Best Buy has it up for preorder as well. They're claiming a release date of 2/21 on their website.

I wish it was Feb, but at this point I have to say Crutchfield has a better track record on release dates (and they say March).

Yamaha RX-A2050 AVR [v1.81], LG 65EF9500 4K OLED [v4.25.70]
5.0.2 set-up: (4) Polk Monitor 10B's, (2) Polk Monitor 4's, Polk CS300 center

I pre-ordered just now from Best Buy with the 2/21 date. For $399 for my bedroom OLED, why not? :P

I'll get the Oppo when I update my primary set to 4K...

Stuck up, half witted, scruffy looking, nerf herder.

Just a quick note. This is an entry level U-Ray player and most likely does not support DolbyVision HDR. Also, that curve is silly, but on the bright side it is only $399 for sort of newish tech.

Steve at Crutchfield
I have to ask what the source is for UltraHD Blu-rays being region free. The BDA have been very quiet so far on the hard details such as this and I can't find any source from the BDA or one of their members that states this'll be region free. Are Crutchfield just printing rumour as fact or have Samsung told them directly?

Secondly, the page claims that this is the worlds first Ultra HD Blu-ray player, which is a claim other websites have made but is incorrect. It's the first available outside Japan but this mistake makes me question the accuracy of the region free claim.

It does not work that way. All UHD blue ray players will support DV. It's how the disc is encoded that will determine if it's DV or hdr10 , and also if the tv can read the DV metadata . So just to clarify all UHD blue ray players will play whatever the disc is encoded in and it's up to the tv to decode that encoded metadata.

Samsung UBD-K8500 UHD player: release info and price

C|Net posted a brief statement a few minutes ago that Samsung's first UHD player will become available sometime in March. Here is a link:

http://www.cnet.com/products/samsung-ubd-k8500/

Also, Crutchfield is taking preorders. The price is $399.99. Here's a link:

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_305BDK8...00.html?tp=171

EDIT: I just noticed the above is already included in an earlier thread.

I did a pre-order with Best Buy and they are indicating expedited free delivery by Feb 21 release date. I also found news that the first Warner UHD Blu-Ray titles will be released on Feb 22 (a Monday?). Nice that the Samsung has two HDMI outs. One is A/V and the other audio only. In the past I have experienced that Best Buy only accepts pre-orders up to the number of units expected by release date. Recently Best Buy apparently negotiated an earlier than general release date on a couple of Sony high end camera products. Will be interesting if the Best Buy date is accurate or that CNET indicating March is correct?

UPDATE - Went back to Best Buy website and they have changed expected delivery date from Feb 21 (a Sunday) to Feb 22 (a Monday).

This is a different world. That was during the days of a format war. The BD and HD-DVD folks needed to do things to convince you to go their direction, even if it meant taking a loss. "You're giving away 2 BD discs? Then I guess we'll give away 5 HD-DVDs!" Today though, if you want UHD on a disc, there is only one option. And especially since Samsung is first to market, their pitch is "If you want 4k on a disc, we're the only game in town" so they really don't need to sweeten the deal! We can hope it'll have some freebies, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I was much more prepared with thousand to $1,200 UHD players at launch. I figured maybe by the end of 16 maybe drop down to like five or six hundred dollar stripped-down versions and I might be able to score of $300 halfway decent one by 2017.

Given that very little content viewing I do comes from discs at this point it'll probably the last thing that I pick up and it probably won't be a first generation product, unless it's highly regarded affordable and on clearance making way for the 2017 S

I'm also interested in what Sony an Xbox will end up doing before I buy a stand alone

Just Pre-ordered the Samsung UBD-K8500 at Best Buy.

$399 plus sales tax.

High hopes! Coming from an Oppo BDP-93, I'll need the Samsung to be excellent.

HD Dude

Sorry, if it's not in UHD, I won't watch it!

So according to this from the manual :

"If your TV does not support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) version 2.2, some of
Ultra HD Blu-ray titles may play at the 1080p resolution"

I wonder if "may play" means that some will still play 4K and some will play 1080p or if it means that some will play 1080p and some will not play at all...

I knew the US versions would be affordable and I bet the discs will be not much more than what current blurays are. Having expensive players would be shooting themselves in the foot with much the market is pushing and selling 4k tvs now.

Hopefully there will be a way to disable HDR on this player for those who don't wish to watch HDR. There are current tv's out there that are borderline HDR capable, like my OLED, and I would like to be able to toggle that off. I guess I could always get a HDMI 2.0 switch to trick the player into thinking the tv is not HDR capable.

Best Buy does, not sure about Samsung. The other thing about BB pre-orders is that they usually ship them on release date, meaning you don't get it until 5 days later

WRONG

dolby vision is optional on discs AND players. the interviews I have read with BDA execs have been very clear about this. in order to watch DV, you need all 3 criteria: tv, disc, player.

I recall the first blu ray players....I bought one the 2nd year they were out...and LG Combo player(BH200) that played HDDVD and Blu ray for $650 and that was a steal at the time
Took about 3-4 minutes to load a movie ..lol

I bought an open box Samsung 4K upscaling BD player with 2 HDMI outputs( open box) at Best Buy for $49 two months ago...it is better in every way, except build quality and lack of HD DVD capability
Times have changed..though
The market is so saturated with products, the public doesnt seem to want to spend the money( or see the value) and the Chinese seem to be able to copy items quickly and cheaply
example...there are a few 4K 65" TV's in the market now for sub $1000
Really...you can buy the best UHD television for less than even a mid range 1080P was years ago
At the end of one season( or less) these things end up at Best Buy with prices of 60-75% off MSRP

trust me...that is when I do my buying and post deals here on AVS
Years ago...I didnt see electronics sitting at large retailers unsold with hefty discounts just to move product that was gathering dust
Anything the manufacturers want to be a mass market item has got to be priced where the mass market will buy it

I will "go out on a ledge here" and say that this $399 price will have to fall VERY quickly if they want to sell these players in numbers
At $399..its a niche product

really...we live in a market where standard DVD is still good enough for the masses

I owned the Samsung BDP-1000 or whatever it was called. Big and buggy brick, and it cost me like $900. Ended up with a PS3 for awhile.
