It's not because of fees. It's because the professional tools to author DV discs just became available recently.

There are 3 more scheduled over the next month or so. Lionsgate has Power Rangers, Sony has Resident Evil: Vendetta, and Universal has Fate of the Furious. Beyond that, we don't know. Plus, Warner announced they will release DV discs but haven't announced a title yet. Then there are all the Disney rumors. So relax. DV is just getting started.

Please take software chat on availability, etc. to the dolby thread in the software area or the HDR area where there is a dedicated thread on titles.

Seriously, the Oppo actually offers a lot of value for what you are getting. Yes, might seem expensive up front, but well worth it in my opinion. You can get cheaper, you can get pricier than the 203, but I don't know that you can get the overall VALUE from any other brand that you can with the Oppo when you consider quality, support, flexibility, and feature set. (no, it doesn't stream anything, THANKFULLY. Your TV will do that, so don't even let that be a factor in your decision making process!)

Just save your pennies, buy NEW, be happy. Be patient, DV is just getting started, don't even worry about it at this point, but Oppo has you covered in case you are. I don't really think anybody knows how prevalent it will become.
Thanks for the great reply! I appreciate it.. I do have one question with the oppo 203, I have a ton of blu-rays. Just how good will they look going from the oppo to my oled? Does the oppo 203 do a good job at upscaling 1080P content to 4k(where it's noticeable- currently I use a higher end Pana BDT-500 as my blu-ray player) or is it more of a marketing thing to make you feel a player can make the 1080p Pq look better on a 4k panel? Thanks

Good to know, I was not aware it was so new as I saw most of the 2016 lg's even the non oleds have DV support built in. Now I know! Thanks

They look very good to my eye, but if the question is do they look better than on a 1080p display, that's hard to say. The display technologies are different and tend to obscure scaling effects. At least for me: I went from a full-array local dimming LED in 1080p to LG OLED in 4K. They have a different look.

1080p -> 4k scaling by the display vs by the player look very similar to me, so I suspect we are close to the edge where subjectivity reigns.

There are a bunch of DV titles already out for Internet streaming services like VUDU. And LG's 2016 TVs with DV support will play those as DV.

There are even more DV titles in Theatrical release -- i.e., in movie theaters -- which have not yet come out as DV for home media. With more in the pipeline.

DV on UHD shiny discs just started shipping on June 6 with the first two titles -- the same day OPPO released DV support for the 203 and 205. The OPPO 203 and 205 are the first disc players to ship DV support for such discs. LG's 2016 TVs with DV support will also play those as DV when played in the OPPO. There are more discs in the pipeline, too, although the studios have been playing coy releasing those details -- waiting for the players to come out.

DV discs are new. Oppo's firmware update to play DV discs last week is the very first of any device. But DV streaming has been around for almost 2 years at Vudu and Netflix.

I think this depends on your display. On my particular Sony display, I give a slight edge to the Oppo, and the Sony has a good upscaler. 1080p Blurays look great, and they should on your display too through the Oppo.

FYI, Bob was just trying to add a bit of levity. If you stick around, you'll find that he's a HUGE asset to this forum and one of the most helpful folks who posts here. (Don't let this go to your head, Bob )

That said, his advice is actually spot on in that a bit of patience is in order as DV just became available on Bluray last week and just like every other format, it will take time for selection to improve.

Forced Subtitles

Can this player remove forced subtitles from Import BD's? Thinking about getting some German Blu's but I hear they have forced subtitles.

It can not. The discs control this and players are obliged to follow what the disc demands.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I really did not know how to take it. I guess after some time on here I will learn frequent posters "levity" and sarcasms. Hard to pick up a "personality" in words initially especially for newer members!

Thanks again...

I installed the latest update and reset my 203, but with HDR set to forced I could not get Deadpool to play. I set it to auto and it played and I did have HDR show up in the picture menu. Is this normal behavior?

105 vs 203 sq

Anyone own a 105 than moved to the 203? Wondering what you thought about the sound quality (CD/SACD) between the 2. I've had the 203 since it came out and sold off the 105 . Just started to listen to music on the 203 (vinyl is more my passion), I have to say I thought the 203 was doing a hell of a job and though I don't have the 105 to directly compare the two, thought the 203 was a bit better. Anyone else to any comparing?

Thanks!
David

I used to be able to load FLAC files on an external usb disk drive and have the Oppo 203 play them under the Music application. I tried last night and the Oppo just kept spinning. I reformatted the drive to Fat32, copied the files and tried again without success. Anyone out there seen this issue and been able to resolve it.

Thanks.

Thanks. I reached out to them via phone and email. Awaiting a response. On The initial call we agreed to reformat the drive to FAT32, restore the files, and try again. That did not work so I have updated Oppo via email support. I’ll update thread as I learn more.

Problem solved. I checked to see if there was a firmware update available. There was one available and I proceeded with the update. After the update I was able to play FLAC files from my usb external seagate disk drive. I’m not sure how the two events are related, and can only speculate which I won’t do here.

Does anyone know if the HDR to SDR conversion has been fixed to correctly display bt.2020? I remember reading a while back that there was some tone mapping issues and black crush maybe?

I apologize if this has already been answered.

Thanks

It's been said to be much better than it was, still not perfect, but...

Why waste $ on more cheap stuff, it's like challenging a dragon with a pocket knife.

Thank you. Is it safe to say that those using this feature would still prefer it to rec709 even with it's flaws?

There's been a few posts about it being better since the upgrade, I haven't personally checked it yet.
Look Early December, cuz the FW Date is 11/27
