I don't have any 4K discs and I wasn't about to pay the brick and mortar prices, so I was only able to test with standard/3D Blu-rays and the PQ was very good. I haven't really run it through its paces, but so far so good.

For the money, it does a good enough job playing HRA files and discs and large MKVs and the like. That being said, if that type of playback is important to you, and it is for me, OPPO is still best in class. The interface and network abilities are far superior to the Sony. We all know the OPPO 203 is suffering from growing pains, so that made it a non-option for me since I already own the 103D which can play more file types without restriction than the 203 can. I think the X800 can form a good partnership with my existing media player for the foreseeable future. I'm really rolling the dice that one day Sony will include more of their video streaming apps on it, but if it doesn't happen, then so be it.

I've had a few minor issues with the Netflix app not consistently streaming in HDR. Sometimes it will turn on, sometimes it wont. And I've had the player lock up once when reading a USB drive with large files on it. But I'm sure those bugs will get ironed out.
It's never a good thing to stack components ever.

Can anyone confirm if the "auto-power-off" feature can be disabled/turned OFF so the player will stay fully powered ON even if it sits idle for a while? This is important to me and my Harmony remote

Thanks!

No it can't.

However, its probably worth mentioning the "secret" workaround. If you never want the player to turn off on its own there is one thing you can do. You need to insert a USB thumb drive into the player and the player should remain on.

I have done the same before investing in a rack. The rule is if you can touch the component and it is hot to the touch then it should have better ventilation.

Search the thread, if you like.

Posters have had trouble getting the HD Fury to play with the UBP-X800, as regards getting the extended color range in SDR.

Sony lists the weight as 8.44 lb (3.8 kg).

Samsung specs their UBD-K8500 at 4.19 lb (1.90 kg).

Philips BPD7501, 3.53 lb (1.60 kg).

The Sony has the lowest price per pound.

(I have tried all three. The Sony is by far the quietest in operation.)

I have a quick sound question. I will be running HDMI 1 video straight to my Samsung KS8000 and HDMI 2 audio to my Yamaha RX-V675. Sometimes my wife doesn't watch movies with the surround sound system, just the TV. With the Yamaha off (in standby) will the Sony UBP-X800 automatically send the audio to the TV through HDMI 1 if the HDMI audio settings in System Settings is set to "Auto" and it detects the receiver is off/in standby? Thanks in advance!

Really? Don't you need a USB drive inserted anyway for BD Live use? This has been the case for years with the Sony BD players.

There is no hardware mod for Sony. Even if there was a software mod, it cannot be discussed at AVS.

I have a Yamaha 3060, but if the 675 is the same, you'll need to make sure that you have hdmi set to pass-through, and that when the yamaha is turned off the input is on the input you use for your x800; otherwise the yamaha will not detect an input. At least, that's the way the 3060 works...

I think they are similar. My issue is the 675 won't pass through newer 4K video, so I'm running the video straight to the TV. Still want the second HDMI to run audio to the receiver, unless I'm not using it. The manual for the X800 said if the HDMI audio settings are set to auto, if it doesn't detect an HDMI connection, it will automatically pass audio through the HDMI 1 to the TV which would be great. Hoping if the receiver is off and in standby mode, the X800 will not detect a connection and pass the audio to HDMI 1. But you reminded me that the input has to be correctly set on the 675 when in standby, so maybe ensuring the input is set to something else will tell the X800 there's no connection. I guess I'll have to try some trial and error. The only option would be to use the digital coax for audio, which would be less desirable. Thanks!

My first impressions with this player is that it is definitely better than the Samsung. Faster and quieter but I have noticed only 2 issues so far. The first movie I popped in was Angry Birds 4K and the image was so clear and vibrant I had to turn off dynamic contrast that was on low with the Samsung player. However when loading Angry Birds the signal dropped out and I was able to hit the home button and reload the disc and played fine after that. There were times I thought something was wrong with the player messing with the picture but then realized I was actually seeing details I never noticed before. The opening scene where Red delivers the cake I thought there was a haloing around him until I noticed that it was the sun reflecting off him and all the other highlights I have never noticed before but were so apparent now.

My only other issue which I am still experimenting with is judder of some sort that I also never noticed with the Samsung but I am catching glimpses of now. Not sure if it is the player or the way my TV is displaying the picture from the player. I left everything set to auto. So far I have noticed this in Angry Birds and Pacific Rim. I haven't noticed any banding or any other negative effect and it may be my imagination but I truly feel I get better audio from this player too. Pacific Rim looked better on this player and I felt packed more of a wallop audio wise too.

So, so far I am very pleased and happy with this player. The judder is not jarring or bad but just something that catches my eye for a second. It may also be a normal part of the movie I am interpreting wrong now that I am rewatching these movies and inspecting every little detail to compare to the Samsung. The Samsung is gone so I cannot even try to do a comparison to see if I can still catch it on the same scenes on that player. I will keep an eye on it though maybe try changing some settings though I am not sure which I should really mess with.

Yep, they only discuss Oppo hardware mods because the company doesn't care if you use them with their players. Firmware mods are completely different animal. There is no hardware-based region-free modification available for the Sony.

I've seen where people are discussing the software mods and hardware mods there. Heck, I even used the software mods for my two Oppos. Didn't feel like pfaffing about with the hardware route.

Anyway. A search online will find the answers for the Sony (and others).

Can you describe the judder you are seeing in more detail ? Is this motion judder or something else? Have you tried other content on the player at different frame rates. Tried turning off 24p output?

And SW mod discussion there is dealt with the same as it was here... You act like they get to have SW discussions and these threads do not, which is false.

It was totally fluke finding this workaround. Just happened to leave a USB stick in the player and was surprised it never shut itself down after 8 hours !

Hmm... I think BestBuy actually has stock locally now. I am seeing that the X800 is available for pickup today at several of the BestBuys I pass on the way home. I think I might be picking one up this evening.

Ordered mine from Crutchfield. Have a little over $100 in rewards points from them that I'll use up on this. Will replace my Samsung and put it in the secondary setup. Can't wait to do a comparison between the Sony and the Samsung.
