I never, ever said that you did. That particular paragraph was directed at those "people" that would argue that it is great.

For under $300 on sale, one could get the Samsung player that provides everything but DV. Not useful for playing Xbone games, however...
HDR10 is the required standard. Most of us don't need or want DV capability if it adds more to the cost. So not just a stretch, but wrong. Period.

I have a 3.2 system. Do you need to change between 5.1 and 7.1 LPCM depending on the movie, or just leave it set to one. Guess Im curious as to what 7.1 does when the track is 5.1?
UHD and HDR for Netflix. No UHD for Amazon for me.

Odd.

This is what the website says and I have seen it claimed elsewhere.

Just got an Xbox one s. Plugged it directly into tv and enabled deep color. I have an E6. Went to video settings and had all green checks except 4K 50hz. Anyone know if this is correct for our tv or should all the checks be green?

You guys get so serious that it becomes insulting.

The console should have bit streaming. If it did, hardly anyone would be complaining. Not having it is inexcusable to me, and telling me I can go make my own over it would be silly.

Just got my One S hooked up last night and popped in a UHD BD and wow are the colors hot and blown out. I stuck the same disc in my Samsung player to make sure I wasn't crazy and the difference is astounding. There is no way I could use the Xbox for movies unless there is some setting I am missing. I am hooked up to my smaller Sony 65x930c. Might try it on my 75x940c, but I am expecting similar results. Is anyone else seeing this?

We need a separate thread for people to cry/complain about the audio shortcomings. That way we can actually get someone in this one to write about the features it does have. MS did not market this for the true AVS enthusiast. If anything, hopefully it drives the price down for the available UHD BD players that most of us require.

I'm waiting for the 1TB Madden edition. Haven't had a console in years, and will never have anything beyond a 5.1 setup. Seems like a win-win to me.

What else is silly is coming in an owner's thread and pouting about a feature we all knew wasn't going to be there in the first place...

It says HDMI 2.0. There seem to be a lot of those around with similar prices. But they only have HDMI 2.0. And you need at least HDMI 2.0a to be able to deal with HDR content.

EDIT: Although I see in the question/answer section they say that it will actually pass an HDMI 2.0a signal. If true then it would be a good deal.

If you get it let us know if it works out.

Did you adjust your HDR settings on that input to match what your Samsung input is using? This is what I did on my 850C and the HDR from UHD BD content on my XBOne S looks similar, if not the same, as what I get from my Samsung K8500.

Yeah, I actually just unplugged the Samsung and used the same HDMI for the One S just to verify it wasn't a settings issue in the TV. The difference is most notable with reds. As an example, in the opening of Star Trek Into Darkness when Spock is going down into the volcano all of the lava is just a red smear. There is absolutely no detail. Completely different experience on the Samsung player so I am not too sure what is going on here. I have tried all three color depth settings in the Xbox with no visible change. Really feel like I am just missing something obvious here.

Unlike the Samsung UBD-K8500 player and the Amazon app for Samsung 4K TVs, with the XBox One S, there are no videos with the UHD banner above the Prime banner on the screen. Maybe the XBox One S will get an updated Amazon app in the future.

These are the steps I took to reconfigure that setting:

System Setup
Other Setup
Zone Setup
Main/HDZone
Output Setting > HDZONE

I lose the ability to output on HDMI 3, but I've no need for that anymore (I was initially sending the signal to my P65-C1's HDMI Input 5, as well as HDMI Input 2).

So, great news! Another firm confirmation the SC-95 seems to be HDMI 2.0a compliant. :-)

I fully take the blame on this for not quite fully understanding what Main/HDZone did.

Ok, video stuff:

  • IMO, Netflix 2160p/UHD/HDRlooks great
  • Blu-ray playback seemed to be as expected, Spears and Munsil looked good too
  • I jumped around some on Allegiant UHD and it looked good too
  • I checked my speaker levels using the 5.1 uncompressed out and spears and munsil, and the levels matched what I would have gotten from my other player
  • I do not like the Amazon app as much, does not even tell you if you are getting HD or 1080p HD like some, but I ope they update with an HDR version soon anyways

Netflix Debug Menu

Playback popup for details while playing a disc (I like this)

Netflix resolution details

Amazon

1080p blu-ray

Yeah, I find it funny that the blu-ray app is RGB 1080p 8bit and 2160p BT2020 rgb 10 bit, but the Netflix app is bt 2020 ycbcr 10 bit.

RGB did not cause an issue for my display, but it shows you they aren't kidding when people have said the Netflix app takes over and does it's own thing when launched. IMO, M$ should get the blu-ray app using ycbcr and not RGB for less chance of owner issue.

So it's not sending 2160P24 for Netflix UHD content? That's not good.

I watched the Trek Volcano scene twice from the XBOne S and twice from my K8500. I never saw any red smearing. They both looked similar to me. Although it did seem like the K8500 picture was a little sharper than what I saw from the XBOne S.

Not really. Roku has never done it and Netflix has always looked outstanding. I watched part of an episode of Last Chance U in UHD, and it looked great, and motion was fine. While Id rather it output 24hz, I can't see an issue PQ wise with it not doing it.

I'll be interested in testing the difference between the built-in app on my C6 (which does support 24hz I think) and the 60hz from the XB1S, but it will have to wait until the end of the month. It would be cool if MS let 3rd party apps do 24hz.

Aye, I wish the box did 24 Hz for streaming apps like bluray. That's less of a concern for me. Video I watch on streaming apps less critical viewing to me. Plus many tvs, like the new Vizios, do the reverse pull down. They analyze the 60 Hz signal coming for the 3:2 pull down and then actively negate. So the judder and effects are 24 to 60 Hz conversion you never actually see.

It's not about the picture quality it's about eliminating judder. If you apply 3:2 pull down, which is has to do to go from 24fps to 60, then it introduces judder. While if you display at a mulitple of 24, like a 120/240fps TV will do, you don't have any judder issues.

My Roku 4 outputs Netflix at 2160P24 so there is no judder to worry about. If I have it set for 2160P60 output, then you most definitely can see the judder. The way it was with the ROku3 and ROku 2 with 1080P24 content being output at 1080P60.

Anyone else having issues with the BD player app not upscaling BDs after the latest update? It was working fine the past few days and quite brilliantly, but after updating my console yesterday morning it will no longer upscale at all. Its really strange because the Xbox One S will upscale games and other video app such as Hulu into 4K no issue and UHD BDs work fine, but DVDs and regular BDS, nope not happening any longer.

I just set mine up yesterday, and as you can see, on a blu-ray it output 1080p/24 rgb 8 bit. I thought it was supposed to be like this.
