I don't see any harm. But it is not allowed in the US. Have you ever read the FBI warning at the beginning of every commercial disc?

Here in the UK it's not quite as bad, it's a "breach of copyright" which is "only" a civil offence .
As long as you don't sell/share it you're normally ok ripping for your own use. Criminal offences are "illegal", civil ones aren't. Of course, our media deliberately misreport any breach of copyright as "illegal", using terms like "illegal filesharing".

So these ripped blu-rays that prompted your first post containing DTS-HD and True-HD have commercials?

Likewise for your "humble collection" that you provided a link to that includes 424 titles? Based on my cursory glance it would appear unlikely that any of them would contain commercials either.

At any rate I don't really care what you do but perhaps this thread with 10,425 posts at last count with 445 of those that include the search term "lossless" might be a more on-topic thread to continue this discussion...

As to the rest of your post... what would you rather deal with on the UBD-K8500 (or any other Ultra HD Blu-ray Player that I am aware of)... what you classify as commercials (e.g. trailers and FBI warnings) or no audio, lol.

Of course you're are blaming me by saying in your last post:

And then saying in this post:

How mature is that!

Other than yourself, who really cares how many discs you have ripped?

Further to that I don't care what you "don't wanna watch". As you already mentioned (twice now) you don't have to if you use your old Sony player so time to move on.

I was watching episode 1 of the Blacklist in 4K on Netflix (stunning and full screen) and it just reminded me that I can't find any settings to get from letterbox to full screen on that Samsung input. If I watch a UHD, or a Blu ray, it will not go to full screen.
When a Sony Blu ray player was hooked up to that input, and I clicked "options" on the remote, the full range of "wide" options appeared and were available.
Now, they're gone. It's no deal breaker, but I'm totally OK with watching Blu Rays full screen, and now I can't.
I'm also wondering how I go into settings and change the fact that my 8500 remote automatically turns on my Sony TV, and switches to that input. That also bugs the crap out of me.
I would also love to be able to see what resolution the blu rays are being upscaled to. They're just gorgeous compared to my Sony blu ray player. I know that's probably partly settings.
Bumping since it was buried by crap.
Anyone have any idea why full screen isn't possible?

The only way it will be fulls screen is if the Aspect ratio is 1.78:1(16:9). Like most TV content is. And some movies. Most movies have a higher aspect ratio like 2.00:1, 1:85:1, 2.40:1 etc. So they will have black bars on them.
Unless the device has a way to zoom in on 4K content. Which I don't think most do. But then even if you zoomed in to fill the screen. You would cut off a large percentage of the picture, with higher aspect ratio titles, to fill the screen.

Just to add to the conversation -- although none of the UHD Blu-ray players that I am aware of provides the option, some TV's do such as those in the Samsung lineup include the option to o Zoom as shown in the attached thumbnails. In any case it creates a fun house effect by Stretching the image and makes Matt Damon's body appear elongated and the round tires becoming oblong in The Martian presented in 2:35 : 1...

Please - someone let me know if I have this right:

1. Recommended apps can't be changed at all. Not resequenced, moved to "my apps" or deleted - ONLY opened (even though when you look them up in the "categories" section and see there's a little download icon, it's completely irrelevant; in fact the app doesn't need to be listed at all because it's just a duplication of the "recommended" listing, and will only "open").

2. "My apps" can only consist of items from the 3 "menus" at the bottom of the apps page - with the exception of ones already appearing in "recommended apps", which can *only* be opened (I know this is kind of redundant based on my first point, but I want to be sure).

If that's true I just wasted an hour trying to get the key press correct and re-reading the useless help files. Also, it means the whole "apps" section has to be the worst I've ever seen in a "smart" A/V device.

I'm also on my 3rd remote in 6 months. Love the player, hate the apps setup and the remote. - haven't been able to figure out how to turn the player on/off or access the apps with my Harmony 650 so I have to keep using the Samsung remote for power and menus and the Harmony only once I have something playing.

If anyone can confirm my conclusions regarding the apps I'd appreciate it - it'll save me a bunch of time continuing to screw around with it.
So, your Harmony 650 should absolutely control your K8500 as mine does.... However, I had to go into the set up of the remote and assign the "cursor" buttons to the K8500. You can also hit the "device"button on the 650 and choose the K8500 and it will give you full control...

Is anyone else having trouble with the Netflix app on this player? Specifically, when I try to rewind certain content (I think it's mostly 4K content) it'll go to a black screen and it won't recover unless I restart the device (power off and back on). It'll happen if I pause occasionally as well. I think this only happens in Netflix so it would seem like the app is to blame, but I am really not entirely sure of that. I've been mostly watching Netflix on this device lately, so it may just be that I'm in there more often. I don't see anyone else complaining, unless I've missed it. Just seeing if I am the only one. Many thanks!

Edit: I should have included my connection stream...my k8500 is plugged into my Sony receiver which connects to the TV. This kind of seems like an HDMI issue since it looks like the TV just stops getting the signal, i.e., restarting either the TV or the Blu Ray player fixes the issue, but it only seems to be a problem with Netflix...no other apps are having this kind of trouble. Netflix on other devices seems to work fine too (e.g., from the Xbox or AppleTV). So, anyway, just trying to narrow it down and see if anyone on this owner's thread has experienced anything similar.

