So you are saying that you can still choose one of the 9 different enhanced sound settings and still send it via HDMI, so the processing you are talking about is the processing of the enhanced sound setting of your choice, before sending it via HDMI for your AVR's DAC's do the heavy lifting. I didn't know that was possible but by no means am I expert when it comes to this.

Anybody know what the update fixes or new features added?

Its still not even listed on Panasonic's support site (still showing Firmware 1.50):

Just Google "ub900 firmware". You'll find it.

Found it.

Says "HEVC MP4 file playback support" whatever that means.

Just so this doesn't cross anyone up - this update was actually released a few days ago, not today.

Playback support of files encoded with the HEVC codec in the MP4 container (from network or USB storage).

Can someone please help clarify the below points..

1. Does this device see and read Windows Media Player Playlist?

2. Can this device be used headless for music playback, through the app?

If I leave this player sitting idle too long on its main menu (15 min? 30 min?) it automatically powers off. Is there a setting to prevent that? I looked all over the settings/options but don't see anything that would prevent that. Thanks.

Nope: energy ratings have driven many CE devices to do this the last few years (although this one is pretty short).

I think I found a major flaw with the YouTube App in this player.

My internet runs above 100mbs on the speed test in the Player and I can also get 4K on the Netflix and Amazon apps but not on YouTube.

This can be easily verified by activating video info in the YouTube app settings.

Can anyone confirm if they are seeing the same problems?

Yes I am also having a problem getting full 4K. The best I seem to get is 1440 but not 2160 & sometimes only 1080. I also don't seem to get the same internet speed from the player as I get from the TV.

This limitation (if confirmed) along with the lack of support for VUDU is enough for me to return this $700 player which should include these features.

New owner of UB900, comming from K8500.
Two quick questions:

1. How can I see playback stats from Netflix? (Se a screen overlap with bitrare, resolution being played and such).

2. On my UHD discs Expendables 3 and Ender's Game, there are know flag issuse. Resulting not getting ink black, but rather greyish.
K8500 solved this by setting the player to RGB Enhanced. That gave med 4k HDR with ink blacks.
On UB900 I can not get 4k HDR withouth being grey blacks. RGB Enhanced resulting in down grading the HDR to SDR.
Which settings do I use on disc as mentioned to get HDR with ink blacks?

The 900 does not have a Netflix debug menu, unfortunately.

What I have started doing on these devices like the new Roku Ultra, that do not have the menu, is going into the settings, help, and network test section of the Netflix app. It will test all 3 servers, your internet connection, and then a speed test. I usually get back 40-50 mbps from their server, so then I just assume I am getting the 12k or 16k 2160p

I think most of us have custom BT.2020 color and Gamma profiles specifically designed for 4k/HDR content.
No need to change anything in the player.

I don't think you read my post carefully enough.
It's a know issus with a couple of very early release UHD discs.
The discs are "faulty". But I was able to get "around" the fault on my Samsung UBD-K8500 player.

My display is a Samsung UE65JS9500 fully capable of BT2020, inky black HDR and so on.
So Pacific Rim is all inky black. But the problem is regarding some "faulty" titles.

Hit Picture Setting and Luminance/Color Adjustment. Adjust Black Gamma as needed.

Use ycbcr out and have your tv/projector set at standard/limited. I dealt with the same issues with the Samsung.

Did that, or... I did not find the word "gamma" but downed the other values towards ink black. Result is giving dim upper light, so no HDR feel to the picture. Juste muted down towards black.

Well, setting my display to limited will not give me HDR picture, and therefore no point in buying a HDR disc if I'm setting for a "limited" display.

Either, I'm not explaining my self very well,
or.....you are not getting it
.or the UB900 can not "correct" the mis-authored discs?

Again, with my setup, BT2020, HDR with all the bells and whistles. My previously Samsung K8500 player could give med ink black HDR picture on the mentioned discs. (Extender's Game and The Expendables 3).
The Panasonic can not correct the image to ink blacks with HDR.

Neither were great movies, so it begs the question,
if it's only those two, just how often do you watch them that makes this such a problem?

Expendables 3 was a poorly rated 4K/HDR transfer, so you'd be better off using the regular 1080 Bluray
that also came in the same package (with Dolby Atmos on both discs).

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Ex...lu-ray/147733/

Not all 4K's look better than their 1080 counterpart, this was one of them,
Warcraft is another example (thankfully also came with Atmos on the regular bluray)

If that's not going to work for you I guess you're forced to deal with it or go back to a Samsung player.

I think the answer is you can't, but is there a way to have the ub900 output a disk resolution automatically - I don't want it upscaling less then 4K material as I have preferred downstream scaling

Thanks

This afternoon replaced the k8500 w/the ub 900 purchased at BB.
Few subtle observations. BTW, my setup, Sony 930D, Sony soundbar HTC 370.
1 First, & most important, Noticable improvement in PQ! Crispness, color rendation, all a nice bonus!
2 Sound-for whatever reason, much improved, to include greater realism.
3 Great remote w/wonderful options that simply do so much more than mini Samsung.
Worth $700 bucks. Not sure, although with the Holidays on the horizon, feel the price will drop nicely.
Have a Great Weekend Everyone!
Oh, BTW, 4K on YouTube looks Fantastic!

Panasonic DMP-UB900 thread.

Are you sure you are able to get true 4K in YouTube?
Hit the up arrow during playback to make sure because I am unable to get 4K on this player wireless or Ethernet.

All my other 4K streaming devices work fine including Roku Ultra , Nvidia Shield and the Samsung K8500 that I had before the Panasonic.

Kelvin; Trust me, I know a 4K presentation when viewed! Up arrow brings no response. When pressing the display button on my Sony remote, it indicates 3840by2160. Picture simply Fantastic!!

Jerry

The issue is that if the player upconverts everything to 4K the the display device may indicate 4K even if YouTube is only sending a 1080p signal.

The best way to know for sure is to go to the the YouTube settings and select the display video info box. Then try to see if you are really getting 4K.

A lot of times the 1080p video looks so good that it's hard to tell...

Kelvin; You are correct my friend. BTW, on YouTube, as a reference viewed Sonys' promo, "Another World" & a couple of short videos called Tokyo Street Views. 3840*2160 resolution when viewed on the TV app, & 2560*1440 w/the Panasonic app. Visually, hardly a discernible difference IMO. Couple of other points-When turning off the Samsung, the tv would automatically revert back to the last channel viewed. Not so w/the Panasonic-am I doing something wrong? Finally, & most important to all of us-PQ when watching 4K discs. Wow, what a difference IMO!! Watched both the Revenant & The Martian in total once again, & both were so more enjoyable experiences! Right now, is the ub900 overpriced-probably. But in the end feel as though it's a keeper. Take Care-Jerry

Glad you are enjoying the Panasonic, I am too.
However, I find it unacceptable that it can't do YouTube 4K and also has no VUDU app.

Even the Samsung K8500 (which is only $250) has support for both of these.

Hopefully they fix this at some point.

Whoops. You know what, I have no experience with HDR. I'm still rolling 8 bit SDR with BT2020. I assumed that the 10 bit HDR was still recorded and displayed as "limited." Meaning that instead of getting the full 0-1023 10 bit (0-255 in 8 bit) range you would get 64-960 10 bit limited (16-235 8 bit).

I guess that is not the case with 10 bit? Because when using 8 bit, these discs do not have any black level below 16.
