ULTRA HD RESOLUTION AND HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE
  • 4K Ultra HD Video
  • The UDP-203 supports the playback of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs. Packing a resolution of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels, UHD Blu-ray delivers four times the pixels of Full HD Blu-ray. The UDP-203 is also capable of playing 4K media files and user generated content. Support for decoding the HEVC, H.264, VP9 4K, and Hi10P video codecs provides increased compatibility with user generated media.
  • High Dynamic Range
The UDP-203 supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wide Color Gamut. The enhanced resolution, refined contrast, greater brightness, and expanded color produce stunning video with unparalleled clarity and detail. In addition to supporting the HDR10 format on discs and video files, it is also capable of providing an accurate conversion of HDR to SDR for older displays, as well as conversion between various color spaces such as BT.2020, BT.709, and BT.601.
  • Dolby Vision Upgradeable
Leveraging hardware designed to support Dolby Vision, customers can expect a firmware update in early 2017 that brings Dolby Vision support to the player. Dolby Vision transforms the TV viewing experience by delivering striking highlights, brilliant colors, and deep darks never before seen on standard television screens, and OPPO is committed to bringing this exciting technology to the UDP-203.
EXPERTISE AND QUALITY
  • Reference Quality Video
The UDP-203 combines the latest technology with OPPO's many years of experience in delivering high quality video and audio. A customized quad-core video decoder/processor integrates OPPO's advanced video decoding, processing and optimization expertise.
  • High Precision Disc Loader
A high-precision, well-balanced laser optical disc loader ensures smooth and reliable playback of all types of disc media. An optimized laser mechanism to ensure super fast disc loading, strong error detection and correction.
  • Exceptional Build Quality
The UDP-203 features a brushed aluminum front panel, a rigid steel chassis and gold plated connectors. The solid build quality not only presents a sleek aesthetic, but also ensures dependable operation and reliable connection.
UNIVERSAL DISC AND FILE PLAYBACK
  • Multiple Disc Formats
The design of the UDP-203 focuses on quality playback and universal compatibility with multiple disc and file formats. In addition to the latest UHD Blu-ray, the UDP-203 supports regular Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD, DVD-Audio, SACD, and audio CD.
  • Media File Playback
The UDP-203 is equipped with two USB 3.0 ports on the back and another USB port on the front. Users can play video, music and photos from USB hard drives or thumb drives.
  • Home Network Access
Built-in 802.11ac Wi-Fi or Gigabit Ethernet connects the UDP-203 to users’ home networks, so users can easily play media files stored on computers and home servers.
HIGH RESOLUTION AUDIO
  • Lossless Audio Decoding
The UDP-203’s video performance and universal compatibility is further complemented by its support of lossless high resolution audio. The player decodes audio file formats such as AIFF, WAV, ALAC, APE and FLAC. It also directly plays Direct-Stream Digital audio files in stereo DSD64/128 or multi-channel DSD64.
  • Advanced Audio Formats
With internal decoding of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and bitstream output for object-based immersive audio formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, the UDP-203 delivers great sound for both movie soundtracks and music.
  • High Performance DAC
The UDP-203 offers 7.1-channel audio outputs for connecting to a 7.1-channel or 5.1-channel surround sound system. The 7.1-ch outputs feature "Velvet Sound" 32-bit premium digital-to-analog converters from AKM of Japan, delivering an incredible sound stage and an immersive surround experience.
VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY
  • Dual HDMI Outputs
The player features two HDMI outputs – an HDMI 2.0 port for connecting to the latest UHD TVs, projectors and A/V receivers, and an HDMI 1.4 audio port for connecting to older A/V receivers. Customers with newer 4K- and HDR-capable A/V receivers can use a full HDMI 2.0 signal path, while customers with older A/V receivers can have a split A/V setup.
  • HDMI 2.0 Input
An HDMI 2.0 input port that supports UHD resolution is available for users to connect an external streaming device. This approach affords users the flexibility to choose from a wide range of streaming devices and easily upgrade as streaming technologies evolve, while still taking advantage of the UDP-203's audio and video processing capabilities.
  • Easy Integration
Integration-friendly features such as RS-232 control, back panel IR sensor and third-party IP control make the UDP-203 a great choice for any home theater system. Coaxial and optical digital audio outputs provides backward compatibility with legacy audio components.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the firmware upgrade. The video output will be temporarily disabled once the upgrade is in progress. During this time, the front panel display of the player will show “UPGRADING”.
4. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TURN OFF THE PLAYER, UNPLUG THE POWER, OR PRESS ANY BUTTONS OTHER THAN NECESSARY TO RESPOND TO THE ON-SCREEN PROMPTS DURING THE REMAINING UPGRADE PROCESS.
5. After the upgrade is complete, the unit will turn itself off and then back on again.
6. Once you see the player’s Home Menu on your display, go to the Setup Menu and select Firmware Upgrade / Via Network in the Device Setup menu again and the player should report it already has the latest firmware. This will ensure that the player downloads and installs all parts of the firmware upgrade.
7. Check the new firmware version by going to the Setup Menu, and then select Device Setup / Firmware Information. If you notice that the firmware versions displayed do not match the versions listed in this release note, please try another method or contact us.
8. We recommend resetting the player to factory defaults after upgrading the firmware. You can do so by going to the Setup Menu / Device Setup / Reset Factory Defaults. Re-enter your customized settings as necessary after resetting.
9. Congratulations! The firmware upgrade is complete.

