I'm not 100% sure but maybe Dolby Vision conversion was not supported if the BD disc is in interlaced 1080i format. Maybe worth checking.

Im new here and have question. Oppo 203 is almost $1000 @ ebay/amazon .
I have 2 OPPO 95 but would like to upgrade to 4K.
Is OPPO 203 worth $1000 to upgrade?
Would you pay that money right now if you dont already own it?
I want player which plays most formats (avi, mpeg, flac, dvd audio...) ,and also have 4K capability .
If you have owned OPPO 93/95 do you think 203 is worth to upgrade just for playing other formats from usb/HD ? Does it plays more formats/codecs?
I have Sony UHD player for 4K movies but would prefer having one player for all my needs!

I don't know if I would at this point. I have two 203s, one stored in the closet for a rainy day. (also a 95 currently in music use). I paid MSRP for both, but I don't think I'd pay 1000 bucks for one. I think I'd move on to someone doing regular FW updates. Oppo hasn't done one in a while, and may just stop any time now. The next universal player is the Pioneer udp-lx500, if you need DVD-A. It doesn't have wi-fi so I'm not sure about streaming, although it has an ethernet hookup. Check that thread. I don't stream, so that may be my next player. If you don't really have to have DVD-A, then maybe panasonic, particularly if you are a projector owner. You might try the 'help me find a player thread above.

I'd also check the AVS classifieds if you want a 203, I've seen them sold there for less than 1000. You might get lucky.

No way, not worth the upgrade at this point... And not worth the money.... I would assume eBay prices to be plummeting soon.. Oppo appears to have completely abandoned the 203.. There hasn't been a software update in like 8 months.. Not even a maintenance one.. Nevermind one that addresses the current issues.. And owners are starting to take notice to this.. So much for Oppo's exceptional support.

I would think at some point there will be discs released that will need a update to play properly. Hopefully OPPO is still actively checking to make sure we are still current.

Out of interest... Does anybody know if such 'disc' updates are coded by MediaTek (ie: the A/V chip-set manufacturer) or by OPPO?

I recently tried to watch "Daybreakers" 4k DV disc on the Oppo 203 and Dolby Vision didn't kick in. I switched to the the cheap LG 4k player and it worked just fine.

1st: The 203 sells used on eBay for closer to $850 if you are patient. Its still a good value at that price.
If you are addicted to high res/multichannel file playback from NAS, attached storage or the like, and if you also want file and folder playback from your 4K player, the Oppo is really the best choice. If you don't want to rip and store BD and UHD movies you may not need the Oppo.

But given the feature set, the 203 is a good value at 2x the original retail price. They should have been selling them closer to that price from the start.

Adding on to what others said, if you can make backup discs and don’t actually need a disc drive, the “ChinOPPO” player may be an option. You can’t ask any additional questions here due to forum rules, but Google “M9702 Player” and follow the links to other forums where discussion about that device is allowed.

Yes, it does. I don't know about all video files, but it plays pretty much all audio ones. Check that thread and the manual is downloadable.

There are also a couple of sony universal players available. The X800M2 (no analog connections) and the X1100es (two channel analog out like the pioneer). They all play from usb, check manuals for specifics. From a premium standpoint the pioneer is a step or two above the Sony players.

Totally agree. Suppose Oppo had decided to hang around but found it necessary to raise the cost of the new 303 to $999. This new 303 would now have dynamic tone mapping and apps on board that worked with the DTM in addition to 2 HDMI inputs. How many would be willing to spring for the new player? I imagine quite a few judging by the number of people buying the 203 for well above MSRP.

for sure considering 999 is the going price for the"best" 4k players out there right now...and you know the OPPO would be so much better too.

sounds like a compatibility with the Dac problem . You can try changing the audio signal via the optical out on the OPPO's set up menu and see what sounds best. I have no issues using the optical out of the OPPO to my Bryston BDA 1 Dac.

See this AVS thread here. The Harmony Hub will work with Alexa and the Oppo is in the Logitech data base. Just be aware the hub may control the Oppo with IR.

I have Alexa, Google, Harmony Hub, mobile apps, Global Caché GC-100 , etc. and they are neat for some things but for my home theater, none of them touch my URC MX-980 remote for ease of use. YMMV.

Oppo and HDR

I am having issues with my Oppo UDP-203 playing HDR content.

Right now, I just have one HDMI (ARC) from Oppo to my new Onkyo TX-NR787. When I put in a 4k HDR disc, the panel (a Samsung HU8550 with SEK-3500) automatically maxes backlight and contract. As a fix, I have attempted to split the A & V from the Oppo using two HDMI cables - that is - one to the panel and one to the Onkyo but get no sound.

Anyone aware of a setting I could have missed somewhere? I've spend a couple of weeks and am quite frustrated.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something on your problem, but all TV should behave exactly like this. Backlight and contrast are automatically set to maximum when receives an HDR signal probably in all HDR TV.

Your TV is behaving exactly as it should do when presented with a HDR source. It needs to put the backlight and contrast to maximum in order to be able to reach the peak luminance levels demanded by HDR highlights.

My Panasonic OLED does exactly the same. The difference is that because the panel is an OLED, this has no bearing on black level, whereas I suspect you're seeing a big increase in black level on your LCD panel.

Does this mean you played a cd that is known to have emphasis applied and the dac automatically applied deemphasis? Does your dac signal in any way that it has switched into deemph mode.
Or are you just saying you have no problem playing cd´s?

I was asking a very specific question so no need to be worried about my intent.

Just a little information for you: https://wiki.hydrogenaud.io/index.ph...e=Pre-emphasis

You'll probably have to ask OPPO Tech Support for info on this. In all the years I've been dealing with the OPPO players I don't recall ever seeing a question or discussion on the handling of CDs with pre-emphasis authored in, nor on whether such flagging is available on the S/PDIF outputs.

You can use the Email Us link on OPPO's Support page for the player. Be sure to link them to the descriptive article on pre-emphasis encoding for CDs so they know what you are asking about. It would not surprise me if the player doesn't handle this at all.
