Thanks guys, I am gonna use the warranty and Samsung are picking it up tomorrow to give it a once over and repair any issues - would rather play it safe than have a faulty unit.

1.) Can this Blu-ray player play 4K HDR videos from the YouTube app? My 2015 Samsung tv's app unfortunately will not play them.
No, only the 2016+ Sammy TVs and the Chromecast Ultra do this (only 4K is supported by this player's YT app).
2.) Should I set the resolution to 2160P and allow the Blu-ray player to handle all of the upscaling for non native 4K content? Other option would be to set the Blu-ray player to 1080P when watching standard Blu-rays and allow the tv to upscale to 4K.
You can use BDWise in the player to play disks at their native resolution automatically, although it is recommended to be sure to turn BDWise OFF in your TV (under MENU>>SYSTEM>>GENERAL)
3.) When watching standard Blu-rays (1080P), should I turn the HDMI UHD Color setting on my tv for my Blu-ray players source input back to off? The 2015 Samsung tvs don't automatically detect the source input and adjust.
This is the very reason I use my old BRP on a separate HDMI input for HD BRs; besides this setting, there are a few others that need to be changed for HDR (i.e. Gamma needs bumped up 2 ticks from your normal setting, I use SMART LED on High for HDR, and optionally Dynamic Range could be set differently)

Galonzo,

Thanks for your response and input!!

1.) Understood about the YouTube app.

2.) I didn't like the BD Wise settings and prefer to use a different mode. With that being said, what would you recommend in regards to the BR player vs. the tv doing the upscaling? I would assume the BR player would do better considering that is what it's designed for, right?

3.) I don't have an old standar BR player so I'll be using this for all types of BRs. Considering this, your comments tell me I would need to turn UHD HDMI Color off on my tv for the BR players source when watching a standard BR, correct?

Thanks again for all the help!

It's not just an EDID glitch, the picture looks awful (crushed blacks) unless I leave the projector set to "PC" or "Auto" mode.
Folks - It was great to see this. It exactly explains what happened with my set-up a few weeks back. I replaced my 2015 Samsung (65JU6500) with a new Sony 940E. The HDMI length to my Denon 4200W was 25 feet. To accommodate the Sony, we needed a 33 foot HDMI cable. UHD videos played fine on my 8500 ... but, after the installers left, I noticed 'snow'. Unfortunately with the Sammy, the only Y:CbCR option is 4:4:4, so I thought that was the cause. Then, the snow went away when I switched off Deep Color! Everything works fine now, but when I switch out my Epson 5030 PJ for a 4K projector, I will be sure to have a 18 gb 'pipe'.

This setting is the passthrough setting when available, and you are likely seeing the TV automatically switching picture modes for BD Wise, which needs to be defeated initially by turning it off in the TV (like I described) and making sure Movie is selected (or whichever mode you were using, Movie is the most accurate "out of the box"). Your more expensive TV was actually more so designed to upconvert any and every non-UHD video signal to fill all 3840x2160 pixels of its panel; that said, depending on your settings, it can be close, so test out a few HD BRs and see what you think.
3.) I don't have an old standar BR player so I'll be using this for all types of BRs. Considering this, your comments tell me I would need to turn UHD HDMI Color off on my tv for the BR players source when watching a standard BR, correct?
This setting has less of an effect (if any at all) on HD BR than the other settings I mentioned that need adjusting for HDR.

Thanks again for all the help!

Since you have a 2015 Samsung model you can turn BD Wise ON in the player settings and leave it OFF in the TV settings (where I have mine set to the Movie picture mode) and this will automatically output 1080p when it detects a standard blu-ray and 2160p when it detects a UHD disc and eliminate you having to remember to switch back and forth.

As you can see by the following post, the BD Wise setting on the K8500 provides the best setting when connected to a pre-2016 Samsung TV model following by Standard and then User set to all zeros...

For those that are interested, the K8500 is the only UHD BluRay player that can play 4K60p files from the USB input. I've tried the new Sony, Panasonic (I'm convinced this is the same player as the Philips) and the Philips, and only the Samsung plays these files without stutter.

I had no issues playing 2160P60 files with my k8500 or my Sony x800. And actually my Sony played more of my 2160p files than the k8500 did. Although the k8500 played more audio formats from the files than the x800 did.

I've had no luck with smooth 4K60p playback on any other player on both my B6 OLED & Sony 940c. The Sony player played 4K60p files created by my Panasonic GH5 via the USB input, but played them with the same stutter that the Philips & Panasonic did. In fact, even the new Samsung, although playing these files back better than the other non-Samsung players, had some stutter after playing 10 or so files consecutively. This was not true with the original Samsung UHD player. So even in the new Samsung, something has changed as it relates to USB playback.

