After having the 203 i'm now going to sit back and wait to see how the Sony X800 pans out. I find nothing else of interest out there as the Panny is overpriced... Have no idea when the final specs on Sony will be available but rumored price may fit well .

Like you I don't care about builtin apps as I use a different device for that stuff. As a standalone unit for just playing BDs and UHD discs I find the 7501 to be excellent. Yes it is slower for loading discs but i'm not going to a "fire" and can deal with the little extra time involved..

Yes my Oppo 203 was so problematic that I asked for RMA for full refund yesterday. I thought that it was having too many problems for such an expensive device and will stick with the 7501 for now. Also looking at Sony to see what it offers.

Question: This is the first time I've seen this on any DVD, BD, etc. player. This morning I popped in an old DVD on the 7501 and the show immediately had subtitles on the bottom of the screen. I went into "Options" and made sure subtitles was "Off" but I continued to see them on the bottom of the screen. After a few tries on the option screen I noticed another section called "Closed Captions" and it was set to "On". Once I turned it "Off" the subtitles went away. I'm confused as to why the 7501 has both a "Subtitles" section and a "Closed Captions" section since I thought the two were the same thing? Why have both sections?

My problem with Sony players (and I've owned a couple) is they won't play some import dvd disks (50 Hz or PAL) and the few I have are important to me. It is a shame all players won't play all formats.

Love my Philips!

We are looking at this player or an XBox One S, mostly due to the fact they are the only UHD BD players that also stream HDR Netflix. Given the XBox is relatively the same price, are there any benefits to this player over the XBox other than the dual HDMI outputs? We would actually utilize the dual outputs since our receiver does not do 4k and we are not replacing it any time soon. Just trying to decide if the HDMI audio out vs having to use the optical out on the XBox is really that big of a deal in a system that only plays DD and DTS 5.1 anyway and if it will make a big enough difference to forego the fact that the XBox is so much more than just a UHD BD player. Will the Philips have noticeably better PQ than the XBox?

They are not the same thing at all, that's why there are 2 different sections, sub-titles are a language different than the spoken language, closed captions are the same as the spoken language.

I guess what confused me is that other BD player vendors use the two terms interchangeably...

I do not have the XBOX but UHD and Blu-Ray players are all very similar in picture quality (I had the Samsung before the 7501 and they were pretty similar but stuck with the 7501 due to HDR Netflix), the real differences are their ability at upscaling regular DVDs which I'm guessing is not a big deal for you. You should be happy with both but personally I would wait for a player that has Dolby Vision as this will be more common in the future.

Does anyone know if this player is capable of 4K/50p playback?

I recently purchased an UHD blu-ray of the opera Le Nozze di Figaro. It turned out to be 4K/50p. I can hear the sound and see menus and subtitles, but no picture. I tried changing all sorts of settings on both the player and the TV (Samsung KS8000) and could not get it to work. I have 30+ UHD blu-rays and haven't had any playback issues before. They are all 4K/24p, though. I do have several other opera blu-rays and they play fine (1080/60p).

The TV manual specifically mentions that it supports 4K/50p, but the Philips only mentions 4K/60p. When I open the Philip's playback info window it does show 50p for both the input and output.

I have the same problem playing one of the UHD I bought that is 4k/50p. I can hear the audio but no picture.
I am using the Philips player with a JVC RS400.

I posted the question on a different forum and someone with an OPPO player was able to watch the opera I had issues with. After what you mentioned, I'm pretty sure the Philips player does not support 4K/50p. That's a shame. It's a very good player for the price otherwise.

I'm very happy with this player so far and I paid $299 for it when it was first released. The price has now dropped to $199. I haven't tested any other players, so it would be unfair for me to judge how it stacks up against them, but I can tell you it is easy to use, has a good amount of features, compact size, UHD and standard blu-rays look great, and apart from not being able to play a 4K/50p disc (something that you shouldn't encounter with any mainstream U.S. release), I have no complaints.

I think it has a lot less issues with UHD discs than the Oppo 203 had which I returned. The only thing I like better about the Samsung UHD player is that is has a lot more apps but if you're not interesting in the apps, it's the perfect player.

My Philips 4k player has been acting erratic recently. It's only happened with The Revenant 4K movie.....but it causes the player to just lock and freeze. After watching for a bit of time and searching through scenes, the "search" screen won't disappear and will be a "ghost" on the screen. And, all the controls will be locked. I'll have to unplug the player to reset it.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I've had mine for a while now and for the price it is hard to beat. While it lacks some of the bells and whistles some of the other UHD players it does what it's supposed to do. It would be nice if it came with Amazon Prime, but that's really my only complaint.

Display - LG OLED
Receiver - Denon
Speakers - Klipsch
Subs - Rythmik

Did you recently update the firmware?

I have The Revenant 4K and have watched it several times with no issues, but I didn't mess with the search function. I'll try it out and report back.

I have not played that disc yet, I will be watching this weekend probably. I have noticed corruption in the OSD from time to time. For UHD I have only watched the Martian and Sully. The Martian was great but I had some motion issues and discoloration on Sully that I think got sorted in the TV. And once my TV crashed playing The Martian. First time it ever did that. So, I dunno, For the price of it, I am not worried. UHD is still very new and I am sure the software will catch up at some point. I imagine the SOC makers have reference software that comes with them and then it gets modified (Branded) by the player makers. Features are stripped, licenses are applied and voila, here is your POS.

Sounds like a scratched or dirty disc?

The disk likely isn't scratched since it continues to play....just search menu appears as a ghost image and all the controls are frozen. I can't even power off unless I unplug it.

I was able to replicate your issue with The Revenant. Search function would stay on and I couldn't pause, stop, anything. Had to hold the power button for about 5 sec to turn off the player. I tried with The Martian since it's also a Fox release and had no problems at all. Weird.

I have about 20 UHD discs, have watched them all, and often will pause/rewind during the movie. This is the only one I've seen to have this issue.

But, thanks for checking it out.

Might be an issue with the duplication process and how this player works with it.

Has anyone else tried playing files from a USB drive? When I tried this morning it would not recognize .mkv files at all and it would say for every .mp4 files that "the file cannot be played back".

Philips BDP7501 UHD Blu-Ray Player

Hi, just bought this, looking forward to testing it out with Mad Max tonight.

I'll be running this through a Marantz 1606 to a Sony 930D. Do I need to adjust any settings on the 7501 out of the box?

Thanks.
