Wow, I’m not sure I’ve even put a disc in my unit yet, works so well playing off the USB I haven’t needed to.

Quick question: if I’m going HDMI out of my 203 into a Sony ST5000 sound Bar I don’t need to mess with the crossover frequency setting correct?
Since the device doing the actual D>A would take care of that and I’m not going analog out of the 203. Then there’s the part where the ST5000 and it’s accompanying sub offer zero control over crossover frequency because the all knowing all seeing Sony has been gracious enough to hardwire the Xover for me because obviously all users are going to place their gear in the same places anyways!

(No bitterness here, I swear)

Last really quick one. What’s the ohm requirement to qualify an RCA cable for use with S/PDIF out?

Guy who bought my X800 that the Oppo replaced insists on using that jack and if I remember correctly if worse comes to worse you can use an analog rca cable and possibly pull it off. I have a bunch of fancy old Monster 400 MK II cables I was going to give him a couple of. I mean the X800 doesn’t come with a S/PDIF cable and I’m certainly not going to shell out the two dollars to buy him one, lol.

Correct, in this case HDMI is your friend. Sony apparently has issues, though.

From Monoprice, on their Coaxial rated cable:

Gold plated RCA male connectors
Rubber-covered, molded connector housings
97% pure oxygen-free copper conductor
Double shielded with copper braiding
22 pF per foot capacitance
75 ohm impedance

Thank you! Sony has issues alright. Such as why enabling “enhanced” HDMI kills the sound bar display button output so anyone using their flagship ATMOS enabled sound bar is never going to see the word ATMOS anywhere but in the manual if running their player though the soundbar, LOL.
It’s the little things ya know. Sorry I should take this one to the appropriate forum.

Has anyone able to get their Macbook Pro to act as a DLNA server to the 203? I am looking at software that does this but don't know how the 203 will react.

I use the free version of serviio on a Win10 Pro machine and it works well with my 103 and 203. Serviio also offers a free version for Macs.

Modelo Especial is fairly popular in the Bay Area.

I've been to Oppo's office in Menlo Park a couple of times and it kinda reminds me of a startup, which I am intimately familiar with. And I mean that as a sincere compliment!

I never saw any schwag when I was there! Just cubes and boxes ready for pickup, the few times I have been there for my amp and players.

Devil's Canyon brewery is near my office and theirs so maybe a few growlers from there? (They do have their Full Boar Scotch Ale.)

I'll just bring a bunch of joints for everyone. Might go over better

So who of you are locals and going to line up with outside their place the day the final run of 205s goes on sale?

Not sure it would be worthwhile since they are going to fulfill internet orders and reserved pickups.

So if I was outside when the email came couldn't I place an order real quick? :-)

I could also make myself useful and deliver any local orders within say a 50 mile radius!

Question Any advantage to playing a 4K disc in my new 203>into 1080p TV ?

It seems that I saw this posted months ago somewhere on AVSForum, but I was just wondering if there is ANY potential advantage to playing a 4K UHD disc in my new Oppo 203 player>>into my existing Panasonic plasma (1080p) panel ? I have heard that it would "down res" to 1080p. Have folks tried this and with any positive PQ results ? Hey, I figure if I am buying a boxed set of discs (typically contain a 4K, Blu-ray 2K, and DVD versions), it might be worthwhile playing the 4K version until I purchase my first 4K panel.

Any idea of when the dolby vision fix firmware will be available? Dolby might as well kill any further implementation at the rate its going.

This is asked all over the forums and there is no one true answer given the variety of discs and gear that people have.

It's best if you try it yourself.

Playing the Blu-ray is the easier course. You don't have to worry about the HDR->SDR conversion setting or adjusting the target luminance.

Make sure your next display has 4k and real HDR and you won't have to worry about it then either.

Besides any potential or perceived PQ differences between the two discs, some studios are reserving the immersive audio track (Dolby Atmos or DTS:X) for the UHD Blu-ray. You might also find some additional convenience features on the latter, such as not having to wade through a gaggle of preview clips, enhanced bookmarking, etc.

I am also still using a 1080p Plasma, and here's what I've found: Most of the time, I would choose the Blu-Ray. In some cases, the 4K UHD is based on a 4K scan that is better than the older scan featured on the Blu-Ray. (I'm looking at you, Starship Troopers)

I would try both and see which one you like best. Sometimes I play the UHD and play around with the tone mapping settings, but that's just to see what they look like.

Also, most 4K combo packs only include the 4K disc and the Blu-Ray disc(s). The DVD has been omitted.

I decided to get the 203 before they're gone even though I haven't decided on a 4K panel yet. My BDP-83 has served me well for almost a decade but I was certainly happy to have a newer faster player.

I'll be buying the 4K UHD version for any movie I buy here on - my first disc is Black Panther. My experience is the Blu-ray is definitely better than the 4K UHD going into my 1080p panel. The UHD seems to auto adjust to looking dimmer and the colors aren't as deep - I've played around with some of the HDR to SDR settings but it never made it much better. I had been curious to compare the downrez to the real Blu-ray playing on my 83, but at this point I'm not going to chase it anymore. I'll probably have a 4K panel sometime in the next 6 months.
WOLVERNOLE likes this.

I find this interesting. Wasn't the reason to include a DVD so that you could watch the movie in car DVD players? I'm definitely not in that market, but I'd be surprised if those really got upgraded to BD. Seems a 4K UHD/DVD combo would be more useful for people.

I think that whole thing has been overtaken by events. Most kids I know (and young adults) would much rather watch something on their phones with headphones on than a DVD.

Um....there are “unofficial” t-shirts out there. Google is your friend.

Rondog,

I have an iMac and use Firestream DNLA server which you can purchase from the Mac App Store. It works great streaming movies (mkv files) and all audio files that OPPO 203 can support. Firestream is inexpensive and I've had good success with this macOS DNLA server.

Very simple, install plex media server. Easy to setup and your oppo will see the shares. You don't have to mess with anything in windows or your router for local access.
At most you might have to forward some ports for access outside the home.

And you have the added benefit of plex making your content available on everything else.
