I wonder if something like the Oppo wont allow for cutting HDR off.

I can confirm the Samsung player will down convert UHD discs to 1.4 HDMI inputs on 1080p TVs. However, the picture is blown out and I prefer the up-scaled blu-ray version. However, UHD discs look great on 4K TV. The Samsung is very buggy streaming and I've given up on using it for streaming YouTube or Netflix, using the built-in player in the TV. Will probably just use the Samsung for playing 4K discs and use my old blu-ray player for blu-ray discs so I can have a dedicated HDMI input on my TV for 4K and keep separate settings. Since my receiver is not 4K compliant, have to run audio direct to receiver and video direct to TV. Blu-ray running through receiver is much more convenient. Since there are likely to be VERY few 4K discs available, I doubt I'll be using the Samsung much. I don't really feel it's worth $399 to watch a hand-ful of UHD discs, but wanted to see the best 4K had to offer since I am getting my new 940c. If I'm not impressed, may return it.

Yeah for me it's not at all a case of cutting out HDR, I didn't pick up the JVC just before the debut of UHD discs to lose one of the key points of difference to older non-HDR projectors like my 1100 or 600. I just want to see it work as intended without a lot of adjustment at the projector end, some owners do believe this could be something a JVC firmware update could address. There's an owner or two who think they've got it working sufficiently well though. The bigger issue right now is the Samsung's insistence in putting out a 4:4:4 60p signal that's out of spec for the menu screens that's taking the JVC out of its input display capabilities. This can be fixed by Samsung in a firmware update.

Whats odd is, I booted the player tonight after updating my Denon to HDMI 2.0a to check it out. The Denon reported the player being 2160p 420 8 bit in the menu. Very odd.

This whole launch has been a clusterscrew and some will be luckier than others this first gen year. Hopefully it evens out with FW updates, etc...

I wish the Panny would have launched now too so we had options.

+1. If the Sammy had been a functional success as a its pricing was, I probably wouldn't be overly concerned with the Panasonic myself. But with all the dramas so far, I say def, please give us the choice of the Panasonic!

I'm quite probably going to cancel my backorder on the Samsung and put in a preorder for the Panasonic. Later I can almost guarantee I'll buy the Oppo as well as its bound to be quality unit like all of their players to date- since I've got a few 4K display devices it won't phase me to have more than one player.

No real headaches for me using the Samsung 8500 with the Sony 940C. I am not crazy about how cheaply it appears to be made and the remote control is way to small but the overall video performance appears pretty good.

Yeah, really panel owners are at the simplistic end of the spectrum with the 8500, though a few Samsung owners ironically have had issues. The real issue as I mentioned also is for projector guys like JVC RS owners.

Does anyone know if this player is able to do vertical stretch with UHD blu rays?

oink 02-26-2016 09:59 AM

Do we have the specs yet on this player?

G-Rex 02-26-2016 04:35 PM

Has it been confirmed yet that this player is/is not coming to the US?

Yes it was at CES, that's why we're here discussing it. The Japanese market only player released 13th November is the DMR-UBZ1.

http://shop.panasonic.com/about-us-l...ay-player.html

The question now is will it get released in April or not as not much info has trickled through still to confirm.

Anderslober 02-29-2016 01:07 PM

It is coming! There has just been a huge 4K Panasonic convention in Frankfurt.
Launch must be imminent!

It's being released in the UK mid April.

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/ub900-201602294254.htm

http://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer...p-ub900eb.html

RRP £599 - a lot less than the £1000.000 that was mentioned. It's comimg with Fury Road and San Andreas included in the price, possibly in the box.

Can't wait for this.

Cla55clown 02-29-2016 04:12 PM

Fantastic! I love the idea of it coming with a couple good UHD titles in the box. Let's hope for some reviews soon.

How much does that translate into US dollars?

So that would make it around $800.00 if I am doing the math correctly?

Roughly, however the same product is generally cheaper to buy in the states than the uk.

Anderslober 03-01-2016 09:39 PM

Audio stuff is horrendously expensive in the UK. Even compared to DK.

An example: Marantz av8802a......UK/34000dkk......DK/24000dkk.(cheaper than the US!)

Even the the bdt700......UK/5000dkk........DK/3400dkk.

I expect the 900 to be about 6-700usd............in DK around 4-5000dkk.

Yep, A/V gear is horrendously priced in the UK. I used to go stores with my old man who used to buy hifi gear from places there few back when he spent a lot time over there and had place there. It was generally always a case of being able to swap the amount of £ for the of dollars you'd pay in the US comparatively. I complain bitterly at times about the prices down here in Oz, which aren't great by any stretch, but definitely not UK bad:eek:.

Troy LaMont 03-03-2016 11:09 AM

Sounds like a great player, build quality is nice (saw it at CES) but I find it interesting (odd) that they don't mention HEVC file playback in any of the information I've come across. I'm sure it has to support it, but may have omitted it as being a given?

Also, everyone seems to be counting on an Oppo UHD Blu-ray player...has Oppo made an official announcement regarding such?

Cla55clown 03-03-2016 11:26 AM

Last I heard was end of 2016 (for Oppo). Probably all just rumors at this point.

Oppo support has also told people that when the 4k players come out they will be discontinuing their 1080p models.

If they're smart they would have them ready for Christmas. Imagine the feeding frenzy from AVS members alone. :)
