You should post this info as a sticky at the beginning of the thread. This is concise info that could answer questions and solve problems quickly.

All this information should probably be sticked in the lcd and oled forums. This information is too scattered and there will be lots of people asking the same questions. Might be more helpful for them to have something to go right too.

Anyone knows how to change the region of the app store or Smarthub in K8500?

It seems 'FF 2 8 9 Rew' does not work.

Thanks Guys. Changed Picture setting to User on K8500, didn't even know this option existed. Looks similar to Standard as other user posted. But for peace of mind im leaving it on User.

What about the other picture settings on the K8500? HDMI Deep color and color format? I have those in Auto.

One other thing, I changed the HDMI port on the 65x850c to Enhanced and the picture quality changed dramatically. Before putting it on Enhanced, the colors were too exaggerated. why was that?

Are any owners using this player with a 1080p JVC projector? If so, do 1080p BDs look any better than the same BDs played by a 1080p player?

Thanks.

Sorry, are you the mod? Or is cj the mod?

I'm not sure what your concerns are regarding the OP's question or the reply from @HockeyoAJB (see attached thumbnail). If it was my follow up post that has you both concerned where I verified that the particular display mentioned in his reply is identified correctly on "the list", then no need to fret as there already is a thread on AVS Forum that covers all the HDR-Capable Displays and post #1 lists them all in one place.

Here's the link: https://www.avsforum.com/forum/editpo...ost&p=41827273

Like it or not, this is AVS Forum where if I got a dollar for every question I answered multiple times I would own a theatre.

Cheers!

So I finally figured out who the mysterious "cj" is referred to in the post above!

But what's the point of responding to @thyname with this suggestion? He is not the Thread Starter. He is probably just as confused as I was in my reply to @Rf13.

And while poking around I also figured out who the moderator of this thread is and also owner of post #1 so you might want to share your ideas with @teachsac who would probably be happy to set up such an arrangement if only he could find a couple of volunteers!

It's worked great with my 850C set. UHD BD titles from the K8500 should look Superb on your 940C.

when I changed the input I was using for the Samsung K8500 to enhanced the 940 TV did not ask me to reboot? Is it supposed to reboot in order to accept the HDMI change to enhanced?

Yes, it should ask about rebooting. Check to see if it reads "enhanced."

I cousldnt get a WD cinema vidity drive to work on my set (in Canada with smart hub set to use apps and DNS set to US), but I'm hoping to try it through the player to access the free HDR movies on the drive.... :/

So have my 940c and 8500. 940c is very black when viewing YouTube 4K but when viewing Exodus it's just dark grey in picture (letterbox bars are black). I've tried changing settings on 940c but not working. Assume it's an issue with 8500. Any thoughts?

No concern or anything against you I just happened to tag your helpful quote. My point was it might be helpful to put it all in one place. I frequent car forums and the common stuff and how tos are sticked in the appropriate forums. I always wondered why avs never did this. Consolidating all of the information about hdmi 2.0, hdcp 2.2, and hdr would help out a lot of people.

No concern taken I was just a little confused.

I hear what you are saying but AVS can't possibly take on what you are after for each and every topic (or I suspect @teachsac would have jumped right on it when I 'mentioned' him in my reply to you).

Suggestion

If you or cj would like to volunteer, here is one approach...

I have volunteered in the past on a thread by creating a Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) post within a thread and from there added a link in my signature and took an active roll monitoring the questions being asked, referring newbies to the FAQ, and adding to the FAQ as the need arose.

Be careful what you wish for though as this can be very time consuming and come with some unpleasent side effects.

Search the Thread

Another suggestion is to search the thread but before anyone complains to me that the search engine sucks... I didn't write it.

I think most of us are going to figure out in a hurry how to set up our UBD-K8500 and move on. I mean lets face a whole lot of the posts have to do with the same thing -- settings for the player and dozens of TV's.

For those that need a little help I prescribe to seek and thee shall find method and offer below my instructions for searching this thread.

________________________________________

How do I perform a search in the UBD-K8500 thread?

