Whenever I play something from a USB stick, it always defaults to subtitles on. I can turn them off manually, but it's a pain to do it every time. Is there any way to set the default subtitle setting to off, esp. for USB files?
Thanks

Same goes for the Video Paks developed for the Samsung TV’s back in 2014 before 4K material became readily available.

Kind of off-putting having our A/V equipment thinking we are hard of hearing. It’s bad enough putting up with a wife who feels the same way!!!

Why is it that on Samsung UBD K8500 I have to increase the volume on my receiver so it can match My Playstation 3 volume.

Or a couple of other ways to look at it (click links below)...

PS3 volume much quieter when watching dvd/blu-ray compared to music

...or somebody with the total opposite issue...

PS3 volume too loud, in particular XMB

If your A/V Receiver allows, many provide a setting to ‘tame’ each HDMI input accordingly so they all sound relatively the same.

So maybe it's your receiver and not the player. My 2017 Denon has no issues with this player. All levels on all sources are perfect.

AAC 7.1

I have quite a few media files (in mkv containers) that have the audio encoded as AAC 7.1. My current uhd player (sony) cannot process them. I'd be sending them to my receiver via the 'audio only' hdmi port. Does anyone know if the k8500 can process these? Below is a typical audio profile as reported by mediainfo.

Audio
ID : 2
Format : AAC
Format/Info : Advanced Audio Codec
Format profile : LC
Codec ID : A_AAC

Compression mode : Lossy

The person that was selling this player was willing to refund me if it couldn't play these files. I was so pleased to find that yes, it can find my 4 TB usb 3.0 drives and ... it plays these rips flawlessly!

Who's responsible for the remote though ... I mean I know I have big hands but ... it seems like it was designed for a 5 year old. Oh well ... amazon to the rescue.

Glad you got it sorted. I agree about the remote; it's well below the caliber of the UBD-K8500. I was replacing a Samsung BluRay player and found it's remote works just fine on this one..

Yes, 4k is a very recent thing for me so ... I'm very happy to find a device that will play (and upscale) my 1080p movie collection without much fuss. I guess I'll ditch the Sony X800 (I should have known better than to buy Sony). Since I bought it 2nd hand for a good price, I should be able to get my money back.

Thinking of the remote, I ordered this one:

https://www.amazon.ca/DEHA-BluRay-Co...3597959&sr=8-5

Since I use a projector in a dark room, the backlight feature will be nice and the buttons seem more widely spaced. I'm hoping the subtitle button works because (as an earlier post mentions) they come on by default and it's a bit of a fuss to turn them off with the standard remote.

Don't know why your subtitles come on by default, it might be a option in the Setup menu that you can change? Not that way on mine? Anyway, I have the same remote and the Subtitle button will allow you to scroll thru the subtitle options from OFF and thru whatever languages are available

I also had a Sony X800M2 but returned it. It's a nice player, built like a tank and very quiet running BUT, lots of little details I hated. Mainly it didn't offer Dolby Digtial Plus sound for Netflix and few other things that drove me nuts. My little Sammy was better for just day to day use.
Enjoy

Ok ... good to know about the subtitle button ... that will be handy. I haven't found an option in Setup to default them to off (I'm talking here about media files played through the usb port).

Sony! - long history of restricted codec support ... way back in the day I was an early buyer of the PS3 based on their hype of it being a universal media player ... only to find it wouldn't play MKVs ... I don't think to this day they have released an update to rectify this. The X800 does manage mkv containers but it can't handle AAC 7.1 and a lot of encodes use this.

Early days but, apart from the hard-to-use remote, I'm very happy with the K8500. I just won another one.

OK, well good luck as all bets are off with the files>usb? I've only tested it using BD discs where it works just fine.

