I've stared deeply, thoughtfully into my crystal ball and it told me that Monday will be the release date. Regardless the actual release date, how long before the Beta testers are permitted to reveal or discuss their experiences with the 203?

Not sure; haven't owned nor witnessed the performance of any Oppo BD player since the 83...and I never used a PS3.

Oh, that's a different story -- at this point, I have no experience with 4K, as I don't have any hardware to support it -- but I'm in the same camp as you with regard to the combo of the BDP-83 and my current 1080p rear projection display.

Personally, I prefer when a source player upconverts discs to the native resolution of the display rather than a display doing it (just personal preference after experiencing the engines of certain TVs for this task), so I'm holding out for when I can get a new 4K display and the Oppo 203, so that the 203 can do the duties of playing back native 4K media while upscaling Blu-ray AND DVD to 4K...

After a couple of gray screens and failure to loads with my K8500 this weekend I'm more eager for the Oppo.

Really hope we see jailbreak firmware and ability to play back network ISO again quickly if there's any chance.

Preface: I am happy and willing to buy the 203 as is, without embellishments, as Oppo releases it.

Having said that, I do hope that the following happen:

  1. Dolby Vision is enabled in good time. There are many DV titles that are being touted on the Vizio thread streamed from Netflix and Vudu.
  2. That Netflix, Vudu and (?) other selected streaming services are enabled in some fashion eventually. I have enjoyed Netflix and Vudu on my 103D and hope to continue so in UHD.
  3. I'd like to see a willingness to try 4K Darbee (once and if it comes out) with the 20X players. Regular Darbee has added some clear (to me, in my opinion, etc.) quality to blurays, DVD, streamed and broadcast signals. Given that, I would love to see what it can and can't do for these players.

Simple requests, no?

When OPPO publishes specs, the Beta Testers will be free to discuss/explain the specs.

When the player actually ships (i.e., OPPO starts taking orders), the Beta Testers will be free to discuss operational details of the first release hardware/firmware. I.e., details which any owner might be able to discover all on his own by using the player for enough time. Also to help diagnose any bugs owners might discover, or explain misunderstandings of how the player works if something is not really a "bug".

The Beta Testers are never free to discuss details of as yet unreleased hardware or firmware, including when as yet unreleased firmware updates might happen, or what might be in them.

Out of curiosity, why do you care about DV streaming from a UHD player? If you have a DV capable display, you already have built-in apps that will stream in DV. If your display is not DV enabled, you can't watch DV from any source, internal or external.

Same reason I want an uhd player. Picture quality. If I didn't have a dv TV but was planning a purchase in the future I would hope any player I bought would have the feature.

Right, but my point was about DV streaming, which doesn't require an external source (at least not for any DV-enabled TV I'm aware of).

For the same reason I prefer the Netflix or Vudu implementation on my 103D to the ones on my Vizio SV panel.

I think the processing is better on the 103D, the sound can be processed by my AVR (not reflected back by unreliable HDMI ARC) and any goodness that you get from the Oppo video processing algorithms will benefit the streamed signal.

I'm also expecting DV disks to show up eventually, so the streaming is current, but looking to the future as well.

But you asked about streaming. The reasons I noted, plus I have more confidence in Oppo to keep and maintain a high level of performance than a panel manufacturer.

Let me preface this by saying I have no inside info on what's going to happen with any of these items. We'll have to wait and see on items 1 and 2, but both of these might be possible via firmware updates without requiring any hardware changes.

Item 3 will undoubtedly require hardware changes, so Darbee is very unlikely on the UDP-203 and would most likely show up on a "D" version of the player (ie: UDP-203D) if Oppo decides to go in that direction, but we'll have to wait and see what they decide to do. Given that Darbee doesn't yet have a 4K solution, this certainly won't happen soon.

Depending on how one has their system configured and the specific display is, it may just be easier to use Netflix (and other apps) on a device connected to the display rather than on the display itself. Some displays, especially projectors, don't have apps at all... The other obvious need for DV will be for when UHD Bluray titles start shipping with DV - making use of DV on those titles will require a DV capable player.

UHD downscaled to 1080p is not the same as straight up FHD. Especially on a high quality projection system.

Another scenario would be to take a DVD and scale it to 1080p.
Looks good with a quality scaler/processor right? ...but it certainly doesn't look like Blu-ray.
Now take a Blu-ray and scale it down to 480p... looks way better than DVD.
Same principle applies as you move up the chain to UHD.

Another Holiday/tease post about the 203 on OPPO's facebook page (I underlined and added the bold to their verbiage):

At long last. We're just more than a month away from the end of a long year, longer for more reasons than the Leap Year and Leap Second affordances. It has been a year of challenge and triumph, struggle and success alike, and the team here at OPPO Digital knows it particularly well. We're glad to have shared this year together with you, and we've much that we're so very eager to share with you and release in the time left in 2016 as well as around the temporal corner that will be the dawn of 2017.
Before this year is over, we have a month of delight and wonder ahead— a much needed remedy for the cynicism this year has made all too accessible. Will you be sharing moments with your loved ones indoors, or enjoying the brisk weather at its coldest outdoors?

Guys, it's just obvious stuff. They've already stated they plan to release the 203 in December, and a recent magazine article has stated
their new DAC to be released in January. If you all get overexcited about them stating the obvious, I hope they don't drop anything really
exciting and give you all cardiac arrest or something.

I think everyone realizes it's "obvious stuff"...they didn't say anything different than last week (or before). My only reason for posting it was it means today is probably not the day for their email...if it was they wouldn't have bothered to post a "holding pattern announcement" on their facebook page today.

They're no longer based in the US? That's news to me... However, being based in the US doesn't mean that all of their employees speak English as their first language, in which case it's reasonable that something like a Facebook post might not use perfect grammar. And quite frankly, it's kind of petty to be worrying about that, of all things; they're building a Bluray player not publishing an English dictionary or a novel.
