Someone mentioned that Dolby Vision may be added as Firmware.

Everything I have read indicates that Dolby Vision cannot be added via firmware upgrade. It has to have a Dolby Vision chip in the hardware. So it would seem to indicate that if Dolby Vision is not in the original product release it will not be in this model and it cannot be added with firmware.

The chip could very well be in the player. The FW update would activate it. The 2016 LG OLEDs initially came out without DV activated. A FW update enabled it.

The 203 uses a chip from Mediatek and Mediatek have been working on a chip that handles Dolby Vision. That could be the Mediatek chip that the 203 is using.

Note that Oppo said on Facebook in response to a specific question about whether the 203 could do Dolby Vision "At launch, the UDP-203 will be capable of supporting HDR10. Additional support for other HDR formats such as Dolby Vision may be available at a later date via firmware upgrade, but it’s not something we can promise at this time." Dolby need to certify players which support Dolby Vision and they have not certified any player as yet, which means no manufacturer is in a position to say that their player can do Dolby Vision. That does not mean that there are no players currently released or, like the 203, awaiting release which can't process Dolby Vision, it just means that no player has been certified as yet. If Oppo wanted to say that the 203 can not do Dolby Vision they could have said precisely that but they did not say that. They said that it "may be available at a later date via firmware upgrade: and that "it's not something we can promise at this time". They can't make a promise before Dolby issues certification.

I'm not going to speculate about Oppo but I will speculate about Dolby. It has been announced that there will be UHD discs with Dolby Vision released in the second quarter of 2017. There will be players capable of playing those discs before discs are released. The last thing Dolby wants is discs with Dolby Vision encoding being sold and no one being able to play them, and they will probably want to make a big presentation close to the time when the discs hit stores but they also won't want players out there capable of doing Dolby Vision and no discs to demonstrate it so I would expect announcements about certification to be made sometime in the first quarter of next year and there not to be much time between when the announcements about players are made and the release of the first discs. That's basic marketing strategy. Dolby want Dolby Vision to succeed and they don't want people to get the idea that buying a player that can do Dolby Vision isn't worthwhile because there are no Dolby Vision discs for them to play. On that basis I don't think we can expect to find out which players can do Dolby Vision until a date much closer to the release of the first discs with Dolby encoding. Until that happens the only clear announcement on the Dolby Vision capability of any player that can be expected are announcements that a particular player won't be able to do Dolby Vision.

Oppo don't have a history of saying things which aren't true and they are also not in a position to say that the 203 can do Dolby Vision. They are quite free to say that it can not do it and they chose not to say that the 203 can't do it. They were very careful and precise with what they said. All we can do until we get a clear statement from Oppo is to take them at their word that Dolby Vision capability may be added via firmware update.

Take at least 20% off the price, due to VAT. $792-$158=$634. So probably $599 in the US.

Careful. I've never seen posts get deleted out of this thread faster than the ones about price a couple days ago, it was insane. I guess discussing costs isn't part of the anticipation?

Regardless, Oppo has only set their 'target' price (which if it holds looks incredible).

(fingers crossed that cinavia is only implemented for shiny disc playback and not for media streaming, since my personal library would probably break otherwise; the 103 got this right; hopefully the 203 does, as well.)

Regarding the anticipation, I found myself tempted yesterday by the Samsung UHD player for $179 (and the XBOX One S for $220). The Oppo for $499 seemed like a no brainer vs $300 player. I am still waiting for the announcement, but need to see the final price and availability. I am using this player in the living room with a new 4K set. The Oppo might make more sense when it comes time to upgrade my projector/theater room to 4K.

Although tempting the cheaper first generation options I think I am going to wait for a second generation player (and I consider the 203 the first of the second generation players). It's rather unfortunate that they are getting so close to Christmas before getting them in anyone's hands.

Wake up and smell the coffee. It'll be $499 here in the U.S. Europe and Australia always get to pay more than us here in the U.S. it has always been that way with OPPO and will continue to be that way.

Best solution is to have someone in the USA buy it for you, then ship it over declared as a warranty repair, value $0. All you pay is the exchange and small shipping amount and no customs or tax.
That's how I buy 95% of my electronics living in Canada.

Dunno for sure, since until I sold my 103 in anticipation of the 203, I didn't run into the issue at all and wasn't paying attention. But now I am seeing it frequently, using a PS3 for playback from my server. Same movies played fine on the Oppo.

Warner, Universal, Disney, Fox are all clients of CinEx HD Labs and appear to use it more than I thought.

Anyway, this is a little off topic except to say that I hope with anticipation to see the 203 behave like the 103 when it comes to media streaming of local content. (Or better )

Spoiler!

I just bought the LG OLED B6 and like a poster above I was tempted to purchase the Samsung 8500 for $197.

So can someone tell me why I should wait for the Oppo 203 at $500 instead of buying the Samsung now and enjoy my 4k Blu-ray movies?

As part of my random anticipation checks, I just visited the blu-ray players section of the oppo digital web site. It no longer says "new products coming soon", now it lists a refurbished 103, but says "out of stock" :-).

You'd think this was a once in a lifetime limited offer deal. C'mon peeps it will be out soon and they will have plenty. The world will not end if the player is not delivered by Christmas. If you absolutely must have a player now pickup a cheap Samsung to hold you over until you can get your OPPO fix. Unreal........

It never ceases to amaze me how naive people can be - thinking placing a pre-order with a third party intermediary somehow guarantees them shipment of a yet unreleased product.

Samsung, Philips and Panasonic are seizing the opportunity to garner sales away from OPPO by dropping pre Christmas prices.

I bought the Samsung player when I bought my E6 3 m months ago. At that time there was no certainty that Oppo would be releasing a player this year and I wanted to be able to watch UHD discs. The Samsung was the only player available in Australia at the time, I always intended it to be a stopgap while I waited for an Oppo player and I have a pre-order in with my local retailer here in Australia for a 203 as soon as they are released. I can tell you why I'm buying a 203.

I have a 105 and I'm spoiled. It's got a decent remote, it has extremely flexible settings which allow me to get the best quality video I've ever had from a player, it's got a decent information display not only on the front of the player but also on screen, it's built extremely well, and it's a pleasure to use.

The 8500 does a reasonable job but it is the most physically frustrating disc player I have ever had.It has the worst remote I've ever used. It's too small, the buttons are too small and next to each other with no gaps, it's all black, and there's no back light. I have to turn a light on at night to use it and I have to be looking directly at the remote in order to use it. I can't watch anything while I'm u sing the remote, I actually have to stop watching the movie in order to be able to use the remote. I
Apart from that it has minimal options in the settings. It has no front display and the on screen information display doesn't tell me much at all. It's incredibly lightly built and I have wondered whether it weighs any more than my 105's disc tray. With the Samsung With UHD discs it gives a good picture but I find myself constantly wondering whether I could do better if I had more options. I still use the 105 for everything apart from UHD discs purely because I find the Samsung so frustrating to use.

There's also the fact that Oppo's reputation for reliability and service are somewhat different to Samsung's reputation for quality and service.

That's why I'm more than happy to replace the Samsung player with the 203. YMMV.