I think I have DH movie in my collection (streaming).

I'll try to check it out if I can.

Do you see the same issue w/out the 203 tone mapping (I realize if you do this, you can't convert the HDR>SDR) going straight HDR (using the TV, which I suppose does HDR)?

What about choosing the HD stream instead of the UHD / HDR one (setting output to 1080 presumably would play the 1080 stream...there is a setting in iTunes Movies app settings where supposedly you can set what quality you want as default, but it doesn't work in my experience).

Just wondering if it might be "less bad" if output in SDR 4K, or SDR 1080p.

Looks like compression artifacts (near black information that has very subtle gradations - like a sky, or water, only much worse (WRT compression) since it's almost black).

I see this in varying scenes on streaming titles, but usually not near as bad as what you show. It often has a green tinge to it as well.
Did you get a chance to see if you have Deepwater Horizon to check this scene for me? My own reply with further testing quoted below...

OK, done some more fiddling...

The disc version using tone mapping does still have artefacts, but not nearly as noticeable. Have to get up close to the screen, but they're there.

If I force HDR to my PJ, I can't see any artefacts. Of course, picture not right since I don't have any curves loaded. But it's the same going HDR all the way with the TV.

If I force SDR from the ATV, it's better than using tone mapping, but still there - worse than disc with tone mapping, but better than HDR coming out of the ATV. Of course, the ATV is doing its own tone mapping in this case to some unknown values. But way less noticeable artefacts than using Oppo tone mapping. I played with various iTunes Store settings and forcing 1080p, and an sdr 1080p picture looked the same as the 4k version with ATV outputting SDR. Couldn't be sure this was using a different stream though, or just scaling the 4k one.

If I use Force HDR with an ATV HDR signal, again, no artefacts.

Since I don't see the problem using HDR all the way, I guess that rules out compression artefacts at source, although the effect certainly looks like that. This is probably a challenging scene, with lots of smoke and mist moving around in the dark, but it sure does look horrible with Oppo tone mapping.

I don't think it's a gamma issue, since its pretty obvious at any gamma on PJ and TV. The TV has been recently calibrated, the PJ about 1,000 hours ago. I do intend doing an Autocal for gamma soon though!

Love someone else to confirm this...

Been getting killed by work for months... Last Jedi 4k disc finally arrives today... so I figure well my oppo is up to date and my x940e is up to date... SURELY by now they will have worked this DV BS out.

NOPE???!!?

Nothing by orange flickery-ness.

Sigh.

I assume it's still "being worked on" but I skimmed this thread back 5 pages and don't see anything about it so I guess there isn't any recent movement. Is there some way I can get the oppo to play vanilla hdr10 in the meantime?

Thanks all!

Disc play will be HDR10 automatically if your display is not DV capable (or in this case not DV capable as far as the 203 is concerned).

Until Oppo releases an update that supports the “Sony” Dolby Vision profile, I would just set the Oppo to “force” HDR output.

To do this, go to the 203’s Setup menu and under “Video Output Setup”, set “HDR” to “Forced”. Then under “Device Setup”, make sure “Standby Mode” is set to “Energy Efficient”. Then power cycle the 203.

This setting will remain in effect until you decide to change it back.

When you want to return to support for Dolby Vision, repeat the steps above, but returning the “HDR” setting to “Auto”.

Hope this helps...

This sounds like a handshake failure and/or a cable problem. Are you using certified premium cables? Have you checked to make sure if you are that one doesn't need to be reseated?

I suppose I want my cake and be able to eat it too.

What you describe will work, but don't I have to manually change the aspect setting on the Oppo if I want to change my lens position for 16:9 to avoid taking a resolution hit? I will never be permanently zoomed.

I want to be able to leave the Oppo at 16:9 Wide/ Auto and use the motorized lens to switch between 16:9 and 2.35. And then have a 'zoom' button that will toggle displaying 16:9 properly for when I need to see a menu while zooming and don't want to use the motorized lens on the projector.

Does that make sense?

You can do it somewhat with the existing zoom function but there are so many to page through when using 16:9 Wide/ Auto that it's a bit of a PITA.
In that case you set the Oppo to 21:9 Moveable. Thats for A lens/Motorized Sled users. This should give you what you want. Check out the 2.35 CIH forum here.

