I thought Vudu was pretty clear that the Sony would not be getting UHD.

It can, however, play ATMOS as I recall. Try out the ATMOS demos (free) on Vudu. Trouble is, none of the movies with ATMOS have it, since they don't seem to enable that EXCEPT on a player (ie, not this Sony) for which they have provided a UHD capable VUDU app.

On the x800 I would set it for 4:2:2 and deep color on auto. On the tv leave it alone and see what you think when watching a movie. If it looks good to you then you’re set. You can follow the ratings.com settings for your model if you want a little more tweaking and see what happens.

I'll recheck VUDU on the x800.

No ATMOS for movies that do have it.

Edit: Apparently won't be on the new x700 either. VUDU says its some security thing missing on the Sony's.

You guys think these cables are simply incompatible with this player or has sony just made a faulty HDMI port?

More details: tried multiple TV ports, happens with Discs, streaming and even the basic menu screen. It's definitely the cables themselves or the HDMI port on the back of the player.

Thanks for the help!
Do you have the HDMI ports set to enhanced in the tv settings? If not do that, if so it must be the cables.

Try turning off the deep color option.

No problem, I always recommend people try their TV before messing with all the settings in hopes to get them just right. The new HDR TVs will switch automatically to the appropriate picture mode, or one that the manufacturer recommends. Only if you are unhappy with some part of the picture, maybe you want a warmer color tone or you feel it's too dim, would I adjust.

I wonder if there is any way to configure the X800 to automatically enable subtitles when playing Blu-ray discs?

In have selected this in the X800 settings:
Setup->BD/DVD Viewing Settings->Subtitles Language->[Language]

However when I start to play a Blu-ray disc, no subtile is shown despite that the Blu-ray disc has subtitles available in the Language I have selected. So for each disc, I have to manually select the subtile language after having started to play the disc (by pressing the Subtitles button on the remote control).

Is this the intended behavior? If so, what is the purpose of the setting Setup->BD/DVD Viewing Settings->Subtitles Language->[Language]?

I don't think any BDs support automatic subtitles at least I have never seen it. I don't know what that setting is for. Some movies have subtitles hardcoded in for when characters speak different languages for certain scenes but that's all I've ever noticed.

I am using Monoprice certified premium high speed cables with my X-800 and have never experienced handshake or picture issues like you are describing, so I doubt it's a cable compatibility issue. The only issue I am having is the occasional complete freeze, which has nothing to do with the HDMI interface.

Thanks for the reply. I ended up going to best buy this weekend and bought a rocketfish certified cable. Sure enough, no issues. I've been running it all weekend and not a single problem!

I hate to say it, but it had to be the monoprice cables. So to all the people (including myself) who say an HDMI cable is the same quality no matter the price... not so true. Either that, or I randomly got two separate monoprice cables that were faulty.

It depends, I use those Monoprice cables with no issues. Do note though that not every single cable is tested for the full 18Gbps certification. Just a selection from each lot.

Downloadable 4K Demo Quality Content

Are there some sites which would have legitimate 4K Demo Quality content available for download. I'd like to have a few files on my USB which will really show off the X800 4K capability. Also, is there a thread that deals with this specifically? If so, I haven't found it.

Regards, Steve
Projector/Receiver - Sony VPL-VW1100ES 4K PJ & Sony STR-ZA5000ES 4K Atmos AVR
Media Devices - Panasonic DP-UB820 4K BR, Sony UBP-X800 4K BR, ATV 4K, and Roku 4K
Screen - 145" Dragonfly, 1.2 Gain, 16:9, Matte White Fixed Screen
Theater Remote/Cables - Universal MX-990 RF Remote, Monoprice Certified 18Gb HDMI Cables

You may want to contact Monoprice regarding those cables, as they carry a lifetime warranty. I had one bad cable from them -- it wouldn't provide any connection -- and they replaced it. I wasn't even required to send back the defective cable, so it went in the trash.

Here?s one to get your head around

I?m watching Netflix in UK from my x800 inbuilt app to my Sony 1000ES NON-HDR projector. This PJ can only ?see? resolution of up to 30fps eg 4K30 or where appropriate 4K24. It cannot handle eg 4K60.

Now unless someone tells me otherwise, the player outputs at 4K60. The result being that when I try to watch 4K programmes on Netflix something happens and Netflix only allows me to watch these programmes in HD even though I have a UHD subscription. Just to be clear I can watch the 4K NETFLIX programmes in 4K on my Sony A1 TV using the x800 app

Question: by What means will I get to watch these 4K Netflix programmes in 4K on my PJ.

I tried an HD Fury in the chain but to no avail

Sony A1 55" OLED;Sony X800 4k UHD blu-ray
Sony 1000ES PJ ;StewartScreen 1.3 100"

Netflix is 4k24 on the x800. However the home screen and Netflix menu are 60hz so it probably flags as 1080p. This is going to always be a problem for devices unable to handle the full HDMI spec.

I believe you got bad cables, as i also have all Monoprice certified cables (4) and i have not had any issues. As Scott suggested, contact Monoprice for replacement cables. Worst case you have spare certified cables rather than throwing them in the trash.

The monoprice cables have a warranty. Plus you can always damage a cable. I stepped on the end of one of my premium certified cables, and it started having issues with UHD content. So now I only use it with 2K devices.

I've also received one defective cable. But the rest of the three dozen + premium certified cables I've purchased have been fine.

Netflix is 4k24 on the x800. However the home screen and Netflix menu are 60hz so it probably flags as 1080p. This is going to always be a problem for devices unable to handle the full HDMI spec.
Thx for your reply

I?m now going direct from Sony player to Sony 1000ES PJ

When I?m on player home screen my PJ says it?s receiving 3840/2 160/30p I go to Netflix menu. It says the same. So far so good

I scroll to a genuine 4K programme like Meridian and now although the info on the PJ remains the exact same ie it?s receiving at the HDMI input 3840/2160/30p BUT Meridian is only showing HD. Ditto Marco Polo in fact EVERYTHING that?s 4K is only showing as HD.

Makes no sense to me. You?

Hi. Update. The pic does NOT come through to the PJ as soon as I click on an actual programme ( I get sound only, screen goes blank) SOOOOO I?ve reintroduced the HD Fury and now the pic comes through fine- IN HD!

Still doesn?t make sense though as to why going direct OR with HDFury in the chain the Netflix before I click on the actual programme shows the programme as HD not 4K yet the PJ says it?s receiving a 4k/30 pic

To answer your question. It gets to 4.1meg / 1080.

OTOH when I use the app on my Sony A1TV or when connecting this x800 to the A1 I get to around 15meg and programme plays in 4K

Hmmmn

That proves, #1 . You have appropriate speed on your network to display 4K. #2 . There is nothing wrong with your X800. #3 . In my opinion, the PJ is the problem. Is it HDCP 2.2 compliant ? If it is not, there is your answer.

Cheers
