There have been plenty of faulty discs. IIRC, the Mag 7 is a 100 gig disc and some of those have been wonky, on the flip side players have had some issues with them (Oppo for one).
Interesting, I'll have to try it again as well as a few others. How do you know the size of the discs? Have a link by chance? I'd love to know which ones to watch out for when I buy them. Thanks in advance!

The list may be old, but as far as I know, it is still accurate. I don't know of any additional devices that have gained Vudu UHD capabilities since it was last updated (aside from the new 2017 TV models starting to come out).

Hey Guys; Just a quick post. Enjoyed the Oppo 203 for a couple of months now, but brought home the x800 this afternoon from BB. Just an experiment really on my part to compare & evaluate the 2 players. When it comes to overall PQ & clarity, the Sony wins hands down! However, w/so many options on the Oppo, & a very nice presentation, it can become a tough decision. BTW, a SonyX930D.

I'm sure everyone will welcome you're opinions on the player, especially folks considering this player over say the Oppo or others. Be also interested on how it works with you're 930D. Some people did report some strange behavior with some 2016 Sony TVs (mainly 800D and 850D) not being able to detect the players HDR signal, or the video signal dropping when the show ends in Netflix, or returning to the main player home screen.

I ordered my X800 on Monday from BB,, Had a $100 gift certificate from Christmas, they say in store delivery on Wednesday? That is relatively fast, but if it takes longer that is OK. My Sony 65" 930C should work great with the X800! However I do not own any 4K UHD disk,, so I need to first figure out what 2 disk I will get for free,, then purchase another different one for testing.. I am a BIG 3D fan and the X800 does play 3D disk,, but I will need to keep my existing $99 Sony player as it will do 2D to 3D conversion,, something I need for my 425 Plus collection of non 3D movies!! For me it is a SHAME that something so simple as adding 3D capabilities to a TV set have been abandoned.. Going to see King Kong on Friday in IMAX and "YES" in 3D!!!! :-)

Thanks.

I impulse-bought an X800 today.

It seems to work well with DVDs. The artifacts that I see appear to be the inevitable compression ones. Since the X800 has an "original" output setting, I tried that as well. The upscaling of my Samsung KS8000 gave about the same image as using the X800 to go to 4k.

I haven't exercised it much yet, but I think that I'll prefer it to the Samsung UBD-K8500 or Philips BDP7501.

3- After the firmware update, the Sony now recognizes HDR on the disc, but shows in its display "HDR-SDR" and in the Options menu has the slider bar, as if it's sending an HDR signal to a non-HDR capable display. Color is more saturated, but not true HDR. The Samsung player, same cables, same AVR, works fine.

4- Tried connecting the x800 directly to the TV input, not going through the receiver, and the disc now plays correctly. I would attribute this to the cables, but they are certified 18gb, and again, the Samsung player works correctly through the receiver.

So, the problem seems to be some incompatibility between the Sony at 4k/60p and the Yamaha AVR. I will keep the x800, as everything else about it is better than the Samsung: quiet, smooth disc operation, SACD and DVD-Audio compatibility, handles hi-res DNLA files from my music server well. Streaming will get there with future updates, but I use the LG TV apps for streaming anyway.

I have ordered new certified cables just in case there's something wrong with the current ones, and will again try going through the AVR when I receive them.
I just bought an X800. It is connected to a Yamaha TSR-5810 (same as RX-V581), which is connected to the ARC port on a Samsung KS8000. (Using two Omars 1.5m cables, 27gbps claimed.) The HDMI passthrough on the TSR-5810 is set to Mode 1, which is required for some of the higher bandwidth formats.

Billy Lynn's plays in HDR at 4k/60p.

I doubt that this proves that the cables are the culprits, but if you like anecdotal evidence...

APW; No, just works fine w/my SonyX930D. For $300, really beats the pants over the Oppo IMO, although many features unavailable on the Sony, which I really like on the Oppo. To me, it's all about PQ, & the x800 has it! Take Care!

Amazon and Netflix seem to be playing fine tonight, issue the other day could have been an Amazon problem I guess.

Already had two Sony net services updates today, still dont see what that does.

I've had the Sony UBP-X800 since Monday. I have it connected to my Denon AVR-x2300w via Cinnamon HDMI cable, which then routes out via another Cinnamon HDMI cable to my LG OLED65B6P.