I haven't tried very many BD discs (I only have 1 ultra ... The Martian EE) but yes ... they play very well and the subtitles are off by default. Streaming isn't really a viable option for me - I'm in the back woods of Canada with slow internet. The bulk of my movie collection is 1080p or 2160p reasonable quality HEVC rips (a lot have the audio encoded AAC 7.1). I know the K8500 wasn't primarily designed to be a universal media player but so far it's playing (and upscaling) everything I throw at it. It's recognizing a wide variety of usb devices and will play these files from burned data BD-Rs. The 'audio only' hdmi port feeds my non-4k receiver perfectly. Gotta like that

Looking at your signature ... are you running 5.2.4 audio and...how do you like it? I've been thinking about upgrading my receiver to something that will pass 4K HDR video and that would seem like an ideal time to look into Atmos. Right now, I'm running 7.1 audio.

you’d be better served with a NAS or dedicated HTPC or Android Box like Nvidia Shield that you can watch 4K content AND lossless audio, running through the Sammy 4K player isn’t ideal. As I’m a Canadian too, I know the Black Friday deals are coming up and places like Canada Computers and Best Buy usually have great deals on HTPCs or Nvidia Shield. I picked up an Nvidia Shield on 2018s Boxing Day and made a big difference for watching and listening to 4K MKVs.

Yes I'm running a 5.2.4 setup and I love it. Many of the Atmos and DTS-X movie tracks do a great job of putting you into the scenes with overhead mixing. Also the overheads add much with the use of upmixing from both the mentioned codexs and Auro 3D if your new receiver supports it. I thought my upgrade to the immersive pre/pro and speakers well worth the cost.

Those sound like very good ideas for the future. The drawback they have for me in the here and now is that they lack an 'audio only' hdmi out. My current AVR will not pass 4K or HDR. The 'audio only' out of the K8500 (and the X800) is a really big deal to me. I think the next upgrade for me should be a more modern receiver. It'll have to wait a bit though ... my funding for such things has to recover from buying the 4K projector ... that was a big hit to my funds ... no regrets though, it's my 1st venture into 4k and I can't imagine ever going back.

Now if Samsung could just add Disney + to the app store, we would be golden. However since they don't make this model anymore, doubt we will see upgrades of any sort.

Not only do they not make this model, they don't make the next model any more either, which was the last Blu-Ray player Samsung ever made before they stopped making ANY blu-ray players.

Even mentioning the idea that there would be any new apps built for a long-dead Blu-ray player platform, which wasn't even the "most current" Blu-ray player Samsung platform, is reaching

That's a shame, I really like my little 8500. I even recently purchased a pricey Sony which had many good features, heavy and very quiet-fast disc loading and spinning, etc. But there was a number of features that really bothered me, specially the fact that they don't offer Dolby Plus sound from the Netflix app. Used it for a few weeks but in the end returned it to BestBuy, nice people, no argument on returns. So I'll stick with my slightly clunky Sammy as long as it keeps running, handles all the codex I'm interested for now.

BTW, I took a look at CNET and they claimed one of the reasons Samsung dropped BD players was that they had painted themself's into a corner with their HDR+ and refusing to support DolbyVision. ITYS

"One of the reasons for pulling out could be that the existing 4K players' format support has lagged behind the rest of the industry. For example, instead of supporting Dolby Vision, Samsung created its own version of HDR10, called HDR10+, which was designed for use in streaming and physical media."

Any 2016 Samsungs, and forward, have the Disney + App. (ie. My KS9800 has it plus the Apple as well).
My wife's HU7250 + SEK-3500U did not. I was all set to buy the wife a new set when my son piped in, use the Amazon Fire Stick - voila, Disney +! Saved me a few hundred dollars!

My KS8000 has it, I just hate that the ARC is limited to Dolby 2.0, reason I was hoping the K8500 would atleast get it so maybe Dolby Atmos would stream.

Yep, great solution. Starting tomorrow 4K fire sticks will be on sale for half price. Very convenient for travel!

Canada Amazon is holding the price at full retail, I assume, until the actual Black Friday.

Yep, same in the US. Looks like after the tech sites posted about the sale starting on 11/22 they held back some items. Will be a great deal once the price drops.

Got one here in the UK for £30 reduced on Friday. Didn't get it for Disney+ as we don't see that over here until end of March. Got so I can enjoy BBC UHD on iPlayer. Just cut the cord and the Virgin Media Cable box (TiVo) supported HLG for iPlayer but we all know this TV doesn't support HLG on native apps!

ARC supports up to 5.1 but not 5.1+ that's needed for lossy Atmos

Just as well, Airmiles Bonus + is only for Nov 29 to Dec 2 for spending $200 on Amazon. Guess I'd better look for some other items as well as the 4K Fire Stick.

Please stick to discussion of the player. Take deal's/sales talk to the designated deal's area.
