Agreed!

Yes there is a sequence you should power you stuff up. It should always be your display or audio (AVR) first and then your bd player.
You could also try a HDMI reset, and then always used the recommended power on order:

Nicked from this post
Quote:
HDMI HDCP reset
With all devices powered on, remove the two HDMI cables at both ends from the source device to the AVR and from the AVR to the TV.
Power off all devices and disconnect power cables to all devices.
Wait 10-15 minutes.
Reconnect HDMI and power cables to all devices.

Power on the devices in this order ... TV, wait a few secs, AVR, wait a few secs, and then source device (although this is the generally recommended order, in some instances, you may have better luck powering on the AVR first and then the TV, then the source last ... bottom line if it's still not working, try a different power on sequence).

Samsung's technical support is telling me that is it the incompatibility of the TV (10-bit) and the player (8-bit). What does that even mean? Isn't K8500 able to detect this automatically?

Please help me!

Not sure if you've done this or if this is even a solution to your problem, but did you enable deep color/HDR on the HDMI port?

To get HDR you will often need to manually set up the TV from the on-screen menu. Typically you need to manually set the HDMI port (i.e. HDMI1), that PS4 Pro is connected to, to expect a HDR video signal. Depending on your TV brand look for:

Panasonic: Activate ”HDMI HDR Setting”

2nd Addendum:

Now finding my issue was NOT with the UBD-K8500, but with my TV system, having Amazon, through it's third party vendor, to return the unit, and recharge my CC. It was great of them to give me the full refund, but not fair when there was actually nothing wrong with the unit.

Note: UBD-M9500 does look better, but does NOT do 3D. So, I get the M9500, wife gets the K8500 since she's the one that mostly watches the 3D.

Addendum: Vendor says they may have re-sold it as an open box item.

Addendum 2: It helps if the HDMI Inputs are first calibrated with the HDR Patterns Blu-ray! Unfortunately on the HU9000 + SEK-3500U, we've run into a bug re the HDR calibrating.

Addendum 3: It appears the SEK-3500U and the JS Series OCBs have an issue with 2 settings for SDR and HDR. Work in progress.

If you use the method 2 connections shown in the first post. HDMI 1 to the TV and HDMI 2 to the receiver, can this player not output Atmos over this connection? Although I’m playing an Atmos disk and have bitstream uncompressed selected, my receiver, an Onkyo RZ900, is only displaying it’s receiving a PCM track. Over optical it shows it’s receiving a 6.1 DTS track.

If I use the method 1 connection, HDMI 1 to my receiver I get the Atmos track.

# 1 Not knowing Onkyo, but my Yamaha, there were some settings that had to be changed in my unit.
# 2 It's my understanding, if the Dolby Atmos speakers are not detected being connected, it won't switch to Dolby Atmos ?

It all depends on what your TV is. We had a case recently with someone's TV which was messing up the HDMI handshake because the TV lied about which sound formats it could handle. In these circumstances, both HDMI outputs from this player drop down to the lowest common format that both TV and AVR can handle. (This is because inside this player it's like a HDMI splitter from a single HDMI output). Search/read up the thread a few weeks ago for more info.

edit: it's HERE .

You would think if they created an HDMI port just for audio, that when set, in the settings to use that port, it would only look to that port and ignore the video output port. So if that’s how it works it seems like that designer should be bagging groceries.

Hi, new to this thread. Just got the unit at Sam's club. For some reason when I play content using an external drive, the audio and pic are out of sync and nothing I do with the lip sync option on the player, vizio t.v. or my Yamaha receiver helps as they all start from zero and it looks as I have to move the audio to negative below zero to get it sync. Is there a problem with the player or my settings are wrong? Movies from the bd discs are fine. Thanks in advanced.

My unit's HDMI 1 is connected to the LG OLED B6 (cannot handle Atmos). HDMI 2 is connected to a Denon receiver (supports Atmos and DTS:X)

Watched several 4K BR discs. Receiver detected Atmos or DTS:X without any issues.

Any Closed Captioning issues across disc formats with this player? BD Frozen works fine. Planet Earth and Jessie Stone DVD doesn't. Search hints? " UBD-K8500 closed captioning issues" and similar doesn't work

I've been following this thread since the beginning, and I can't recall anything about this; that said, we're going on 2 years now, so I could be wrong. It's usually best to only search by one, distinct word at a time to get any relevant posts, maybe try just "caption"?

