Pretty much any Samsung Blu-ray Player remote developed in the last 10 years will do the job and unlike the one that came with the K8500 with the odd sized replacement battery the following takes 2 x AAA batteries.

The AK59-00167A or something similar can generally be found on eBay or Amazon for under $10 bucks!

Note: To avoid remote clutter, owners of Samsung televisions that have elected to use their TV's Univeral Remote feature, can use their existing TV remote in conjunction with the Overlay Screen that pops up when they press the Menu/123 button to perform all the functions found on the Blu-ray Player remote.

Did this within the first month of owning the deck. The one that comes with it is a sad joke.

Thanks very much. I hate it when I fall for the first pdf site result on Google and end up looking at an outdated manual (the one I looked at had only 28 pages, so I was like wtf!)

My K8500 is set to arrive tomorrow and I can't wait to set it up. Going to read that entire pdf now.

As for the remote, I plan on giving it a chance first and seeing if it does everything I need. I have a very large Netflix queue of BDs and 4k BDs ready to feed it, and I'll know in short order whether it's a sufficient option or not.

I noticed a similar issue when I attempt to run the Atmos demos off of a usb stick. They run fine on my old Samsung BD-J5900 player but I get the unsupported audio on this one. I found a work around, after starting the video selecting tools on the remote and changing the audio for the video to the second choice. Can't remember exactly how it was presented, if it said language or track but you should be able to tell if it is the same issue.

Cheers!

So, I just got the k8500 to go with my Vizio P series TV (2016), which supports Dolby Vision and HDR10. I have a couple questions for advice.

1. I see that apps on this player still do not support HDR. I thought this was something Samsung promised. Will Netflix, Vudu, Youtube, and Amazon ever get support for HDR? I mostly care about Amazon bc I can't stream it from my TV.

2. Do you think the lack of support stems from the need for HDMI 2.1 to stream dynamic HDR metadata? That shouldn't affect streaming of HDR10 though.

3. I am still within my return period (Until Feb. 1) for this player. I love the pic with HDR10 blurays on my vizio so far. But should I return it and wait for the LG player with DV? Would I even be able to send that to my TV without hdmi 2.1?

So many questions and uncertainties. I would like to be set for a good couple of years here.

I have the vizio and this player as well and the amazon app does support HDR. You have to find the show with the HDR badge on it in order to get the HDR stream.

So it's just Netflix that doesn't support it yet?

Also, just curious, are the Amazon shows Dolby Vision or HDR10?

I'm pretty sure Netflix does not. But you can just cast netflix to the TV and get Dolby Vision anyway. Amazon is just HDR that I know of.

Great! That solves the HDR for streaming apps issue. Now I just have to consider whether not being able to send DV from UHD BD discs is something I can live with. And again, will it even be possible since my Vizio is not hdmi 2.1? Also, i've read in another recent post on AVS that some people are experiencing color banding in streaming and UHD BD discs. Has anyone experienced that? If so, is there a fix?

1. Amazon HDR is supported, but you have to select the UHD version of a show that has HDR. There's much speculation and disagreement on whether Netflix HDR support will materialize. I can't speak as to the vudu or youtube.

2. It doesn't have anything to do with HDMI 2.1 or HDMI 2.0b for that matter. HDMI 2.0a is what is needed. For example, Chromecast Ultra gets Netflix and Youtube HDR and Xbox One S gets Netflix HDR.

3. Only you can figure out the price and feature comparison.

I appreciate your responses, thanks! I know hdr10 can be passed through hdmi 2.0a, but I have read about the possibility that HDR with dynamic metadata may possibly be passed only through an upgraded hdmi 2.1.

And have you had any color banding issues with this player?

Yeah - this is one of my two significant gripes with this player, it won't play TrueHD or DTS-HD MA off USB (which even the $49 player I have upstairs does without issue). Choosing the DD+ track does work for those files that have it (including some of the Atmos demos), but for others you're out of luck. fwiw, the other gripe is that, when streaming, the player frequently loses audio sync. My understanding is that this is a common issue with other 4k streaming devices as well - but it is aggravating nonetheless. For UHD Blu-ray however, I've nothing but good things to say about the K8500.

If this is to be believed:

http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/hdmi_2_1/index.aspx

HDMI 2.1 will include dynamic HDR support, but dynamic HDR support will not require HDMI 2.1

As far as I know, no manufacturers have announced release dates for any dynamic HDR products.

That's good to know. I guess the only thing I would be missing is DV on UHD Blu ray discs.

What is the possibility that this player is updated to support dynamic HDR (the HDR10 upgrade)?

Also, no one with info on the color banding issue with this player? Is there even an issue or was that just one poster in another forum?

..back onto the subject of the remote, there is one available similar to one pictured above for about $16 (might be from Samsung direct)...and it includes a backlight too. (Think it was mentioned in this thread recently)

I'm using my remote from the Samsung BD-C6900 and the remote model number is AK59-00104R. Works flawlessly.

From my (admittedly very limited) reading, dynamic HDR currently exists only in the ether. The content (BD's and streams) that would feature it will have to be programmed by the studios individually, on a film by film basis. And who knows how cost effective it will turn out to be. But depending on your hardware, the hdmi 2.1 spec that it will likely demand may be gotten from either a firmware or a physical upgrade (or both).

Regardless, from my perspective, this technology does not seem like it's "just around the corner". Of course I could be wrong.

Apps woes

I don't have enough posts to link quotes from previous posts here - but based on the ones I have read in this thread I have come to the following conclusions

Please - someone let me know if I have this right:

1. Recommended apps can't be changed at all. Not resequenced, moved to "my apps" or deleted - ONLY opened (even though when you look them up in the "categories" section and see there's a little download icon, it's completely irrelevant; in fact the app doesn't need to be listed at all because it's just a duplication of the "recommended" listing, and will only "open").

2. "My apps" can only consist of items from the 3 "menus" at the bottom of the apps page - with the exception of ones already appearing in "recommended apps", which can *only* be opened (I know this is kind of redundant based on my first point, but I want to be sure).

If that's true I just wasted an hour trying to get the key press correct and re-reading the useless help files. Also, it means the whole "apps" section has to be the worst I've ever seen in a "smart" A/V device.

I'm also on my 3rd remote in 6 months. Love the player, hate the apps setup and the remote. - haven't been able to figure out how to turn the player on/off or access the apps with my Harmony 650 so I have to keep using the Samsung remote for power and menus and the Harmony only once I have something playing.

If anyone can confirm my conclusions regarding the apps I'd appreciate it - it'll save me a bunch of time continuing to screw around with it.
