.

what are your needs? the 80fd is missing; Qdeo, pqls, dual hdmi, etc. I personally think it's silly it carries the "elite" moniker at all.

it's an okay unit for you I guess. your receiver does support pqls to sync the clocks of a pqls player and your receiver - a nice touch, but certainly not a deal breaker. the only inexpensive solution to match your unit in that regard would be a used 62fd.

if all you need it for is Blu-ray, go for it. if you want a player that can make your dvd collection look nice, I would recommend the Marantz ud5007. you can find one around 350.00 from a dealer or 300.00 used. all my subjective opinion.

It would have been nice for 2014 if Pioneer released something a level between the BDP-80FD/170 and BDP-85FD/LX58. The shame of it is that from what I remember, after the day or two I spent with the BDP-80FD, it loaded discs faster than the BDP-52FD, and the 1.5x scanning with audio would have been a nice feature! Yet considering the fact that I have the Elite SC-81 receiver, I didn't see the point in paying another $1K just for the PQLS capability. So I went with a used BDP-52FD so I could get the PQLS feature when bitstreaming everything from lossy highly-compressed material to lossless uncompressed PCM and DSD, as well as 480i for SD DVD playback, so I could cut down on HDMI bandwidth, resulting in faster response and less delay between performing player operations and OSDs appearing. I must say, the BDP-52FD loads quicker than the BDP-05FD/09FD/23FD/51FD/320. So I shouldn't complain too much.

Since the 85 and 88 are supposed to be their answer to Oppo I bet you find retails similar to 103/105 at dealers.

Been looking at BD players. I don't need a lot of apps, want SACD and would connect to a Pioneer 1124. Looked at the 80. But at 299 I'm not buying. Too expensive for what it provides. 199? Maybe. But certainly not at 299.

Well eat my own words. Went to Best Buy and the one I went to had the only BDP-80 in town AND it was on sale for 199. Just setting it up. Want to watch football games first. Quick check and SACD sounds great. Did the basic setup. WHO did these menus? Really Pioneer?

Hope they have some serious attention being paid to the next firmware.....

Is the guy from Pioneer still hanging out here?

If so I hope you can pass along some stuff to Pioneer about the current, apparently original, FW for the 80FD.

1. When you turn off BDLive you do not need an alert at the beginning of a BD that has BD Live on it telling you that BDLive is turned off. It is already "Prohibited" because you want it OFF. You don't need another alert.

2. When and if you want BDLive there needs to be some indication on the screen when it is downloading BDLive information so you don't think the player is locked up.

3. I formatted the USB Stick in the back USB port using the players "Format" option. However it did not fully or cleanly format the USB drive. Left the stuff that was on it, on it. That is not "Format".

4. Miracast passwords. Really? I need a bazillion character long password to connect my devices to the player? The Miracast process needs to be simplified. The other Miracast applications I've messed with use FOUR digits.

5. BDLive when enabled takes what seems like much longer to d/l the information as compared to my Sony BDP-S790. Long time....

BD picture looked great. SACD sounds great. But so do both on other players. Pioneer needs to spend some time with this firmware to separate this player from the pack.

If I had to decide right now I'd be taking it back. We'll see how it goes over the next few days.

6. PQLS. I'm using the Pioneer 1124. I'd like to take advantage of PQLS. But I do not want to enable all the hdmi control stuff. I like many others find the HDMI control stuff annoying and it causes problems. Why must I endure HDMI control to take advantage of PQLS?

It is playing MKV's from my media server NAS and is doing so with the HD Audio codec. So that's a plus. Does subtitle shifting too which one guy asks about in almost every thread.
superaaaaa likes this.

pqls is passed through hdmi. they could probably set it up over a separate cable like denon hd link, but people complain about that as well.

urga - have you tried any old standard def dvd's? that's one of my favorite ways to test a player.

Watching one now. Looks fine. I had a Sony S790 that got moved to another home theater system. The 80FD looks as good. The deal breaker for me will be the interface. This FW is the first FW. I don't expect it to be fully mature. But this is pretty bad.

I've played with the video settings, "Normal, Vibrant, etc." and Cinema looks good.

Would be nice to hear from Pioneer rep that a FW is forthcoming.

I might go back to a Sony product. Was looking at Samsung but no SACD.

"pqls is passed through hdmi."

Yes but does Control stuff have to be enabled too? HDMI control is a PIA.

I've played with the video settings, "Normal, Vibrant, etc." and Cinema looks good.

Would be nice to hear from Pioneer rep that a FW is forthcoming.

honestly I don't expect anything spectacular from the 80fd. I'm curious as to how the 85fd and 88fd handle standard dvd. picture quality can be pretty subjective. I read all the praise for the sony 6200, bought it (under the impression it was a poor man's Oppo) and the picture quality to me was terrible.

i'm confused as to your big issue with pqls. I was under the impression the 80fd didn't even support it. Am I missing something?
