I'm still waiting to upgrade our projector to 4K. Hoping that the second generation 4K DLP machines will have more features (lens memory). In the mean time, we really enjoy our Sharp Z30K. It is only 1080p, but with the addition of the Darbee, the picture is superb.
I'm thinking of getting an X800, on close out, to future proof our set up and to "play around" with it.
Question: Will there be any benefit to getting the Sony X800 to play "ordinary" Blu-ray discs or DVDs? I have read that the X800 does an excellent job of playing all formats. The question is, will we be able to see an upgrade in PQ on a 1080p display?
From my reading, the x800 will play 1080p Blu-rays fine. However, is the signal output compatible with the Darbee (which will not pass 4K)?
Thanks
Do not know about Darbee, but if you do not want the X800 to upscale to 4K, you need to set the output to 1080P.

Cheers

No it does not. Factory setting is 1080P gets up scaled to 4K. Depending on the Display it will downscale, however it is safer to set the output to 1080P so there are no compatibility problems. The deck is supposed to sense the display is 1080 P, however sometimes, it does not happen, especially if you have Darbee in the video path. I would advice setting the output to 1080P.

Cheers

I've been using the 5Ghz Wifi from my X800 lately. It's been a great solution to get a faster network connection than the wired 100BT ethernet port provides. So the 100Mb/s+ bitrate UHD files I have, that buffered with the wired connection, play smoothly from the 5Ghz wireless N connection.

Or those test bitrate Jellyfish videos. The 120mb/s test video can't play smoothly from the wired connection. But from the wireless connection, there are no issues when I playback that 120mb/s test jellyfish video.

Interesting results. I do think the wi-fi of this player is stellar.

I have high speed cables. It's strange but it's working today. What settings do I need to let my TV do all of the upscaling?

Turn upscaling off in the player. Then for 1080p content you will get 1080p to the tv.

I will have to try that too. Currently I'm using the wired connection but it can't keep up with streaming the Billy Lynn UHD. The X800 sits in a rack in my "bat cave" so doesn't have the best wifi unfortunately, but I guess I can always add a dedicated 5G X800 streaming AP to the rack if need be

Ditto Ralarcon! No problems here either. I guess I have a decent unit, or just do not use it as much as other, but other than 1 short freezing moment, the X800 has been a great player for me.

Would I have any issues with this player with a Samsung MU8000? The current Samsung 4K players dont seem that good and this seems like a solid unit.

so here's something interesting i learned tonight. i only use my X800 when watching 4k or bluray movies. When watching Netflix, Hulu, Crackle, ect i use the Vizio TV apps. but i decided to mess with the apps on the X800 and while watching Netflix, Crackle, Hulu when i press the info button on my Vizio remote it shows i'm getting 2160. but if i use the TV app i can only get it to display either 720 or 1080p? can someone chime in on why it's doing that? really appreciate it!

Wired or wireless??

If wireless, maybe the Sony has better wifi pickup?

If wired, is the TV ethernet connection 10/100 or Gigabit? Again, maybe the Sony has a faster ethernet port??

Just fishing.

I believe the Auto setting on the X800 will upscale the content to 4K, so as far as the Vizio is concerned, that’s the resolution of the stream, not the original content.

I recently got this UBP X800 for my 2016 LG C6 OLED. I have the hdmi setting on my LG set to enable deep color. I'm just wondering what the recommendations are for deep color on the Sony player (Auto or off?) and the color space to Auto, 4:2:2 or 4:4:4? I've seen conflicting info on those. Anyone have thoughts/advice on the most accurate setting?

I use deep color auto with 4:2:2, auto hdr, and auto upscaling on my 2015 lg Oled and it works great.

I don't really understand the color space thing either. Does auto set it depending on the source and why force 4:2:2? I was watching Blade Runner 2049 with everything on auto and it looked great.

4:2:2 is closer to 4:2:0 which discs are encoded in. Plus it takes less bandwidth on the HDMI cable.

Yesterday, I watched the first two episodes of Planet Earth II with the X800's Netflix and my Sony 285 4K projector. Verified that it was playing in 4K. I'll watch more today.

Hello. I have had my Sony X800 4K player for several months now, and a problem has come up. Several times now the players disc drawer opens and closes VERY slowly and the disc won’t play. The player won’t even allow me to open the drawer to retrieve my disc when this happens. The only way to get it working again is to physically pull the power plug, then wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.

Have any of you had a similar problem with your Sony? If so, have you contacted Sony, and if so, what did they say about it?

Hi all, a couple of hours ago I've got my first issue with the x800, while seeing the 4K version of "The Revenant". During chapter 5 (the one before "the bear attack"), the picture freeze for some seconds( the audio flow instead hadn't any issue and continued to stream), then resume, then freeze...and after some stop & go definitely freeze.

Last days I saw on the x800 "Monkey Planet - the War" (I don't know exactly the english title) and Dunkirk, with no issue at all.

The x800 is connected through a unique XDMI cable to my Marantz NR1607 (secondary HDMI port not activated) and the video stream is then send from the AVR to my Sony 4K TV through another HDMI cable.

What can I do? Anybody got the same experience with this UHD Blu-Ray? Or Do I need to add a second HDMI cable to separate A and V streams from the x800 (I'd avoid it, to maintain simplest the setup ).

Both the HDMI cable are High Speed HDMI 2.0.
x800 firmware is updated to last version.

Any suggestion?
Thanks a lot in advance

Andrea

I have written previously about being on my second player from Sony. They replaced it once and now the second player is freezing every other time I use it even after I put it upstairs to use as the kids room player. Disc, apps just powering up it freezes.

Finally had time and Called Sony again today, they offered to replace it again, I declined and asked for a refund (I purchased way back when it cost 300 bucks), I will be getting a callback Monday from the customer escalation team. I suppose they will offer to replace it with the new 700 which I will decline as it doesn't seem to have the features the 800 has. I would be surprised if they agreed to give me refund but I figured it is worth a try.

I would steer clear away from this player, I have used two different units on two different receiver/tv combinations and both freeze all the time, definitely a defective processer or something. Is it possible that I received two bad ones in a row, sure anything is possible but I doubt it.

Question Little discussion noted specifically about the AUDIO QUALITY of this unit. Comments?

If I purchase this unit, I actually plan to utilize it for audio listening, quite a bit, so that aspect of this Sony is very important to me. Not much comment (there are soooo many pages to this thread) on the audio aspect of the Sony X-800. Could you guys comment on this, say, as compared to my seven year old Panasonic moderately-priced Blu-ray deck?
Thanks.

Could you guys comment on this, say, as compared to my seven year old Panasonic moderately-priced Blu-ray deck?
Thanks.
Theres no analog outs, it will sound the same regardless of the player via HDMI unless you are tweaking it using the DSEE HX upscaling.

Well it does support SACD/DSD, so if your AVR does too, you can now play really high quality multi-channel audio disks that most Blu-ray players can't.

UBP800 vs S5100

Excited today as I finally hooked up a couple new pieces that I acquired recently, my 4KUBP800 player and my Denon x2400H. My problem is this...ive already been using a region free Sony s5100 for movies I import. Now when I’m trying to watch my 4K movies on the new player, the old player turns on (Sony remote and harmony remote triggers it) and the Denon swaps feed over from my 4K movie to the other Blu Ray that I didn’t want on in the first place!

Other than covering up the sensor on the region free player, is there anything you all can think of to stop this annoying occurrence? Posting the same on Denon feed just in case there is something I can change on it

Thanks all!
