So can someone tell me why I should wait for the Oppo 203 at $500 instead of buying the Samsung now and enjoy my 4k Blu-ray movies?
I bought the Samsung player when I bought my E6 3 m months ago. At that time there was no certainty that Oppo would be releasing a player this year and I wanted to be able to watch UHD discs. The Samsung was the only player available in Australia at the time, I always intended it to be a stopgap while I waited for an Oppo player and I have a pre-order in with my local retailer here in Australia for a 203 as soon as they are released. I can tell you why I'm buying a 203.
I have a 105 and I'm spoiled. It's got a decent remote, it has extremely flexible settings which allow me to get the best quality video I've ever had from a player, it's got a decent information display not only on the front of the player but also on screen, it's built extremely well, and it's a pleasure to use.
The 8500 does a reasonable job but it is the most physically frustrating disc player I have ever had.It has the worst remote I've ever used. It's too small, the buttons are too small and next to each other with no gaps, it's all black, and there's no back light. I have to turn a light on at night to use it and I have to be looking directly at the remote in order to use it. I can't watch anything while I'm u sing the remote, I actually have to stop watching the movie in order to be able to use the remote. I
Apart from that it has minimal options in the settings. It has no front display and the on screen information display doesn't tell me much at all. It's incredibly lightly built and I have wondered whether it weighs any more than my 105's disc tray. With the Samsung With UHD discs it gives a good picture but I find myself constantly wondering whether I could do better if I had more options. I still use the 105 for everything apart from UHD discs purely because I find the Samsung so frustrating to use.
There's also the fact that Oppo's reputation for reliability and service are somewhat different to Samsung's reputation for quality and service.
That's why I'm more than happy to replace the Samsung player with the 203. YMMV.
