I have compared the K8500 to a Philips BPD7501. The k8500 is clearly better.

(Not willing to chuck my widescreen DVD collection just yet.)
The X800 will auto upscale standard DVD's to 1080p and the image looks great. I watched Alice in Wonderland last night (DVD)

My cables arrived from Monoprice yesterday. I still cannot get audio handshake to work between HDMI port 2 on the Sony and my receiver. I have gone through all the audio options on the receiver and X800, but cannot find a combination that provides a handshake to pass audio. My receiver will flash the message "NOT SUPPORT" briefly when the X800 attempts to connect, but it never establishes a connection.

The receiver is a Pioneer Elite 94TXH from 2008. The HDMI ports are version 1.3a, while the Sony states it requires HDMI 1.4 for its audio only HDMI 2 port. Could that be what is causing my issue? I've never experienced any issues with other devices I have connected to this AVR via HDMI -- a Panasonic BD player, an older Sony BD player (now in our master bedroom), an Oppo 980H DVD player, two different Roku units, including a Roku Premiere, and a Comcast Xfinity X1 cable box.

For now, I am using the digital coax audio port between the X800 and the AVR so I can get audio. I do not want this to be a permanent solution, though, as this connection does not support the high resolution audio formats such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD-Master, which the AVR supports and I use all the time with my BD player. If I cannot get the audio to work via HDMI port 2, a new AVR may be in my future sooner than I had planned.

That's strange, when did you place your order? I originally ordered on Amazon back on 2/23 thinking it would ship the following week. When it became apparent it wasn't shipping anytime soon (various posts in this thread were speculating sometime in late April or May), I went ahead and ordered on Best Buy's website. In fact, this was at 1:45AM ET this morning, and I just got the shipped email with tracking number at 10:45AM ET...

Perhaps its the DC's out on the west coast? Seemed these things were available over there first, so maybe they need to re-stock now?

Just ordered my unit from Best Buy with overnight shipping *crossing fingers*

Can anyone answer the questions below please?

* Can you play 4K/UHD/Atmos on VUDU with this player?

* What is the complete list of free UHDs from Sony on the offer? The website doesn't list them without putting a code in first.

* Any reason why to choose this player over waiting for Xbox One S to receive Atmos/DTS:X feature?

This has got to be it, did you ever try just connect the player to the TV with one wire and see if you get sound from your TV speakers?

Yes, if I run a HDMI cable from HDMI port 2 on the Sony directly to the display, I do get audio -- but no video, of course. That proves that HDMI port 2 on the X800 is not defective.

Are the HDMI ports on your AVR version 1.4 or higher? If so, I agree this is most likely the issue. It's a shame, though, as I still really like the receiver, and do not plan on adding height speakers in my family room for Dolby Atmos, so Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD-Master are all I really need.

Oh, well, I guess 8+ years for a AVR is pretty ancient these days.

You can also plug the HDMI to port 1 and get both video and sound at the same time, but through your tv speakers. But clearly, your AVR ports are outdated and needs upgrading. Wish I could sell you my 5.1 Receiver, you don't live that far from me lols...

Running both video and audio to the display via HDMI 1 doesn't really buy me anything, as I still would not be able to get Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD-Master audio. The digital coax audio connection between the X800 and my AVR gets me Dolby Digital and DTS lossy audio, which is as good as it gets without HDMI audio support. I have that working now while I consider my options for a new AVR.

Quick question for the ones who have gotten their redemption code: What serial number did you use to register? I used the number that was on the holographic sticker on the time of the box. Was I supposed to use the 7 digit number on the back of the player instead? It said the registration was successful but I never got an email. I just want to verify what number I need before dropping a line to the escalation email address that was provided when I registered. Thanks!

Thank you!

So no UHD/Atmos on VUDU?! Why is it nigh impossible to find ONE device that will play UHD discs and UHD/Atmos Vudu? My ROKU Premier + can stream 4K and Atmos for via VUDU or Plex for $99 but these $300 players can't do the same thing..

This physical vs streaming media differences are a blasted mess

Sony just dropped in their old Vudu app that has being used by older Sony BDPs. Its anyone's guess why that couldn't be upgraded to support 4K.

Given they did use the old Vudu app for this player .. its odd why the rest of the older apps didn't come along too, such as Youtube, Cracke, Playstation video ...

Thanks a lot! Email is sent. Looks like I got a relatively fresh unit. Assuming they started at 1000001, I've got #1371. Neat.

@ Scott M, Make sure you have the latest firmware update installed for your AV receiver. It's worth a try before dumping the X800 or buying a new receiver.

What's crazy is that UHD and Atmos have been out for a few years now but it still feels like Month 1 in several aspects. I just invested in a new 4K/HDR TV and Atmos system but trying to actually play the content that I bought is a pain. #FirstWorldProblems

The Pioneer 94 can't be upgraded online, must be sent to an authorized center. I had the same receiver and had to send it exactly for the same reason : Could not handshake with my Toshiba HDVD player. I have no idea if Pioneer will still fix it, though.

I was so happy without HDR...

Don't know if the impending M8500 will be any better?
The x800 doesnt not have the "Dolby D Compatible Output" option which is what you are looking for. This converts DTS to DD5.1 on the fly. (The Sony BDP-S6700 does for instance). The x800 is only able to converts DTS/Dolby Digital to multi channel PCM.

So unless you're Sonos Soundbar can accept a multi channel PCM input, then you'll need to find alternative solutions.

Vudu is notoriously slow at updating its apps across devices. On top of that, it's possible that they have exclusivity agreements with certain manufacturers regarding who gets UHD capabilities.

Thanks for the suggestion. The firmware is already up to date (see below), as is the Sony X800's firmware.

Actually, the firmware can be updated without taking it to a service center. I upgraded the firmware about a month ago, with some assistance from AVS Forum member Legairre Radden, anticipating that I would be adding a UHD player in the near future. The upgrade involves burning the firmware to a CD-R and playing it back from a CD/DVD/BD player via a toslink digital optical connection while the receiver is placed in an update mode. It worked like a charm.
slimoli and CaptinCrunch like this.

Thanks for the list. So no Sony devices are on there. So its not really surprising the x800 didn't make the cut. If anything, I would expect Sony's Android TV line to get it first.

that list is several months old. Vudu did say more devices would be coming that have access to Vudu 4k output. But so far they have been extremely slow adding them.

I'm more concerned with them adding hdr10 to their titles. Since I have a Roku Ultra which already has access to the Vudu 4k content.