Edit 2: Just in case anyone else runs into this issue...with the HDMI stream split up so that HDMI 1 from the K8500 is connected directly to the TV for video and HDMI2 is connected to the AVR for audio, the issue is resolved. I can pause, rewind, etc. 4K content in the Netflix app. It's strange that this is only required for Netflix...something weird going on there. I guess a future app update might fix that. Anyway, thanks to all who responded to this. I have a workaround in this configuration (although it does result in an extra cable to the TV, which kind of blows).

my copy of Goodfellas made a grinding noise on the k8500. I have 36 4k blu rays and the thing is whisper quiet....stopped it and put it in the xbox and it started to skip frames then slowed way down...def a disc problem...best buy let me return it.

Thanks to both of you who responded.
I did notice The Sting on Blu Ray will play full screen, so I understand what you're saying about source ratio.

I'm bummed. I don't mind at all what was cut from, as an example, Casino Royale, on Blu Ray by going to full screen on my Sony Blu Ray player. Even on my 65" 950B, I prefer not watching letterbox.

Oh well, thanks again.

Get yourselves a white eraser, and use it to smooth down the rough edges on the BDs.
Just don't put your greasy thumb prints on the disc when doing so.
Finger through the hole, and another on the outer edge. See if that quiets down your noisy discs.

JK. But you are missing out. I just watched the Hateful Eight, which is 2.76:1 and had black bars like you ain't never seen... and it was glorious! (I just wish Quentin had decided to not do the final 3/4ths of the film in a single room and not show more of that beautiful Wyoming scenery in 70mm scored by Morricone).

The Oppo 203 plays DTS:X fine from media files, no restriction there. It plays Multi Channel PCM from TrueHD/Atmos so it isn't quite the same as no audio at all which is how the Samsung rolls.

It'll happen if I pause occasionally as well. I think this only happens in Netflix so it would seem like the app is to blame, but I am really not entirely sure of that. Edit: I should have included my connection stream...my k8500 is plugged into my Sony receiver which connects to the TV. This kind of seems like an HDMI issue since it looks like the TV just stops getting the signal, i.e., restarting either the TV or the Blu Ray player fixes the issue. So, anyway, just trying to narrow it down and see if anyone on this owner's thread has experienced anything similar.
Same problem here. Only happens with Netflix, only 4K content. Zero problems with Amazon, Vudu, or discs of any kind. Also zero problems with any other connected devices (Xbox, cable box, PC), or the TV's built in apps (KS8000). Unfortunately my assumption is that Samsung have largely abandoned this player with the new model due for release and the lack of an HDR update for the Netflix app, so I doubt any kind of fix will be forthcoming.

Just watched a few episodes of the White Rabbit Project last night (4K/24), and had no issue rewinding, pausing, ff at all. I suspect it's a handshake issue if you're running through your AVR (FWIW, I run dual HDMI in order to have separate TV settings from everything else that's non-HDR that goes through my AVR).

@Musician , or anyone else who might know the answer:

Does the AK59-00167A (the alternate remote linked to earlier in this thread) have the ability for 1-touch subtitles activation?

This is a feature I find sorely lacking with the default remote for the K8500, as my huge, fat fingers have a hard time going into the tools menu, activating the subtitle track, closing the tools menu, and then hitting the back button x2 to clear the screen without accidentally stopping playback, switching inputs on my TV, or ejecting the BD.

Thanks.

I am having lip sync issues when playing Amazon prime video from the K8500.
I have main HDMI out to TV and Audio HDMI to Pioneer SC-91.

Is there a way to fix this without affecting other content played? When I play a Blu Ray or UHD disk
I don't notice the voice not matching the lips as much (or not that noticeable anyway).
But really noticeable when playing content from Amazon prime.

Also, I noticed even 5.1 content audio is only being played in stereo. I have SC-91 set on Auto surround which
normally works just fine (works when playing disks).

Thanks for suggestions. Matt

Ok thanks. I only use the K8500 for streaming Amazon since my 2016 Vizio M-Series does not have Amazon on TV.
Just thought it would save a couple steps to have it on main screen. oh well.

I just tried the AK59-00104R and it has a dedicated subtitle button just under the button for the number 7. Pressing it during the playback of a Rocky Mountain Express launched a subtitle menu and then I had to toggle down to the subtitles I wanted and pressed enter to select. All of these button presses much easier with older remote.

OK, thanks. At least it's good to know I'm not the only one. And it helps to narrow down where the fault lies. Thanks again for responding.

@poppagene beat me to the punch (I was too busy taking pictures).

Likewise my AK59-00167A has a dedicated Subtitle button on the bottom row as pictured in the attached thumbnail. I have never used it before so I tested it out. If you are OK with 2 button presses (at least in the case of The Martian) the Subtitles button defaults to English and requires a press of the Enter key following the language selection.

Easy, breezy and with the right movie it could be sleazy!