Thanks to both @galonzo and @papage ne. I tried a few single word searches but the threads are so long it would take hours to find anything. I'm researching for my BIL. He can't get CC on any DVD. I'll take a few DVD's to him I know work on mine and see what happens. I've got a feeling it's his player.

HI all and one! At the risk of sounding techno illiterate, i am posting this question to clarify a couple of basics!
I have a Samsung ks7000. I would like to add a Samsung UBDK8500 so i can watch movies. I would also like to add something like a Yamaha ysp2500 for sound.

Is there anything i need to consider? will this combination work? I know the tv already gives You Tube and Amazon HDR, so that is covered. I don't need a receiver etc do I?

Any input on what i have not considered very much welcomed!

The Samsung TV and UHD bluray will work great together - as both Samsung! You don't need a receiver but to enjoy HD sound such as DTS HD MA and Dolby TrueHD from the disks you would - plus appropriate speakers. The TV speakers are not great

HI there and thankyou for your reply! When you say the speakers are not that great, do you mean the Yamaha soundbar i quoted? Im aware this is no replacement for 5.1, but the room i am installing in is only 3.2m by 3 m area. Can you recommend a soundbar to me? im mainly interested in a clean hassle free install taht willl give me decent enough sound impact for the odd hdr 4k video i may watch in my downtime.

Sorry thought the Yamaha you mentioned was a receiver! I have a Yamaha AVR and have no knowledge of soundbars as never owned one. Hopefully someone here may be able to help.

You are right, searching AVS Forum can get a little overwhelming at times so here is a trick I often use.

I use Google and include the word AVSForum in my search criteria coupled with the keywords of the topic I am looking for.

For example, in your case I searched for "closed captioning issue avsforum k8500" which returned the most popular results as shown below...

It also provides the option to view 'More results from www.avsforum.com' and when you click on that it provides a list of all the results and enough text that you can rule in those that are worth a further read.

Well @Musician and @Peja , some "tricks of the trade" are to use "AND" (all caps) in-between search terms to get pages that absolutely contain both terms; and to get right to the results, use "site:www.example.com" to search within a site. So try:

closed AND caption AND k8500 site:avsforum.com

and see what comes up

Well, here's my problem with my K8500. Sent it off (only player and power cord like they requested) to 220-Elecrtonics to make it REGION FREE. Just got it back, and tried my first 6 REGION B 3D BD discs...only two played.

When I call them on Monday, I hope there is an easy fix from my side and not a screw up on their side. A week to and a week back from them I don't want to go through again.

...finally retired and spending time in my dedicated HT!!!

The player is already region free. You shouldn't have had to send it in. The only region locked players I know of are Sony's.

Pretty sure this only applies to 4k discs. 1080p Blu-ray disks are still region locked.

Nope. I'm in Canada which is region 1, and I have Planet Earth on Bluray from the UK which is region 2 or whatever it is, wouldn't play in my PS3 but on my K8500, it plays no problem

BRs can be region free as well. The specific one you mention (Planet Earth series) is usually region free. You’d need a region locked BR to prove your case.

Yes.
  • For DVDs, they will only play if they match your region, or they are authored as "region free". Most DVDs are not.
  • For Blu-Rays, they will only play if they match your region, or they are authored as "region free". Most Blu-Rays are not.
  • For 4K Blu-Rays, they will only play if they match your region, or they are authored as "region free". All 4K Blu-Rays, so far, are.

NB: Because so many 4K discs are "bare bones" discs with all of the extras, documentaries, behind-the-scenes, storyboards, etc - all that great rich content - is on the accompanying region-locked Blu-ray, it means that in practice, it's a region-locked format regardless because you have to make sure you buy the right region-locked Blu-ray disc in the box with it, and you can't just import the cheapest 4K version you can find! Otherwise you can't play half the content!

So don't let anyone tell you that 4K Blu-Ray is a fully unlocked format. It is not, and it will not be so until all that extra content is also unlocked.

This is simply not a region-free player. None of my region 1 DVDs work. You have to have it modified.

I can tell you, Planet Earth is NOT region free. It will not play in my PS3, but it will play in region free players.

You are mistaken. The Sammy K8500 has to be modified to be REGION FREE and is only sold, that I'm aware of, by 200-Electronics in the USA.

BHPHOTOVIDEO in NYC carries “reion-free” versions of both the UBD-K8500 and its successor, the UBD-M9500.
