I agree that these players are tough sells given the performance and pricing of an Oppo which has much better audio functionality and the forthcoming 4K players. Seems to me that Pioneer is caught between a rock and a hard place here.

isn't HDCD decoding default for BD/DVD player?

the HD part is only used for a very small part of the CD anyway. I should stop reading how things work.

With Onkyo buying Pioneer and Mark by mistake calling the the Pioneer a Panasonic flagship we have the potential for a classic who's on first. What and I don't give a damn. 4k Blu ray is still a year off for the players and the first players will be expensive. Personally, I think if you have to economize somewhere in your system, a $100 or so Samsung or Panasonic player will do one fine video wise (my Darbee is in my Lumagen)(get the bit about needing to economize when your projector MSRPs at $28K and the Lumagen at $4K? But that is exactly what I do. And all the audiophiles and videophiles who visit me ask me what Oppo I am using to produce that great sound. I tell them I am using a $119 Samsung (the reason I bought it was to get 3D which my old built like a brick Pioneer Elite whatever would not do) but I changed everything in the Panasonic, the PS, caps, dacs etc. They ask if they can see the modified board and I say no, I poured potting compound over the whole board. I don't want anyone to steal my mods. I got an unsolicited email from an African bank official who wants to invest millions in my design. He says I will get the money very shortly but he doesn't have the scratch yet to pay the wire transfer fee. I said I can wait until he raises it because I need more time to make the mod even better. Modifiers are never done, there is always something better up their sleeves. Of course I told him as soon as I get the money, I will send him the machine and hopefully he will be blown away.

Makes no sense to price one higher than the Oppo 105. Is the 88FD really better for PQ and AQ than the 105?

Of course no one could answer that question. but my bet the guys at Pioneer, who are probably nervous about their jobs in light of the purchase of Pioneer by Onkyo, would say yes if we asked them.

Of course one of us could buy one and do an A/B comparison, but the results if in Pioneer's favor would be shouted down as being subjected without true double blind evaluation. A result in favor of Oppo would be wildly accepted because that is what the majority own. Me? I am happy with my Panasonic. If I were an audio fanatic, I probably wouldn't be.

Imagic. Please don't answer this question for obvious political reasons, but would you buy one of these things if you weren't abandoning sourcing from optical discs in favor of streaming?

Oppo is not over priced considering the price of the ingredients they put in the sauce. But for many the potential perceived benefit will not be worth the cost or will be beyond their budget for the higher priced Oppos.

Might want to rethink that. 4K on the way on Blu Ray.
I would probably stream, I really don't care that much about video, audio is where it is at for me. Cannot beat Blu Ray audio in my book. I can only imagine how great 4K Atmos Blues are going to be.

Too bad about the 103. I have an 83 and a 95 and have never had those issues. The 95 is a superb BD player.

An Oppo will play just about anything you throw at it. And , do one hell of a decent job of it. I have yet to see a better machine, coupled with superior CS, and a reputation so good, advertising is not needed. (was not needed) They sold them selves.
I must agree though with the advent of 4k coming in 2015- it just makes no sense to piss away that much cash in a player now. (unless you are very wealthy) and even then, an Oppo 105 would be the choice of decks. Pioneer is a bit off on timing-this ought to have been out last year. If you have issues with an Oppo as stated, then there is a failure to contact one hell of a fine CS department, to have them sort out any issues, that I've yet to see continue on with Oppo. It's on you if you experience these issues.

For me, no to 4KBD and No to these players!

Unless 4KBD is recorded on 100GB discs, it'll be a lower bitrate per pixel, possibly decreasing picture quality regardless of resolution. You'd be better off upscaling existing BDs to 4K. Not much has been said about audio specs for 4KBDs. Also, titles up to the present won't be remastered in true 4K--4KBD will only apply to future films.

As far as these players are concerned, if you own a receiver with an ESS Sabre ES9006 or ES9018 DAC, these players would be a waste, especially for stereo analog output only! What Pioneer really needs to do is add to their lineup a stepup player from the BDP-80FD and BDP-170, yet a stepdown model from the BDP-85FD, replacing the BDP-52FD, BDP-53FD, BDP-62FD, BDP-440, BDP-450, and BDP-LX55. Right now, I'm using a BDP-52FD with the new SC-81 A/
V receiver and I couldn't be happier. I just wish they'd get the bugs out of bitstreaming hi-res formats-occasional skips and audio dropouts.

Nah, again. My interest in disc spinners and 4K is ZERO. I have CD's that sound better than some Blu Ray audio titles, all depends on the quality of the authoring. But yes, Blu Ray audio is hard to beat.

Yes .. a BIG yes , "some may beg-to-differ " when it comes to the Pioneer BDP-62-FD with some playback/issues but for me the player has & is a budget beating All-rounder that just can't be beaten @ its price-point back then. in-spite of the issues for some .the BDP-62
is a beast of a multitask er from BD/3D,BD/DVD/CD-R/SACD/DVD-AUDIO/WAV/FLAC/J-PEG/ HI-RES audio files , you name it the 62-FD played it .. i also owned the BDP-51/23/52

You had the 52? What made you switch from the 52 to the 62? The 53 and 62 hdmi resolution don't go down to 480i, only 480p. Also, Someone here at AVS claims that in order for PQLS to work with the 62, you need to run an additional HDMI cable from the HDMI sub output to an HDMI input on a Pioneer receiver. I don't like the two-cable idea. With the 52, I have resolution from 480i-1080p and PQLS bitstream for all audio formats via a single HDMI cable between the receiver and player. With the new SC-81 receiver, the DSD-to-PCM frequency (88.2 KHz or 176.4 KHz) no longer matters to me, since the receiver is converting the DSD directly to analog.

I will buy it only if there's any real improvement over Oppo-95, which also has ESS9018 DAC inside and plays SACD.

Pioneertop-

suspiciously, Sony/Phillips/Pioneer called it quits last year making laser assembly (cd/dvd) drives for players. We know that TEAC (Esoteric), Yamaha, Sanyo still makes these types of drives.
Did I miss any other Japanese company?