You can use 21:9 Cropped Aspect Ratio for this, along with the Zoom button to specify whether the content you want to see at the moment is 21:9 or 16:9.

When you select 16:9 with the Zoom button your 16:9 content frame will be displayed inside the 21:9 frame you already have set up. That is, with the projector zoomed in as you describe the 16:9 content will fill your screen top to bottom and will be centered on the screen left to right with black bars on either side.

Thanks for these detailed explanations Bob. Does this 21:9 benefit of placing the OSD and menus within the scope frame work with an ATV through the HDMI input. In other word, when watching a 21:9 movie on iTunes, will the Oppo somehow scale the ATV home screen and menus within the scope height?

Thanks,

Pip

I’ve had the trouble since day one with my 103 even after a battery change and the 103 remote was supposed to be better than the 93’s remote. Oppo players have been the best I have owned, but the included remotes are crap. Takes several button pushes to turn the player on or accomplish any function. Really hope for nearly $600 I can finally get a excellent Oppo player with a worthy remote.
If you are having that kind of trouble with the 103 remote, odds are there is something in your environment which is interfering.

For example, if you have a 3D display with active glasses that sync via an IR transmitter on the TV, that transmitter can be flooding the room with IR making it harder for the player to see the IR coming from the remote.

Nope. The OPPO is not rendering those so it can not alter their location.

This is not a Dolby Vision compatibility problem. You have some other fault in your setup. Most likely would be the HDMI cables.

Bob,

Would you be able to get a word out to the Oppo engineers to add another aspect ratio option for 21:9? Specifically, Netflix shows that are displayed in 2:1 or "Univisium" (shows like House of Cards, Stranger Things, Star Trek: Discovery, Transparent, Travelers are in this AR).

Unless I am mistaken and I can already switch to that AR using the Oppo "Zoom" button + 21:9 aspect ratio.

I'm curious about why I should use "HDMI in" for my Roku, as contrasted to using the switcher in my 2018 Denon X8500W with all the latest HDMI/HDCP codecs. I'm using a JVC RS600 with the custom HDR curves and an HD Fury to fool the JVC into enabling the dynamic iris. I can see why I would have used the "HDMI in" before I added those tweaks to the PJ; back when the "strip metadata" feature was active, and now with "SDR BT2020", but since I do have those tweaks, it doesn't seem to me that I gain anything by using "HDMI in". Am I wrong?

Originally the 2.35 option was only because we had 4x3 sdtv and 16x9 hdtv and the DVD players were trying for compatibility for both. Then us A lens user found we could exploit this That 1.33x scaling option just so happened to work for expanding 16x9 to 2.35 as it did the 4x3(12x9) to 16x9. Some here have been battling with the studios for over a decade to try to get anamorphic 21:9 on the Blu-ray or UHDBR. It’s actually built into the spec. But to no avail. It would be wonderful if we could get a 18:9 option but unless Oppo goes Lumagen it’s not gonna happen.

I was just hoping to eliminate the window-boxed content when streaming Netflix content. Shows like Stranger Things, Altered Carbon, etc. are displayed with black bars at top/bottom and left/right. I would like to be able to zoom past the top/bottom bars and present those shows with just the pillar-boxes.

I know. There’s enough 2.00 content now that I’ve finally loaded a zoom slot with that AR. All the content you mention and Jurassic World and even the latest Transformers. With all the aspect changes I just watched it CIH. But now I like it cropped to 2.00 as I retain most of the picture and lose the annoying jumps in AR between 1.78, 1.85, 1.90 and 2.00.

A reminder: The FASTEST way to get feature suggestions to OPPO is to use the Email Us link on OPPO's support page for the player:

https://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-udp-203/blu-ray-udp-203-Support.aspx

-------------------------

There are a surprisingly large number of content aspect ratios out there. So you'd pretty much need a custom setting to handle them all -- assuming the video scaler can even be programmed for that.

If you are curious, here's a database listing just of content on Blu-ray discs, sorted by Aspect Ratio:

I'm using the cable that oppo included in the box iirc. The cable would work beautifully with hdr10 and not with dv?

Running the oppo and my 4k atv to the sony ST5000 and from there to the x940e. Dolby Vision works fine from the ATV.

And I should clarify that it's not "nothing" but orange flickeryness. But that the yellow star wars text was quite orange and that the picture in general looks off hue and I see flickers here and there throughout.

I just created a third lens memory in the JVC projector for Netflix. Just a single button on the JVC remote calls it. :)

Yes, of course that is always an option, but I really enjoy being able to hit 'zoom' on the oppo and be able to instantly flip between 2.35:1 and 16:9. I wanted you avoid using the mechanical lens memory of the JVC
