Thanks very much for trying to help. I had a very nice ‘surprise’ just a few minutes ago.

I had left the player unplugged from power overnight, for about 12 hours and, when I turned it back on just a few minutes ago, there popped up the notification that a new firmware was available. It took less than five minutes to update to version 0178 via the Internet.

Yesterday I had spent a couple of hours with Sony support on the chat and phone - support from the Philippines - who made me try all kind of basic troubleshooting, including unplugging the player for two minutes, to no avail. They wanted me to send in the player for an exchange, but of course I could not do so because my player is region-free modified. In the end Sony decided to send me the new firmware on a CD. I am not sure if the firmware could be installed directly from the disc or had to be transferred again to a USB stick (I don’t have a disc drive any longer).

In any case, with the new firmware on board I am getting ready to watch the Region B Blu-ray of La Strada by Fellini, which just arrived yesterday from Amazon.co.uk.

Thanks, again!

If you were able to unzip the archive, that pretty much means that it's not corrupt.

I can't test the download myself, as I have already received the update over-the-air.

By the way, I checked: the "buda" directory is created by BluRay players for BD Live (internet content) purposes. It's harmless.

Sorry that I was of no help.

Glad that, ultimately, you didn't need it.

Just out of curiosity, are there any firmware differences between regular players and region-free modified ones?

No , doesn’t appear so. I think the mod to make them region free is something outside of the customer-installable code (not sure if it’s something physical like an eeprom or just another layer of software/bootloder etc).

Just sitting down to watch my 40th Anniversary Dam Busters BluRay that arrived from Amazon.co.uk this week :-)

You tried to help, and that's what really matters.

From what I've read, there seem to be two types of region-free modifications for Blu-ray players:

(i) Software modifications in which a custom firmware is loaded on the player. Subsequently updating the firmware from the manufacturer would invalidate the region-free features.

(ii) Hardware modifications (ICOS) which support firmware updates from the manufacturer of the player.

Mine - UBP-X800 and BDP-S6700 - are of the latter type. If you would like additional details about where I bought mine, please PM me.

Having the exact same problem with my Yamaha RX-A1020. No DSD until I power cycle the receiver. So weird. I've never had this issue before with an SACD player. Did you ever find a better solution?

My Favorite Streamer

I know that the streaming capabilities of the UBP-X800 were briefly discussed in much earlier posts, but I just have to throw in my proverbial two cents. I've recently been trying out many of the current streaming boxes that do 4K/HDR; Roku, Nvidia Shield, Fire TV, Apple TV 4K and the built-in apps on my Sony TV.

Due to various combinations of cost, user interface, available apps, connection problems and picture quality, I haven't been completely happy with any of them. I've realized that instead of spending money on a new streamer, that my X800 does 90% of what I'm looking for and does it all really well. The apps I use most often have always been Netflix, Amazon Video, YouTube and Pandora, all available on the X800. I can also subscribe to and watch Showtime and HBO through the Amazon app. The apps load quickly, are stable and look great. There are a couple of apps not available that I still use my Apple TV for.

I purchased the player originally because I wanted a really good disc player. I didn't know at the time that I was also getting such a great streamer!

The streaming on it works fine if you don't mind not having all the artwork and bells and whistles Plex or Kodi provide. My last streaming player could do all that but didn't support either one so I just named all my files to make it easy to find the latest episodes. It COULD do a Plex like layout but you had to name everything just so and download artwork and all that that Plex or Kodi does automatically if you follow the naming conventions which is easy with some of the auto naming programs out there for free. Since I discovered Plex and how to set thing up properly that's what I use now, either in my Roku Ultra 4 or my Android media box.
Other then that like I said just name it in a way that makes it easy to find what you want and use the Sony, it seams to be able to play most formats just fine.

Un fortunately there are no streamers amazon , roku, sheild, atv4k, or bd, uhd players that stream all hdr, hdr10, dolby vision , atmos and dtsx. There are a few tvs that do and game consoles. But the incompatability issues are totally ridiculous. Not mentioning some receiver and costly soundbars.

Plus the X800 might stream from netflix well, but foe some reason Sony has it converting the DD+ audio to DD.