BTW, these are .mov files recorded by the GH5 at 4K60p.

I was just using demonstration files I got off of the Internet. I only had a few that were 2160P60. Most of the ones I have are 2160P30 or 2160P24.

So I just purchased this player to use on my 65" Samsung JU7100, and immediately, I noticed the colors are very washed and the screen is dim. I'm aware that there are settings that have to be set in order to get everything going properly, but I'd like to know if anyone has a sort of checklist of things to check for proper UHD and HDR display.

Thanks!

You don't say if you are playing a UHD HDR disk. If not, put one in the player and I suggest the following:

1) If your receiver is current and will handle hdmi 2.0a and HDCP 2.2, you can pass through the video to the JU7100. Otherwise send video to Samsung and audio to receiver.
2) Use following settings on the display: Use Movie mode and ensure HDMI UHD color for the applicable input port is "on". Set Smart LED to "high". Set Dynamic Contrast to "med" or "high". Color Space on "auto". Finally, adjust gamma upware "2 clicks" (i.e., if normally on 0, adjust to +2).

For those of y'all with Samsung displays, what do you set the dynamic contrast to?

I love the way high makes the colors pop but medium seems to keep the flesh tones more accurate... What's y'alls thoughts? Thanks

On my JS9500, Low to OFF (mostly OFF), on my HU9000, usually Medium to Low; so it really depends on which model you have. In my experience, High will clip details on both of my Sammy TVs.

Samsung UBD-K8500 vs UBD-KM85c?

The 85c costs a little more ($199 Amazon) but they both do 3D, which I need for my LG OLED65E6P TV. What's the difference between them, I can't tell from the website? Neither do DolbyVision I don't think. Thanks in advance.

Curious...

If anyone else has experienced this...go to play a UHD movie and the player reports that the TV (KS8000) is not UHD capable, and that the movie will play in 1080p. Has happened twice this week on the last 2 UHD movies I have watched (Patriots Day and Hidden Figures). Stopping the movie, ejecting the disk and restarting the movie solves the issue. I suspect it is a HDMI handshake thing. Any thoughts?

HDMI 1 > OCB HDMI 3, HDMI 2 > AVR and set to 2160p. HDMI and One Connect cables are firmly seated. HDMI cable is a Monster Black Platinum (got it for $28 @ BB before anyone shoots me, lol).

Hi all,
I'm trying to play mkv files (Dolby Atmos) on the UBD-k8500 via usb, however I can't get any audio.
its says the TrueHD isn't supported. Video works on some mkv files.

I was under the impression this player could handle DD+/TrueHD/Atmos 7.1 etc?

I want to try and listen to 'true' atmos clips.

Agreed; if you "Search This Thread" for "Monster", you'll find nothing but issues with those cables (even the $200, 35' Monster Cables UltraHD Black Platinum failed when tested by Sound & Vision)

I just bought the sams club version of this player. 4k disc works and is beautiful. Netflix and Amazon 4k work as well. I am using in with an Epson 5040ub projector. When I play a 3d bluray though it blanks out. I can hear the audio but no video. My projector supports 3d because I can use my older Sony bop-s6200 to play 3D using everything else the same. Is there a known issue. I am using hdmi to projector directly and second hdmi to connect to my receiver for audio.

Try turning on your display first, then your player. It is an hdmi handshake issue. I have monoprice certified premium cables along with some other brands. Happens no matter what cable is installed.

Question. I have this uhd blu ray player. Attached to a samsung k950 soundbar. All. Attached to a non 4k pannasonic 65 zt60 tv its a great tv not wanting to part with yet. I reall like and look for atmos blu rays. When only available in uhd with atmos i have purcased them and the samsung down converts them to 1080 beautifullly. My question is are there any streaming servicees that has 4k with atmos that would do the same so i can play the atmos signal (down convert to 1080p) thanks for any help

I'm gonna say no for now. The only service is Vudu I believe and u need tv capable of of 4K to even access it. Plus it's only LG 4K only right now! Anyone on here correct me if I'm wrong?

Weird issue with my UBD-K8500

So recently got Ice Age: 5 Movie Blu-Ray Collection. (1 of the 5 movies) Continental Drift, when I try to play it makes a really loud almost grinding noise when I put it in the drive. After about 20 seconds the player says it can't read the disc.

Now the interesting thing is, the disk works on my Samsung J7500 Blu-Ray, My Xbox One and my PC drive. So I don't think its a bad disc, though I don't have this issue with any other movies on the player. Any ideas?
