FWIW in this Sony 45ES review (linked) from 2017, the reviewer used a Samsung UBD-K8500 4K UHD player.

Projectionists at this website often positively mention Panasonic UB820. You might check that owner's thread for compatibilty.

UHD player only for Dolby Atmos?

This group has helped me a great deal when I was putting together my home theater 4 years back. I am back with my upgrade questions.

I have a JVC 4910 and a Denon 4000 with a 7.2 setup on a 235 screen (133”) with an Oppo 103 and non 4K Apple TV. . After a long time I am finally taking the Atmos plunge and moving to a 7.2.4 confit with upgrading my receiver to support it.

I am a big Redbox guy since they work out cheaper for me. I am finding out that once I move to Atmos there are certain studios that give the Atmos option only when I go to the UHD blur ray.

This means for watching the UHD Blu-ray I believe I need a new player. Anything else that will need to be changed here? I am essentially moving to UHD only for the sounds than the real 4K.

Your help in anything I am missing here would be very much appreciated.

At least you never pulled the trigger. I bought one and then sold it in favor of the Sony x800 a couple of years ago.

The main reason I lament the mistake is because it is the only device to let you play back DOlby Vision rips. But at the time I only had an HDR10 set. And that was a major factor in my decision to sell the OPPO at the time.

Although even if I had kept it, I probably would have sold it by now anyway. Because of the sky high resale value.

It's just bitstreaming the audio to the receiver. Which every player should be able to do. My old BD players from a decade ago can bitstream Atmos audio.

Hey guys. I'd like to get a 4k disc player to go with my Sony 900e 4k TV. What are the current recommendations? Will be paired with an Onkyo TX-RZ920 receiver running 7.1.2.

Yep, it's excellent. The only thing missing is Dolby Vision support which your 900E doesn't support either.

Yes, that is correct.

I ended up getting the 800 yesterday and hooking it up. I'm getting a stunning 4K picture. My copy of "The Avengers" on 4K looks amazing.

The only thing I'm not completely sure of is if I'm getting Atmos sound or not. I have the Sony player connected to my Onkyo receiver, and then sending the picture to my 900E display via HDMI Arc. Is there a setting on the 800 player I need to check? My Onkyo doesn't seem to be indicating an Atmos signal.

I assume that you have already tested that ATMOS works properly from other sources?

For the 800, you should have the audio set to bitstream out.

Edit: BTW, the Avengers doesn't have an ATMOS soundtrack. Try a different disc that has ATMOS

You're right, I misread the info. Did you try bitstream out and did that help?

Yes, apparently I had to set "BD Audio Mix" to Off. That fixed the issue.

That depends on your use.

.UB820 is a very good bluray player.

Oppo is better on CD, +sacd and DVDs.

Hey all

Looking to possibly upgrade my the first 4K player I got, which was a UBK90, to something in a higher price range with hopefully a superior picture quality.

1. Looking in the $500 price range.
2. Must have Dolby Vision with auto detection
3. Ability to play MKV files off USB drive with Dolby Atmos/DTS:X Sound.

My front runner right now is the Panasonic 820. I think it does all I want, except maybe #3 . I actually need to check if I have another device than can play the files when I get home. Not being able to do #3 isn't the end of the world, I really just have some sound trailers on a usb drive I like to show people.

Player will be outputting to a LG C8 65 inch.

Thanks.

i've been tracking the x800 for a while now and was surprised to see it's price drop to $199 and recently go back up to $229. i had thought $199 was the new normal price with the imminent release of the X800mk2.

i'm hoping that the X800mk2 falls in under $300. i have a Sony 900e just like Invader3, but i wouldn't mind "future proofing" for Dolby Vision as i envision this will be the last disc player i buy. (at least that's what i'm hoping for with the better build quality of the x800 boxes)

still wishing i wasn't waffling about the Oppo203 when i first got our 900e. they closed shop right when i was grappling with spending $500 for a player. (i have loved my Oppo83 over all these years)

I don't know if DV or HDR10+ will win the war.

It depends if it will be available on all screens.

Today it's except of LG and expensive Oleds not available.

I remember a few standards, Laserdisk, HD dvd and Minidisc....

Does PlayStation and Xbox support DV?

In the market for a bluray player

Pairing it with a JVC RS66u e-shift. Looking at the sony x700 and x800 but saw the new x800m2 and 1100es coming out. Thoughts/opinions?

For Projector only I would look for one of the Panasonics, they are famous for pixel mapping.

Sony is good also, and I have Sony myself.
I choose this mainly for the Sacd, streaming and Dvd audio.

If Panasonic gets a BD player with Sacd I'm interested.

But check out the new Panasonics pixel mapping...

This is important specially on projectors.

I currently have a Sony 900e which I dont think will ever get DV. I really dont care too much about streaming capabilities because I just use the TV apps. That being said I am trying to decide between the LG UBK80 and the Sony Ubpx700. Since my TV wont ever have DV can I just turn it off on the X700 and be ok or should I just go with the UBK80 so I never have to worry about the DV. Or, should I just wait for the X800m2 to come out all though from my understanding the only real difference between 800 and 700 is DV (correct me if I'm wrong). Thanks in advance.

You can turn off DV on the X700, and it's advised you do so if not using. X700 would help you for the future, if your circumstances change. It also has built-in WiFi.
FWIW currently at Best Buy US, X700 is only $30 more than LG UBK80.

X800M2 will be a better build than the X700, but it may be $200+ more. Prices to be announced.

Good luck. Enjoy.

I like 800 series most, but I also want the 700 because it fits my rack.

I don't like the build and disc play on Koreans.

Lg and Samsung make nice TV and phones. The rest I don't like. No offense.. Just my opinion and experience.

I agree Panasonic 9000 is best, but the member asked for Oppo...

Ok you say that it 820 has the same videoboard? I have heard that also but not confirmed.

Some say that the cheapest Panasonic also have the same videoboard.... But no DV.

The 9000 has the best build...

But don't have support for Sacd.

I just bought my first 4K OLED (LG C8 65 inch), and I need to start thinking about 4K content. I have a ROKU Ultra for streaming, but I also want the ability to play UHD 4K blu ray discs. My disc watching is somewhat limited. I only buy around 5 titles per year, and probably watch a disk from my library like once a month. Cost is not a huge deal for me, but I don't want to throw money away either. I want a player that is fast, and just works. I've read some stories of players randomly freezing... That sounds horrible, and it would drive me bananas. I don't do much audio, but I will obviously have a lot of standard DVDs and Blu-Rays in my library.

From the reading I have done, it sounds like my best options are to either wait for the Sony X800M2 (since it will have Dolby Vision), or buy the Panasonic UB820 right now. There is also a cheap LG player available (UBK80?), but I think I want something better that that. Any opinions from the experts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks!
FWIW early indications are that the X800M2 will have the same manual DV choosing as the X700, not automatic. See X800M2 anticipation thread for reference to that.

Panasonic UB9000 (retailer Value Electronics) for your OLED, and for excellent upscaling of DVD and Blu-ray. Better build than UB820. Neither play SACD.
