I had an Xbox One S for a week. I hated the slow laggy UI, there weren't any games I cared about, and the Blu-ray player app felt like an afterthought that MS just threw in so they could say it has 4K UHD BD playback on the box.

I got the Costco KM85C (same thing as KM8500) and it feels like an actual player that Samsung cares about, because well that's the difference between a standalone player and a console. People got spoiled by the PS3 and thought all game consoles were amazing disc players as well, but so far PS3 has been the only console that was as good as or better than a standalone player. Even the PS4 is kind of a crappy BD player by comparison, and the PS4 Pro doesn't even support 4K UHD BD.

I also had the Xbox one s for about a week. Not a bad disc player by any means but the gaming part would be wasted on me so I had to send it back. I didn't like that you had to send PCM already mixed to your AVR either. Same sound....supposedly. I also didn't care for the UI. Sort of clunky and those button noises were awful. It did play every disc I threw at it, including some DVDs and rental discs. No problems there. Once the 8500 went on sale though it became a no brainer to just get the stand-alone player which IMO is better overall.

It's simple, really. If you enjoy gaming and will use that aspect of the machine then the Xbox is an easy decision. It's a decent player. If you do not game at all though I suggest one of the stand alone players. That's all.

Hi everyone, sorry for the question, I've just bought this UHD player and I have a problem. Is just my unit or it's not possible to reproduce DTS audio inserted in a MKV.

I've a couple of Mkv's and Dolby digital sounds but the DTS doesn't. Thank you.

I need to know this too. All my MKV's are encoded in DTS HD Master or Dolby True HD.
DTS MA and Dolby True HD are not supported. Dolby Digital and DTS should be supported.

I just tried playing a Dolby True HD Atmos MKV clip and got a message popup that Dolby True HD is not supported. There must not have been a DD audio track since all I got was silence. The same clip passes both True HD and Atmos from Total Media Theater on my HTPC to my AVR.

I also tried a DTS:X MKV clip that passes DTS:X from TMT on my HTPC. With the Samsung player I got only plain DTS.

Hi guys. I just picked up the player for the time being. I just want to make sure I have some settings correct from reading.

The main splash screen: it's always 444 12 bit right? so if i have a picture of it i know i'm good cdmi wire wise? i wasn't sure if that is set to a slow resolution out of the box?

My panel is a LG E6 OLED so should I have deep color on or off? if it's on it pushing 12 bit if off it pushing 10 bit correct? LG panels are 10 bit correct? not true 12 bit. so shouldn't pushing 10 bit to it with deep color off be the better choice?

Also the whole chroma output. . . auto or 444? if i set it to auto will it just put out 420 since an ultra blurry is 420 10 bit?

Finally. . . kinda off from this thread but someone with a new marantz. . . can i show what is actually getting to the marantz signal wise so i can see if it's doing what it should. the LG doesn't tell you anything useful. just if it's HDR or not and resolution.

thanks so much!

Deep colour: On on the LG, off on the Samsung.

Chroma, the Samsung can only do 444, it never does 420 or 422. Leave it on auto.

so if deep color is off on the samsung does that mean all goes out at 8 bit? even an ultra blurry which is 10 bit? so it would be down sampled then? just trying to understand what is actually happening.

so then since the samsung always puts out 444 does that mean the LG goes into PC mode? and i just don't know it does? or do i need to change it to PC mode to take advantage of the 444 output?

Deep color off on the player is 10bit 4:4:4. On will be 12bit 4:4:4. Many people experience some color banding when deep color is turned on.

On the Samsung, deep colour on means upscale to 12-bit. Off means output native bit (so blu ray 8-bit, UHD 10-bit).

hey guys,

thanks. i have the player on now. so on my lg i have deep color on cause i was told to keep it on.

on the samsung. i was saying on vs auto for deep color. . . . so with it on "auto" everything goes out at 12 bit. and with "off" i get native.

So i would assume going with off would make more sense cause you get the native output of the disk so the panel can do what it needs to go vs going back and forth with bit rates?

back to the 444 and pc mode. . . why wouldn't i want to go into pc mode to take advantage of the 444 vs the panel changing it back to 422 or 420? is it because it just doesn't matter?

this is all very confusing.

The TV doesn't need to go into PC mode to deal with 4:4:4. It can display 4:4:4, and it does, and will do so with the proper calibration settings etc that you've chosen for TV watching. It won't change it back to 4:2:0 or 4:2:2, as it'd then have to re-scale it back to 4:4:4 to control the pixels.

ok i thought 444 could only be used in PC mode. that's what i didn't understand then.

so is my thought of keeping deep color set to off make sense cause you would want the disk being played to stay native 8 bit or 10 bit vs changing it to 12 bit since the LG isn't even a 12 bit panel?

thanks again. i really appreciate it!

since you know the LG well is there anyway to see what the LG is actually getting? i know i can see if it's HDR and 4k for resolution but can it also show somehow if the signal going to it is 8 bit or 10 bit or 444 or 420 ect?

thanks again. I'm thinking my new marantz can't but i know the denon's can which i find weird being they are pretty much the same company.

In your AVR menus there should be an information option for the video or audio signal. Also yes just leave deep color off on the player always.

How to Update Chrome Browser?

Hello - I just got the fantastic K8500 player a few days ago, and love it so far. I was even able to get a wired keyboard and mouse working with the Chrome web browser today. I did some random brwosing with Chrome, and while sometimes the web pages would look a little scrambled, for the most part it worked pretty well.

Now, I have the K8500 connected to my router with a wired Ethernet connection, and one thing I really wanted to be able to do was to stream videos over the Ethernet connection from my Amazon Prime account. I was able to stream videos from Youtube with Samsung's built-in Youtube app. - that worked just fine. However I cannot stream videos from Amazon. I was able to login to Amazon and select a video, but when I tried to play the video Amazon told me my Chrome browser was not current, and that I cannot play the video without first updating to the latest version of Chrome. Problem is I can't figure out how to do that. (BTW, the first time I fired up the K8500 it gave me a prompt to update to the latest firmware, and I did that. But apparently that was not sufficient.) Can someone out there tell me how to update Chrome in the K8500?

IIRC, you have to go into the settings and General and you'll find the video going through available there. It's a while since I got rid of my D&M receiver.

Claw, thanks for the prompt feedback. I will definitely pick one up this weekend. wil

Hi, Finally pickup a Samsung k8500, over the weekend. Yes, I gave up waiting for the oppo 203 ( may still be getting one, when available ).
I will be connecting the k8500 to the Sony XBR75x940d? Anyone has recommendation setting for the the k8500 and 940d ( if require ). As this will be my first 4k player.

Thanks as always ....

I previously used my samsung tv remote but it stopped working when I got a new AVR and started feeding the k8500 thru it instead of the tv.
