Is there an iOS app that works with the player as a remote? My remote no longer works.

It appears to do HDR10/UHD and 3D. I want to get a Sony X800M2 when I get a new TV that supports DV, but then I'd still want to keep the LG one with this TV. Will I use 3D again? Maybe not. Maybe once or twice. But if the LG player is decent at everything else (DVD, BD, UHD-BD) then why not?

Nope. The closest thing would be a Harmony remote. It has an iOS app that you can control things with.

I've personally not used it. But i do use a Harmony 750 which is just a universal remote and it works great.

BB carries the 420. If you get a Sony TV, that LG player will not support DV on a Sony display. If you want DV get the Sony or the Panasonic 820.

The Panasonic does *not* have DV, it has HD10 and HDR10+. That being said, it's cheaper than the LG, has Wi-Fi if for some reason I ever need it, and it supports HDR10 and HDR10+ so it's probably still the better buy. I am planning on keeping it with the Samsung TV. I am not looking to buy a Sony TV (even though they are very nice), just the Sony UHD BD player for a Vizio or TCL with HDR10/DV. The Panasonic is a nice looking player too, it's small and pretty square.

Correct. The 420 does not support DV. For a non DV display, like a Samsung, then it is probably the best player out there with its tone-mapping. The LG will work fine down the road with the Vizio or TCL. I brought up the 820 and Sony players because you said DV in the future. Trying to save you some heartbreak like others have found out when they tried to use the LG players with a Sony display.

I'm happy with the UB420, I spent several hours last night removing excess cabling from my setup, I tested my Roku through my AVR yet again, and it still won't do 2160p60 HDR through the Denon X3400H, I adjusted levels for different inputs on the Denon, as HDMI, Optical (from Roku) and Spotify were all different levels, added another Ethernet switch so that I could hardwire everything, and did a few other improvements. I haven't had a chance to watch anything more than a couple minutes of Sicario on the UB420, but so far so good.

When I get a new TCL or Vizio TV, I am planning on getting the Sony X800M2 and keeping the UB420 with the Samsung TV, so that both TVs have an optical disc player. I was looking at the LG player for this TV, not the future new TV. I'd probably move most movie watching to the new TV, but I'd like to be able to handle any type of disc (UHD BD, BD, DVD) on the secondary TV as well.

One night this week I'm going to watch a movie or two to see how the UB420 is. Either that or one of the BBC documentary series that I have on disc.

All players can. The only thing a player has to be able to do is bitstream audio.

Not sure where you heard that from, but like Teachsac said, all UHD 4K players can.

As long as your AVR can play Atmos/DTS:X and you have the player set to bitstream, you’ll get Atmos sound.

Here is an independent review

The UBD-K8500 has built-in decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. It's set by default to use its internal decoders and send PCM to your AV receiver, but you can easily change this setting to bitstream output if you want your receiver to handle the decoding. If you've got a Dolby Atmos setup, you need to set the player for bitstream audio output and let your AV receiver handle the Atmos decoding.

Thanks guys for the information
I have a 2019 Samsung Q80 QLED, UBD-K8500 player, and the Samsung Harmon Kardon Q80 soundbar

Thinking of keeping my cable box, Xbox one x, and Nintendo switch plugged into the hdmi ports on my TV. Then plug soundbar into HDMI port 4(ARC) of my tv. Then plug 4K Blu-ray player into soundbar hdmi input

I’m thinking this way my existing picture settings on my tv hdmi port 4 will remain for my 4K blu day player and I will get the best picture/video experience for discs. I will change my setting on 4K player to Bitstream to get the best uncompressed audio. Will the player default to the best audio track possible depending on what the movie offers (Atmos/DTS/DD?)

As for my other 3 sources, my tv doesn’t have eARC so it’ll passthrough compressed audio I believe only in Dolby Digital Plus to my soundbar I believe?

The player will not always default to the best track; that's up to the way the disc is formatted by the production company. For a while, Disney was not selecting Atmos as its default track but rather an alternate lossless track on the disc. I got in the habit of always checking the setup before playing a disc just to make sure Atmos was selected if it was present on the disc.

Same here, always check what's available on the disc after the main feature starts. Many times it will chose the 7.1 track over Atmos for default. I've also seen at other times the startup will make an error and not be giving you the best choice for your system. I always push the "Audio" button on the ak59-00172a upgraded remote I purchased to check whats on the disc. Not sure how to do the same on the POS remote that came with the player.

Aha, I can help here! I still have the POS remote that came with it, and use it (and hate it). I can also use my Denon remote to control everything except there's no "eject"/"close the tray" button mapped, not even a secret "hold something pressed" combo, which I find intensly annoying.

Anyway, on the POS original Samsung remote, you can either press the ". Info -123" button, and then press ok to show the Tools menu, or the "Tools" button directly.

This gives you the Tools menu on right side of the screen:
Play from the beginning
Select Scene
Repeat Mode
Picture Mode
Audio
etc

Then select Audio to see the soundtracks which are available in the Title of the disc currently being played.

It sounds, from what you're saying, that you have a direct button to the "Audio" sub-menu, is that correct?

Yep. All the full size Samsung BluRay remotes do. Go to ebay and search for "samsung blu ray player remote".
You'll get bunches of them pop up for way under $10. Ditch that POS factory remote for something better. They even have separate fast forward/back and chapter forward/back buttons.
Any Samsung player remote will work.

It would be a Panasonic dp-ub820/824 or its replacement next year, if there is one. It's annoying that it wasn't replaced this year, and now what'll happen is the the day I buy one they'll probably announce a newer better model. But I'd first need to offload^H^H^H^H^HYsell this one.

OK, thanks.
I was just curious. Unless it breaks I'll be keeping my Sammy until I buy a new TV with things like DolbyVision, HDR10+, etc. I had a Sony X800M2 here for a bit but returned it. A beautiful player mechanically, smooth and quiet, but it had some quirks that I didn't like. Like the E-Bunny my Samsung just keep going and going. LOL

Quick question: is there any way to change subtitles brightness on this player? For HDR movies they are output at maximum brightness and they are dazzling. Worse, on my edge-lit Samsung KS8000 they are so bright they cause blooming. I’ve looked all over the place and I can’t find any option on either the player or the TV to change the default appearance of the subtitles.
