Not sure about the Panasonic but the Samsung player has 5.1 Dolby Digital + where as my TV only has 5.1 DD, that might be a reason for some to use the player vs. the TV.

LOL, states player is only for playing discs and then says to use TV for apps. LOL, like tv is designed to do apps as a primary function...

So why does the manufacturer include the app in the software that comes with the blu ray player if its not meant to be used for that ?

IMO, blu-ray players and streaming boxes (nvidia shield and Roku) are the ideal devices for video apps, not the display. The apps on the display tend to stop getting updated whereas the Roku's won't. Even blu-ray players lose support after a while, but in my experience they offer some of the best AV experiences with video apps.

For example the Samsung UHD player does Netflix streaming in 24hz

Im hoping the Panny has nice Netflix and Amazon app performance.

The Roku is a poor choice since it doesn't have HDR.

The Roku will likely have it at some point, my guess would be around the Christmas season .

Why the pessimism? I'd rather some delay than quickly introducing a half-baked product plagued with issues.

I've had Panasonic blu-ray players in the past (including DMP-BDT350 when it came out) and they are great players. I currently own an Oppo BDP93 but can't wait for the new Panasonic UHD player and also waiting to see what Oppo will release!

As far as I remember Roku has always stated that Roku 4 has the ability to do HDR.

They stated that they will update to HDR if their is a call to do so

I just think that the format wars in regard to HDR will not be resolved until 2020

Since this is not a Roku thread that is all I will state on this matter.

Hi all,
I couldn't wait and ended up purchasing this unit from Europe. Anyone here who has done so have any information on changing the power cable or what you are doing for powering the device (voltage converter, etc.)...I bought the unit last week (still waiting for it to arrive) and then I saw the news of the September release in the US...doh! Oh well, if anyone out there has any thoughts, I'd appreciate it.

Thx

I also have an Oppo BDP93 and I using the Philips BDP7501 until my Panasonic ships in 3 weeks then I will return the Philips to Amazon. The Panasonic will be awesome but can't wait to see what Oppo comes up with especially since it converts PAL/NTSC and mine is region free. I dont want to have 3 players

Hey gents. Just picked up the DMP-UB900 yesterday here in Toronto ON. Sorry you US folk have to wait.

I had a question though. Have any of you heard of a 4K moniker called ULTRA HD PREMIUM.?

http://www.panasonic.com/ca/consumer...dmp-ub900.html

The manual states nothing of this "standard" when playing 4K BD.

Also my box states only the Ultra HD Bluray.

Have no fear my friend. I have been importing electronic gear from the UK, Europe and Japan for many years now. So any questions you have I can probably answer.

So the first thing you need is a step down transformer to convert the european 220v 50hz. This is where the problems begin.

First question for you is where in Europe did you purchase? I need the country. You see some players are 220v 50hz and some are 220v 50/60hz, you need a player that is 50/60hz. If the player is 50hz only then it will play slightly faster. No way to know for sure how bad it is until you get the player. Once I know the player I can find out which current it uses. Getting a converter that will change 50hz to 60hz will cost you more the player so its not even worth while talking about.

As for the voltage getting a step down transformer is no problem, I have 3 of them so if you want a recommendation let me know and I will tell you where to buy one like mine. I have been using them for more than 10 years without a problem.

Anymore questions let me know.

Warden, did you purchase it directly from Panasonic Canada or from a retail store? If so, where? Did you pay MSRP?

Thanks

Yes the Panasonic is an ULTRA HD PREMIUM certified player. What this means is that it has been certified to meet certain 4K UHD specifications. Rather than list them all here check out this website and it will explain it.

Just so you know the Panasonic is the ONLY ULTRA HD PREMIUM 4K UHD certified player at the moment.

I have only 3 more weeks before mine is shipped from Japan

For the time being Im sure it will be only MSRP because of they way Panasonic is distributing these players to dealers.

NOTICE OF CANADIAN AVAILABILITY.

According to a local dealer the units shipped to them from Panasonic around July 25.

Here is a link to Panasonic Dealer Network.

http://help.panasonic.ca/english/sup...or/default.asp

It is available from Panasonic English Shopping but I am not sure if they ship out if Canada. Search Panasonic English Shopping Canada.

The unit is listed on sales for $799 CAD.

I bought mine from Audio Video 2001 in my local neighbourhood for $799.

Hope this helps guys. Let me know if I can help.

Thanks, Warden, that's great!! I am in Toronto so I can pick one up too. For those in the US, and if they ship at all, $799 CAD is $613 US. Not a bad price at all for the Panny. Now I wish I had held out and not get the Samsung. Oh well, perhaps I can sell the Sammy and recover some of the cost.

You can trade it in with Amazon and get the player through them if you can wait 8 weeks for the whole trade in procedure to take place

??? You do realize it's too late for that right? The Roku 4 was released around October 2015. It was (and some would argue still is) a half baked product that is plagued with issues.

Fortunately, the UB900 doesn't have that problem.

No worries.

Keep in mind or Ingalls CAD MSRP is $999. Some dealers are trying to get that. Mine as stated before through price matching from Trutone Missiauaga.

Sorry to keep talking prices I know it is kinda frowned upon. Just strange that Panasonic directly is offering for 20% less new into the Product life. I suspect it is a competitive thing the wide available Billy of the Samsung through Best Buy, often on sale.

Good luck Cheers

Thanks, didn't know it was possible to trade in with Amazon. I don't see the Panny listed on Amazon though (or anywhere except the link posted by Warden).

Edit: Actually, Trutone has it listed

Okay a question to anyone with good past experience with higher end BD players.

I have owned a Pioneer Elite BD-09 but IMO found it was only audio performance that separated it from my others (Oppo BD95). At the time it was delivering to my Kuro Elite 50" 101fd.

I still own the Opportunity 95 but also have a Marantz UD 7007 married to my Marantz SR 7010 AVR.

I am now considering selling my Oppo. But curious is anyone feels there will be better performance for Full HD BD with my Marantz UD7007 or should i just sell it too? And just use original BDs on the new Panny UB900.

Thoughts?

How do you find the response time from the UB900? Is it quick to load?

Just so you know the Panasonic is the ONLY ULTRA HD PREMIUM 4K UHD certified player at the moment.

"How do you find the response time from the UB900? Is it quick to load?"

Unfortunately I haven't cracked open the box. I am choosing to wait til my new 4K TV arrives and since it (TV ) is not a FALD set or OLED I am waiting to do black level & colour tests. Edge lit LED is hard to swallow coming from Pioneer Kuro Plasma.

I will screen grab your username and if I decide to open it I will let you know.

BTW I believe the original What HI Fi review of the Panny had loading times listed.

---------------quoted from What hifi--------------
It takes 30 seconds to get from the disc tray sliding shut to the UHD Blu-ray?s menu appearing
