I have to turn a light on at night to use it and I have to be looking directly at the remote in order to use it. I can't watch anything while I'm u sing the remote, I actually have to stop watching the movie in order to be able to use the remote. (snip)
As covered in the UBD-K8500 thread, there are alternate remotes available. I got a AK59-00104R for less than $10US (new) on eBay. It's much better sized to my adult male hands, and it has separate fast forward and reverse buttons.

I'm mostly using a Logitech Harmony 700 universal remote now. It's handy when switching modes (cable TV, BD player, CD player, FM radio). Its main drawback is not supporting voice command, which is mainly of interest for controlling my Comcast Xfinity X1 cable box.

You're right, there are alternative remotes available but that doesn't address the other issues I raised . and they also are important to me. Over the years I've used Panasonic and Denon DVD players and Panasonic and Oppo Blu-ray players. The 8500 is the only Samsung player I've used. Based on my past experience I'd take Panasonic or Denon over Samsung and Oppo over all of them, and I'd still rate them that way even if I was happy with the 8500's remote. I want more control over my settings than the 8500 provides, I want more informative information displays, and I'd like much better build quality and a company with a better reputation for product and service quality than Samsung has.

That's my experience and preferences.

And while I didn't mention it in my earlier response, I really appreciate having at least 1 HDMI input so I can use the player as a video processor for other sources.

Quick question on OPPO and the use of the HDMI INPUT port. If feeding the OPPO a 1080i signal, would you be able to select the signal output to TV? If fed 1080i can you select 1080P output? Can you select it to output 4K? Or is the deinterlacing/scaling output fixed?
Thanks, Gerry

You've always been able to select the output on previous Oppo players but until the actual specs on the 203 comes out, you can't be absolutely sure. I would say the probability is close to 100% though.

Where do you pre-pay for that? I don't see where they are takin money for pre-order.

I don't even have a 4K PJ yet, but I can get the Atmos tracks of the 4K discs I've bought in anticipation of having one!!

Thanks1

Oppo USA does not take preorders but you can be notified when out of stock items become available.

Yeah, a lot of stuff will get a poster's knuckles rapped in a New York minute. Every time I get ready to post, I feel as if I'm walking through a mine field. Could the anticipation be making everybody cranky?

I suppose it's all right to observe that the price for the 203 will almost certainly be more than many if now most other 4K HDR disk players are going for. That was the case with BD players when I bought my 103 but the 103 has been the most reliable disk player I have owned, by far. Thus, it should come as no surprise that I will place an order for a 203 at the earliest possible opportunity and do it with a smile on my face.

Oppo will first respond to personal buyers that have supplied their emails for notification of the immediate availability. Yes its is quite probable demand will exceed supply of initial batch readied for shipment. They will get more in fairly quickly. Best of luck with what you wrote.

I can't disagree with any of that, although my own needs are simpler.

My main regret in buying the K8500 is price: I bought it a few months ago at a price a little below the original MSRP. It's a much better $200 player (price recently seen) than it was a $400 one. I'm on the OPPO 203 mailing list, but I may bide my time before considering one.

OPPO hasn't in the past, I wouldn't expect them to this time. Panasonic ans Samsung bundles weren't offered in the US. At least neither of the units I bought included movies.

Interesting; I had asked about this several pages back, but it was more a question regarding setup and demo discs, like the ones Oppo included with the BDP-83 (the AIX Records demo disc and HD Essentials setup tutorial). I remember when Panasonic used to include discs in the boxes of their players; when I bought my first Panny DVD player (which I still have), it came with the Meet the Parents DVD. When I bought the DMP-BD10A Blu-ray deck, it came with Fantastic 4, Pirates of the Caribbean and its sequel and some others...

Would be cool if the 203 came with a 4K title or two, but...

I'm sure some are better than others. I was just hoping this unit that I would buy for UHD would possibly make my 850 Blu-ray collection look better than they do in my Oppo BDP-83.

It will cost more because it will do more; for example, SACD, DVD-A, USB, DLNA, et al. I will be happy to have one box that does it all. I will order mine on day one.

Are you referring to the way the 203 will make Blu-rays look when upscaled to 4K as compared to the BDP-83's playback of native 1080p?

I can't see Blu-ray playback getting any "sharper" than what the 83 puts out (I own one myself and it's been flawless up until now, as it's been steadily succumbing to the dreaded drawer/loader failure).

In which capacity do you mean...there are differences between Blu-ray players in terms of native 1080p playback? If so, my experience has been quite different; coming from a Panasonic DMP-BD10A and going to the Oppo BDP-83, I didn't notice night-and-day differences in terms of Blu-ray/high definition playback (standard DVD upconversion was another thing altogether -- the 83 wiped the floor with the Panasonic, due to the better quality of the Anchor Bay VRS processor as compared to the Panny's -- I think -- proprietary design). There were perhaps some depth-of-field improvements (though slight) with the Oppo on BD playback, but nothing that made me feel "Blu-rays look better on this player."

Just my experience.

There were perhaps some depth-of-field improvements (though slight) with the Oppo on BD playback, but nothing that made me feel "Blu-rays look better on this player."

Just my experience.
How about comparing a PS3 and the current Oppo? How's the upscaling of 1080p blu-rays to 4K?

As is my BDP-93. It is also very nice that these players do retain decent value and I'll be able to recoup about 50% of the cost of the 203 by selling the old Oppo. It makes the upgrade a no brainer.

I can't see Blu-ray playback getting any "sharper" than what the 83 puts out (I own one myself and it's been flawless up until now, as it's been steadily succumbing to the dreaded drawer/loader failure).
I guess I'm referring to my hope that its will somehow enable my Sony 940D to do a better job of upscaling the native 1080p Blu-rays picture to 4K. Believe me, right now the combo of the 83 and my tv is stellar. Can always hope for more!
