I'm hoping for an indication that it will have DV. If so, that's a sale for me based on reviews of the 800 to date. All the apps I want plus DV. Done and done.

I have a feeling IF they are going to get it, both the 800 and 1000ES will get DV.

It's going to have DV - Sony would not be stupid enough to release new TVs with DV and not have their blu ray players have DV.

So if the 800 and the 1000 have DV - the question is - what makes the 1000 $400 "better" than the 800

I'm not sure you can say it is worth $400 more, but there are several things different that may or may not be worthwhile to someone. As far as base video processing and streaming, I imagine they will be the same.

We buy things all the time that are priced more than they are worth.

I'm not so sure about that. This is not the Sony of old.

Apple is one of the biggest offenders of that. And over the years Sony has been too. Maybe not as much now as they used to be.

The x1000es has a few extra connection options (Optical Out, RGB out, RCA audio L/R out), removable power cord, 3 year warranty, and i believe a slightly better audio DAC but not sure on this one? Outside of that everything else is pretty much the same. Not worth an extra $400 IMO.

There was a post in the Receivers forum under the Sony STR-DN1080 thread where the following question was asked:

Quote:
Sony customer service told me this when I asked about the STR-DN1080: According to their current support documentation available to their customer service/support team, there wasn't anything stating whether the STR-DN1080 would or could receive Dolby Vision support via a firmware update. Doesn't mean it can but also doesn't mean it can't.

They also told me this about their UBP-X800 UHD 4K player: they did have documentation in their system that states this player will be getting a firmware update to add Dolby Vision support.
If this is legit I would also expect it to apply to the x1000es as well.

Hopefully they will be shipping in about 2 weeks.

There is the MSRP and then there is "what you pay". In my experience the MSRP price for the consumer line (the X800) is equal to "what you pay"... In other words MSRP and MAP are one it the same and there isn't any discounting. In the past, I have found that I can get some discounting on the ES line which I hope will bring the X800 and the X1000 closer in the "real" purchase price... Time will tell.

According to John at Value Electronics, my order is shipping directly from the Sony Distribution Center in GA. I hope this starts shipping before the 17th. I currently don't have a 4K player and I have a bunch of 4K movies laying around waiting for this to finally come out

My current opinion is the best value is the X800, the best player is the UB900. What sucks is neither currently want to support DV...

Im still going to use this player in the main HT and put the X800 in the back room.

The Panny is a great player. What's holding me back is their reliability. Throughout the years, their BD players only last a few years before they start having issues with the laser and stop reading blu rays. That seems like a common complaint on the all the Panny's BD players thread.

Best Buy has this for pre-order. It appears Sony changed his mind and are giving this a wide release?

Nice!

Now if Sony would only confirm Dolby Vision...

It seems rather silly - it has DTS:X... what's the big deal with Dolby Vision...

FYI. Players (i.e Blu-Ray /UHD) do not need to show "support" for or "have" DTS:X or Dolby Atmos capabilities. I see this being used all the time incorrectly. That is a marketing scheme when it is used/claimed. If AVR's can handle Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA via bitstream, they can handle DTS:X and Atmos.

AVR's are the devices that decode DTS:X and/or Atmos. Those are the devices that must have the updates/capabilities, etc.

Yup. Identical functionality and features of the x800. Uses the same firmware as the x800. The x1000 adds extended warranty, front display, analog outputs, optical out, rack mount kit (optional), removable power cord and RS232 for home automation. If you don't need any of those ... the x800 should suffice.

I'll be running the X800 on a bedroom display and the X1000ES will go in the main HT.

What about the internal components? aren't some of those different? I do see the X1000 draws 13% more power than the X800.

Probably the addition of the front display has something to do with that.

Don't think you need that much power for just a front display...
