Maybe dreaming but... will it be ever possible to have some EQ/Room correction embedded in the Oppo?

We MAY see disc compatibility updates.
We HOPE to see other functionality bugfixes.
We DREAM to see features that were already on Oppo's radar at the time of the product launch.

Not compatibility, bugfix, or already-discussed-at-launch feature? I think it's safe to just say no. Honestly it may be pretty safe to say no about all of the above at this point.

What are the known bugs in 65-0131 fw? The player/TV-LED Dolby Vision detection bug I remember. What else? Of course some features are still not working immaculately like bt.2020 SDR conversion. I'm still on 60-0625 and for the time being haven't found any issues in my modest setup or with the discs I own, thus not feeling need to update.

I also think we will get maybe 1-2 (mainly resolving disc compatibility issues) updates per year, at best, for following 1-2 years. Next one could be around Dec-Jan, if we are lucky .

No. I don't think the HW could even do that, even if Oppo wanted to. Most people have with blu ray players have AVRs with room correction, so no need.

OPPO broke ALAC support in the latest February 65-0131 fw concerning High Resolution .WAV files converted to ALAC .m4a files also mixed responses from owners having broken PGS subtitles not appearing with their MKV files, apparently .SRT based subtitles are unaffected.

Thanks for the reminder re: (possibly) broken PGS subtitles in mkv. Actually that might be the reason why I never updated to the latest fw.

Ok, so you have no issues with PGS subtitles in mkv with 65-0131?

Correct.

A note: all of my files have been run through Handbrake. It may be my imagination but I have sometimes thought that the originals from MakeMKV do not show all subtitles. A timing, bitrate or metadata issue? A worthy test would be a straight copy run through mkvmerge first; in ancient times it would fix up files that had header issues.

I’m hopeful we will see still firmware for disc compatibility and minor bug fixes, but I would expect 6+ months between them. Which means technically I would hope to see before end of this calendar year.

So my first 4k disc arrived today which I cannot play in 4K.

Gladiator 4K disc was put into my Oppo and right from the start my PJ (Optoma UHD65) is displaying the image as 1080p.

When I select the movie it then says I should connect my 4k player to 4k display for HDR.

All my other 4K HDR discs work fine.

I took out Gladiator and put in Star Trek 4k and a few others and then came back to Gladiator and still the same issue.

Any advice please?

Make sure you put the 4k disc into the player and not the Blu-ray.

Most 4K disc also come with a Blu-ray included. You would not be the first person to mistakenly put in the Blu-ray instead of the 4K disc. If that’s not the issue, hopefully someone will be able to assist you.

I do a lot of work with PGS subtitles and the problem very well could be subtitle-specific. Things like two sequential subtitles that end and start on the exact same timecode can drive certain players batty, while others don't mind at all, let alone should the second subtitle start before the first one ends. I have no idea if certain rippers may modify the SUP files as they extract them (i.e. if you're transcoding, there are ways to shrink the size of subtitles too), but problems could also potentially be introduced at ripping time (mismatched image sizes, etc) during the encoding of the new SUP files, ones that some players can handle and others cannot.

If this is true, then it's also possible you could modify the SUP file to not trip whatever bug you're encountering in the 203. Not a good solution for a bunch of films, but for one problematic favorite, it may just work.

I owned one for almost two years. I would say yes. I sold mine after auditioning the Panasonic ub820. I preferred the HDR performance using the HDR OPTIMIZER when paired with my Epson 5040 projector at the time. I have since upgraded to the Epson 6050. I still prefer the panny 820 for upconversion from 1080p to 4k. I thought the 820 outperformed the 203 in audio and video. I owned Oppo players 83, 93, 103 and 203. Panasonic was just better. Obviously since Oppo no longer makes bluray players firmware updates and support are very few and far between. Save your money and buy the Panansonic ub820

Mine is has always been. Just about the only niggle I have is when the wife leaves a disk in it and powers it down. Sometimes they get stuck and I have to pull the draw open a bit (and wince in the process) in order to get them out. But other than that, it's all good.

However, I would also agree somewhat with the poster above. The Oppo is not likely to get much love now that they have closed the doors. I am seriously considering selling mine and going for the Panny. Just because it's newer and will, most likely, get support for longer.

When I stream to my Oppo 203 from my media server (wired) using SMB I was occasionally getting some audio drop outs at higher bitrates. This really only occurred when watching a full disk back up of dolby vision titles. Streaming full quality UHD/HDR rips in MKV format has always been fine. This combined with having to have a another device other than my windows server as the master browser decided to try NFS. Many seem to indicate it is faster and less troublesome than SMB. I followed the instructions in the FAQ. It was very simple to set up and the Oppo sees the NFS server. On first run Win10 popped up a firewall alert and I gave permission for local access. However playback performance was horrible. Constant stuttering for MKVs and whole disc backups. I rebooted PC, router, and factory reset the Oppo but no improvement. Also tried turning off the SMB sharing just in case there was some conflict but no change. I know this not a networking thread but anybody have any ideas what could be wrong?

Edit: Also tried the Hane NFS server with same issue.

Has been since I bought it a couple of years ago. It just went through a move, reconnected it and everything worked like a charm.

Of course I use a lot of its capabilities. If you only use it as a disk player, it's still great, but others become competitive.

I use it for:
  1. Disk play. HDR10, DV, bluray and DVD. I handles all of those flawlessly.
  2. Network based video - I have about 200 MKVs from old HD-DVD movies that also perform flawlessly from a NAS.
  3. Network based audio - Over 2000 songs in mp3 format, about a 1000 in FLAC and other formats. It plays those very well.
  4. Disk based audio - CDs, bluray audio, SACDs and DVD-Audio. Great stereo and multichannel (most are 4.0 or 5.1)
  5. Processing of external signals through the HDMI input. I have mine connected to a Roku Ultra for all that it delivers.
To me the most used is #5 above. I cut the cord, so it is the source for our daily viewing. I use Directv Now, and that combination performs extremely well to a Vizio PQ 65.

In my experience, extremely reliable. I also own a BDP-83, a BDP-103D and the 203, which are all in use. In ten years of OPPO ownership, I haven't needed to have one serviced.

Mine is from the original release batch. It fell from about 2 feet onto a concrete floor. Two opposing corners of the front face were dented. Even thought it was purely cosmetic, I bought a new bezel/LCD from Oppo, swapped it out, and it's been flawless for shiny disc playback.

So yeah - they're built like a tank.

Press and hold the INFO button on the OPPO remote to bring up the Extended Info screen.

Scroll down and tell us what it says for Media Info and for HDMI Output, or take photos.

Also: what do have in Setup -> Video Setup -> Output Resolution and Setup -> Video Setup -> Custom Resolution.

So as mentioned yesterday, I was initially getting a message telling me I should connect the Oppo to a 4K tv with HDR. See Pic 1. It was then playing the disc in 1080p.

I have tinkered with the settings tonight in Video Setup and it is now playing in 4k.

Please see pics 2 and 3.

I noticed on Pic 4 that it says HDR format as SDR, so I went back into Video SetUp and changed the HDR Setting from Auto > Forced.

This started playing the movie in HDR10 but the colour was all wrong. See Pic 5.

So I changed it back to Auto and it is back to HDR Format : SDR and Pic 6 shows better colour.

Is there a way to watch in HDR or HDR10 without the dodgy colour output?

Pic 7 show the current Video Setup.