So far so good, but it was a pain to figure out how to get Dolby Atmos out of this thing. You have to turn BD Mix OFF. Why Dolby Atmos isn't enabled right out of the box is beyond me, the average consumer would never figure that out.

The only issued I have is that when playing some UBDs such as Pacific Rim and Star Trek Into Darkness, when the movie is playing the Chapter Number will appear on screen during a change. Such as Chapter 4(15). It's very annoying. Has anybody encountered this issue? Is there a fix? It takes you out of the movie big time.

Hmm ... you could try turning off "auto display" under system settings.

What kind of features are you referring to on the Oppo that the Sony lacks?

It turns out the cables were fine. The key is changing the HDMI passthrough setting on Yamaha receivers from the default mode 2 to mode 1.

So I've watched a handful of movies so far on the X800, and overall I'm pleased with the PQ. Definitely better than the Samsung K8500 (which I sold on Craigslist), and on par with the Panasonic 900 (that I returned). However, I still give the edge at this point to the Oppo 203. I feel the Oppo does a slightly better job with balancing specular highlights with shadow detail on screen at the same time. On most scenes you would never tell the difference, but on some movies/scenes (like Pacific Rim 4K), I feel like the Oppo fleshes out a bit more shadow detail. Again, probably too close for most people to notice. And given the fact that the Sony is only $300, I would highly recommend to any potential buyer looking to get into the 4K Bluray game. I have the privilege of owning both, and like both players a lot (especially since they both play DVD-Audio and SACDs). Just my 2 cents..

I'd say that's a fair comparison. I had an Oppo for about four days but never really got to judge the picture quality because it was just too glitchy. I've never had a player repeatedly hard lock like it did. The Sony by comparison has mostly just worked. And I say mostly because the one audio sync issue I had was probably the disc.

The Oppo was built like a tank (probably so you can hit it with a hammer when it locks up) but the Sony UHD player surprised me with its build quality considering how plastic my 6500 is.

My only complaints about the Sony:

I wish there was more information on what their secret sauce actually does when you turn HDR off. If the Oppo gets their strip metadata function past beta that could be very useful for projector owners.

I intend to keep my Sony 6500 installed (mostly to save wear and tear on the UHD player but also because there appears to be some slight difference in how standard Blu-rays are displayed between it and the new player) and Sony should have anticipated that desire and given the 800 different remote codes.

Otherwise I'm quite pleased... Especially for the price. I watched my free copy of Angry Birds last night and while the movie was mediocre the picture quality was pretty amazing even on JUST an E Shift projector.

Still a few glitches with my player. Over the course of a week I've had 3 occurrences where either the video went into a flashing on and off mode or the video went out and the sound 'flashed' on and off. The first instance took quite a bit to reset. I ended up unplugging the unit for 1/2 hr to reset it as a 5-10 minute unplug didn't work. The second video flash was reset by just shutting the player down and restarting the Netflix show. The third instance that involved a sound issue required a quick unplug to reset.

I have the player set up with HDMI 1 out to TV and HDMI 2 to my receiver. Not sure if the issue is just an HDMI handshake thing or what. The only commonality I have noticed is that it seems to occur when HDR switches on.....

PQ still remains great so hopefully these little annoyances will work themselves out..

Sounds like cable issue. Running certified 18Ghz cables?

Yeah. I'd definitely look at the cables if you only see glitches when the bandwidth requirements increase.

Thanks. I have 18 Gbps cables, but not seeing 'certified' anywhere. I'll place a Monoprice order and see if different cabling helps.

Off the top of my head: HDMI input (still a work in progress), SMB network streaming, strip metadata (still a work in progress), easy region-free mods, complete control over video output.

For us non HDR projector owners has anyone carried out a comparison of how the white crushing Oppo experimental strip metadata compares pic wise to the Sonys 'unique' HDR to SDR non BT2020 conversion (I'm told an HDFury in the chain doesn't help- unlike for the Panny900 where it works superbly well)

Been awhile since I had that one, but doesn't it only have Youtube and Netflix? if so, and you care, the Sony currently has Vudu and Amazon.

Other than that, the Sony probably plays a few odd file formats.

Yeah only Youtube and Netflix. I would definitely like to have Amazon, but it's not really a deal breaker. I'm in no way dissatisfied with the Philips just more or less curious about the Sony.
