As we all know this hobby includes a wide range of pricing options and decisions. I have a Sony 5000 so buying a Lumagen made a ton of sense to me as it allows me to get the most out of my projector both in functionality and picture quality. Ive had the Lumagen for 3 years now and they continually improve it almost on a daily basis which means it is still state of the art today. So for a $2k/year investment to have the ability to do what it does in my system has been a tremendous investment in my opinion.

I don't see any reason why it would not work. The Oppo should accept the 4K24 BT.2020 SDR format from the UB820 for UHD discs. I don't expect there would be any issue with the 4K60 format from the UB820 Amazon and Netflix Apps either.

I had an issue with Game of Thrones, Season 2, Disk 1 - and that's just BD. Turned out to be a bad disk. Replacement disk, no problem!

That disc is out of spec. Best option is to return the set for replacement if you can.

Because that's how such discs behave. Works in one player and not another, loads intermittently, etc. Its actually more common than you might think. Maybe 10-15% of UHD discs present some issues that range from glitchy to unplayable. Invisible flaws and being out of spec are the causes.

I was rather hopeful for a new FW around the 2 year anniversary of the 203 launch.

It’s a long time to wait for “release day” feature promises to work correctly, ie still getting black crush on HDR to SDR conversions. I can’t see it arriving before Christmas now, even as a beta.

The other concern with Dolby Vision “bandwidth” misunderstandings between Oppo and Dolby meaning 24hz plays back as 60hz with motion issues. Plus Dolby Vision locking out Oppo tone mapping / target luminance settings.

I have two ways round this now though, which other projector owners might find useful.

1. Rip the UHD and extract the Atmos sound. RIP the BR to a MKV, and tsMuxer to add the Atmos sound to the BR rip. This gives great BR Video quality (709), no black crush, immersive sound, no 60hz conversion...but it’s quite time consuming.

2. Rip the UHD to mkv, and playback over network. The Dolby Vision is not invoked when playing over the network to a 1080P display, it shows as HDR - thus Oppo can tone map.

Check out the pics showing Dolby Vision 60hz...yet plays as 24hz when playing the rip over the network.

I thought the force HDR mode of oppo also got around he Dolby vision 60hz problem as in force HDR mode it disables the Dolby vision engine and plays the disc as if it were a HDR 10 only disc which should allow 24hz playback in sdr

Ok I know we arent supposed to talk about /modding/ our Oppo's on here, but can I ask per chance why? And seeing as the company has stopped making the Oppo player, does that mean it is fair game to discuss?

AVS has a general policy against discussions involving hacking, especially when related to disabling things like copy protection. This is presumably at least partly because they're concerned about legal action against them if they allow the discussion. Discussion of hardware mods for things like upgrading the analog circuitry or power supply are allowed and they've also allowed discussion of region free mods, but discussion of things like third party hacked firmware are not allowed here.

I tried this tonight even though I have no use case for the Oppo zoom function.

With the UB820 in SDR/BT2020 output mode to take advantage of the UB820 HDR Optimizer tone mapping, the Oppo zoom function works even with Dolby Vision discs that the UB820 plays as HDR10 because my JVC RS500 projector does not support Dolby Vision.

If I play the same Dolby Vision disc in my Oppo, it will not allow zoom whether in HDR10 output mode or HDR OFF BT2020 mode.

DTS:X MSTR and Dolby TrueHD Atmos are passed through the Oppo HDMI input.

I had originally set the Oppo to Source Direct to ensure the Oppo did not mess with the signal from the UB820, until I remembered that Source Direct disables the zoom function. So I left the Oppo in UHD Auto.

That might work if you have an HDR compatible display...but that won’t work for a SDR 1080p display.

Hi all. I just bought the OPPO 203 and I have a little problem with the UHD blu-ray with Dolby Vision. With UHD HDR10 it does not happen. It takes a while to activate the dolby vision on the TV, and this causes the screen to run out of signal, or the video later on during the transitions and the blu-ray menus. This happens if HDR is in AUTO mode, but if it is set to Dolby Vision, it is not.
My TV is a LG 49UH850V (8500 in usa). I have a Sony HT-ZF9 soundbar, but I have also tried to connect it directly to the TV and the same thing happens.
Is this normal?
A greeting.

Trying to see the use for 21:9 zoom with the oppo and a projector with a scope screen. I'm familiar with the zoom the projector to fill the scope screen but where does the 21:9 zoom of the oppo come into play?

Thanks, OK, it makes sense. It seems this is for those that dislike the black bars and are willing to sacrifice a bit of stretching to achieve this I guess?

I think it would be a little nuts for OPPO to release new firmware around Christmas. What if something goes wrong? Who would want to work the phones? Answer the emails?

Now, Epiphany, that's the time to release new firmware. No one expects that. And, also, the proper time to present gifts publicly.

Anybody ever try passing a ps4 pro or Xbox 1 x through the input? My ps4 pro has a handshake issue where it just blinks and tries to load. I can pass any other source just fine, including my Panasonic UB824 4k Blu Ray player.

I ran my XBox One X thru it and it worked fine. My problem is that the connection won't pass XBox / AppleTV version of Atmos.

Yep, I had to disable Atmos on the Apple tv in order to get any sound at all.

I suppose this question has been asked before, but I wonder how to add a directory from my home network as a favorite or shortcut. Now I have to jump around in a lot of directories before I get to the directory that I share from my PC. This opportunity is common in most media players, but it seems hard in my Oppo, or do I do something wrong? Grateful for suggestions in the matter.

That's how it worked for me [tho I'm running Roon on a QNAP]. It keeps automatically finding compatible "endpoints." For example, I now see my ChromeCast Ultra as a streaming target after Roon added that recently.
