Owners of the 5500, 3500, or 1500: Can you confirm that your player has an IP Noise Reduction setting in the main menu under Screen Settings or in the Options menu while you are streaming?

Thank you!

I tried again today while streaming Netflix. As usual, while streaming, the Options menu will not open. It opens during disc playback only (during which, as expected, IP NR is not listed). Apparently my 5100 just does not have IP NR. I appreciate your help trying.
It doesn't show up when using Netflix. It will show up when streaming from Amazon. Not sure what other streaming apps it shows up with. I only tested it quickly with Netflix and then Amazon. I guess I should have mentioned in my post that I didn't see it with Netflix streaming.

Thank you for checking it and providing an update. That explains it.

It does not make much sense to have IP NR and not be able to use it with the most popular streaming service.

I am glad the feature is now available while streaming Netflix with the 6500. I wish I knew if the non-Pro version of it is included in the 5500 and usable on Netflix before I purchase one.

Again, thank you.

Netflix doesn't need IP NR, Youtube and other low bitrate videos do. If you have Netflix problems, then you need to look at your internet speed, not dubious NR band-aids.

The marketing specs indicate that those models have it. The manual does not show it and no method to set it which could mean it's there but fixed. Sorry, not much help. The S6500 "manual" doesn't mention it either, but the specs show it(Pro version). Sony often has a disconnect between the product and the documentation.

That makes no snese. It's available for Amazon streaming and Amazon has some 1080P content that is better than Netflix. ANd Ip Noise reduction Pro seemed to easily improve what I saw from Netflix 1080P streaming. At least when compared to TiVo Roamio and Roku3. All stream the highest 1080P encodes.

Would it be possible to post any screenshots, just of Roku vs. Sony with IP NR Pro?

Problem is, no matter how hard I look, I don't see much noise to begin with. Sony says they have, "incorporated IP Content Noise Reduction Pro technology to improve the appearance of low-resolution clips streamed from the web." So, like I said, it isn't meant for Netflix. I have no idea why it would be available for Amazon even. Applying this to high resolution content with virtually no noise to begin with seems that it would detect detail as noise, hence reduce it, giving everything a possibly sharper, yet artificial, almost cartoonish look. That's why I'd love to see some examples. On all my previous Sony's it had an overall negative effect to my eyes.

The noise isn't from streaming it's just from the source. i found the image was a little cleaner after the IP nOise Reduction Pro(at least I'm assuming that is why it looked cleaner from my S6500) and then once going through the Darbee Darblet it looked better since it had a slightly cleaner image to work with.

Indeed, Sony's info is a mess. That is why I am hoping an owner of a 5500, 3500, or 1500 can check if their player actually offers IP NR when streaming Netflix.

Sony's website is so disorganized that the 6500's manual is not available in their support section (it has only a brief setup guide). But a link to the manual can be found on the 6500's main information page, here (see In the Box):

http://store.sony.com/3d-streaming-b...pfm%3Dcategory

The manual has info about IP NR Pro on page 30.

As for the 5500, the Sony USA manual does not include IP NR. But I just discovered the feature is in the Sony Europe manual on page 24:

http://download.sony-europe.com/pub/...4549800112.pdf

If the U.S. version of the 5500 has IP NR, the question remains whether it works on Netflix.

Unless hands-on word to the contrary appears here, I will assume that the 5500's application of IP NR (if it has the feature) is the same as on the 5100. I learned today that my 5100 fails to provide IP NR on both Netflix and Hulu, my favorite streaming apps.

Sony Europe's user manual for the 5500 shows that IP NR is accessed via the Options menu, the same as I'm told here with the 5100. It is thus reasonable to conclude it likely works the same way on both players. The 6500 has its version, IP Content NR Pro, in the main menu instead, where it noticeably improved detail with no ill effects with Netflix and Hulu.

I really liked the superior picture quality via IP NR Pro. Thus, I will wait for the 6500 that will replace the glitch-ridden one that was returned to Best Buy. I pre-ordered a 6500 about 10 days ago from the good folks at Crutchfield. It is not listed yet on their website, but they are taking telephone orders for a guaranteed price of $129.99 with free shipping.

After having so many problems with my 6500, Crutchfield's generous 60-day refund policy is more reassuring than Best Buy's 15 days.

Thank you, Aaron and Joe, for your input.

Well my wife ordered the S5500 for me this morning and it will ship tomorrow. Before I had her order it I checked out the online reviews and alot of them were very very positive so I had a choice between the 6500 and the 5500 and went with the 5500. My reason's are that both units are almost identicle in performance and appearance save for the 4K upscaling of the 6500 which I have no need for since 4K is not in my future plans. So its the 5500 and hopefully it arrives this weekend for my birthday.

Sony is soooo *DI S CON NE CT ED* that when i tried to register my S5500 on their website ~2wks.ago,they didn't even have the S5500 listed.
Got A message that Sony Reps.would try to determine if the S5500 was actually a Sony product!!
Had to register it by phone.

Here you go. It really didn't do anything. There are slight "differences" at full resolution, but nothing worth mentioning. Not better, just different...SBM is a joke.

I also revised my earlier post to have the downloadable image file names in the correct order.

Thanks Dreamliner. Yeah, looks like SBM doesn't do a heck of a lot, if anything. The S5500 is looking more appealing ...

SBM is another one of the features I turn off. The dual core of the S6500 doe smake a difference, but that is with the loading of Java BDs. I have most definitely seen a difference with that. Although you are still only talking a second or three faster than my S5100. When there is a noticeable difference in speed.

I'm curious if anyone else has the vertical line on the left or right side? I have a vertical green line on the left side during loading screens, and you can see in the comparison pics from my earlier post that there is a slight image shift on the 5500...

I wonder why they took IP Noise Reduction Pro away from your new S6500? I have it in my old S6500 under Setup/Screen Settings, just like my S6200.

Thank you, Chip, but I was asking about the Sony 5500, 3500, or 1500.

Your 6500 does have IP Content NR Pro, though. You'll find it in the main menu under Screen Settings. Scroll down near the end of the list and you will see it.

Give it a try, you might like the small but worthwhile improvement it makes to the picture while streaming. So far, I've preferred a setting of Film 2.