If you navigate to the top of the page right below the text "Thread Subscriptions" you will find a search box with a big SEARCH button next to it. This is NOT how to search a thread as the results will return every single hit on the entire AVS Forum website!

While viewing this thread, scroll to the top of the page and directly above the first post on each page you will see a drop down box titled "Search this Thread". Tap the arrow and you can enter your Keyword(s) and press the GO button.

You can also click on "Advanced Search" which allows you to stratify your search by including Keyword(s), along with User Name and Date Range criteria.

Please limit discussion to the Samsung 8500. Please use the search feature to find similar questions and answers before asking the same question. General software discussion not related to playback belongs in the software forum. Please review our staff message in the first post.

I would suggest that for this specific thread, the available software and the player have a rather unique nexus. Discussion of typical blu-ray players can concentrate on the hardware. The software is not really an issue. However, it's hard, if not impossible, to discuss the Samsung 8500 without discussing the software you are showing.

The Samsung 8500 is currently the only UHD player on the market. Whether of not it's going to be successful is probably driven as much or more by the availability/quality of the disks as the quality of the player.

Hello all,

Just curious on what everyone's general take on the Deep Color option on this player is? I was under the assumption to leave it off at all cost but many users are saying leaving it on makes no difference. I'm talking strictly 4K content here.

Thanks guys

Thanks guys

Leave it OFF, it is not needed.

The UHD Blu-ray movies are mastered in 10-bit color.

The player outputs 10-bit color with it OFF. (12-bit if it's ON)

How do you disable HDR on the player?
Thanks.

Samsung needs to update this. The problem is the menu screen of the Samsung is outputting 4K/60 4:4:4 12bit. It's not part of the hdmi spec. The reason it works when inserting a disc is because the player switches to 4K/60 4:2:0 10bit which are what UHD discs are mastered at. When you eject the disc the player still stays in 4K/60 4:2:0 10bit mode and that's why you can then see the Samsungs menu screen. You can buy an HD Fury Integral to get around this, yeah, I know. More money. I'm not confident that Samsung will do anything but, I hope so.

This is the fault of Samsung, not JVC.

I did check it and it does say enhanced. To be honest it may have done a reboot but maybe I just didn't recall it, a little bit of CRS disease(Can't Remember S--t) One thing that I notice when I go into the Tools Menu the picture darkens considerably from its normal brightness status, so much so that sometimes it is hard to see the highlighted item. If I recall it didn't always do this, maybe one of the firmware updates caused this. Is this the way it is supposed to be? I would not think so since it makes it difficult to pick out the highlighted item.

There is no setting in the player to disable HDR. Even if there were an HDR on/off switch, it wouldn't provide the results most people are looking for. The content itself is graded in HDR with the intent that it will be viewed on an HDR display. The disc does not contain an SDR graded version of the movie. This means you have two options...

1) Play the 1080p SDR graded Blu-Ray instead.

2) Use the player's HDR->SDR downconversion capabilities. The player will do its best to convert the HDR content to the capabilities of your display. It knows what your display is capable of based on the EDID your display presents to the player during the HDMI handshake. If your display is not HDR-compatible, the player will automatically downconvert the content to something SDR-like. If you have an HDR-compatible display but would rather watch an SDR-like version of HDR content on your display, you can do so by changing the EDID that your display would normally present to one that emulates a non-HDR-compatible display. This can be done with an EDID management device. Alternatively, if you have a second display that is not HDR-compatible, you could use a more generic HDMI splitter (or, if using an AVR with multiple HDMI outs in the video chain, a second HDMI out from the AVR) to feed the video signal to both displays. With the non-HDR-compatible display in the loop, the player will be forced to downconvert the signal going to both displays, as it can only transmit one signal at a time. Note: if using a Zone 2/3 HDMI out to feed video to the non-HDR-compatible display then you will need to select the same source for both the main and 2nd/3rd zone to force downconversion. If you select different sources then the non-HDR-compatible display will no longer be in the loop and the signal should not be downconverted.

In time, I imagine that both displays and players will have manual settings to enable/disable HDR->SDR downconversion, if enough people request it.