First question, how are you finding HDR content in YouTube?

Search for HDR... Some content says it's HDR when it isn't but there is a fairly small amount of actual HDR content on Youtube.

Also wanted to say, really hope this new firmware stops my damn player from locking up every other 4K disc that I play. Played Wonder Woman last week no issue. But last night (prior to me installing the update) Close Encounters locked up my player about an hour or so into the movie. At least this time unlike all the other times it had the decency to shut off after a moment so that I didn't have to fish my hand to the back of my panamax to unplug it... I swear, 2 things that should never be done in a modern blu ray player are: hardwiring the power cord to the unit and not having a means to force a reboot. These are 2 issues that Sony knew to not have in many of their older players. It is bewildering to me that in this relatively high end player that they would goof on those 2 points. I really can't wait for next year's batch of players. Hopefully playback reliability will be like, you know, RELIABLE and also hopefully DV will be in tow.

Subscribe to this channel, so that when you open in the X800, you can easily go to your subscriptions and then play from there.

Your post is very useful - I am looking for exactly the same - a streamer which does 90% of what I need.
Question - Does the sony have VUDU app? How does it handle the video and audio of UHD movies on VUDU which are DV (which the Sony does not play and in my case I have a Sony projector which can only play HDR10) and the Audio which is ATMOS?
In other words if you pay a UHD movie with Dolby Vision and ATMOS from VUDU streaming service can you get 4K (non HDR) and Dolby ATMOS audio?
Thanks in advance - I hope you can help me chuck my Roku and get a Sony UHD BD Player.

Yes it does have the VUDU app but unfortunately it does not support UHD or ATMOS.

I have the JVC RS500 projector and Vizio P series TV, both connected to my X800 through a Pioneer Elite AVR. I used to get HDR on YouTube until recently. Not sure if it is a recent issue with my AVR (not likely), or is it the latest X800 firmware update.

Good Day All,
I am a proud new owner of the X800 and a JVC RS420.
I like what the X800 does right out of the box.
I do have one question, looking for some guidance.
I think that I am forcing 4.4.4 from the X800, but when playing a UHD disc, the RS420 indicates 8 bit.
I thought that I should see 10 bit, or am I off.
Thanks,
Russ

Re: the streamer talk - new Rokus are likely incoming. I was in walmart recently and last years models were reduced in price to discontinue.
The new ones should of course decode more audio/video. Maybe atmos etc.

My Roku Ultra running plex is a wonderful experience.

Since the last update, video looks terrible from my X800. Light bleed along the left and right edges, light bleed on dark scenes, and a totally washed out picture overall. Up until now, I have had no issues.

Sony UBP-X800 HDMI 1------> Sony XBR65X850C HDMI 1 Enhanced format, using an Amazon Certified Premium HDMI cable.
Sony UBP-X800 HDMI 2------> Sony STR-DN860

I first noticed this watching a Blu-ray of the Big Sick from RedBox (my wife's choice), the 4K HDR version of Wonder Woman (my choice) and then the Blu-ray of Megan Leavey, also from RedBox. Then I noticed it on Netflix (streaming from the X800). I tried changing the Picture Mode on the TV (Custom, HDR, Cinema home, etc.). Nothing worked. I then switched over to the Netflix app on my TV and the picture was very good using any of the Picture Modes.

Something changed since the update. At first I was concerned it was the TV. But after changing to the TV app, I'm more convinced it's from the X800 update. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I have been able to force a reboot by holding down the power button for 10 seconds when it freezes. It seems like a long time that I have to hold it down for. This has worked for me so maybe it will work for you.

I've tried that. That was the method for the old sony player I had. Hold it down for 10-15 seconds to force a reboot. I've never been able to do that on the X800, though.

The X800 does support Atmos from Vudu. I had no problem getting Atmos with the HDX Atmos test videos on Vudu.
Only reason I could think of why you are getting atmos is bc you have an OLED or DV capable TV? On content I know has Atmos is converted to DD+ bc my tv only handles HDR10. So im guessing the player for me never plays the DV/Atmos file,.only regular old HDX with DD+. Or I could be wrong. Have you tried any other titles besides the test files and still got Atmos?
