Mine is an early model since I got it within a couple of weeks of launch. But it's been working great. And I use the quick on mode.

My x800 works fine.

The only hiccup occurred with Amazon video. It froze during a reverse scan, although I was doing a lot of things in quick succession while testing the app. I haven't encountered any other freezes since then.

Also, the receiver no longer recognizes the DSD stream if I try playing SACDs after going back to the home screen or doing anything else in between playbacks. I have to either toggle the power switch or switch to PCM output. Also, the doesn't recognize the SACD layer on one of my hybrid discs, and reverts to playing the CD layer.

I don't have a 4k HDTV, but I have been buying 4k Ultra BDs. I've played both Dunkirk and Hidden Figures all the way through without any issue.

I know ultimately the answer is subjective to the viewer, but perhaps there is factual evidence regarding the abilities of what is used on the 2015 UHD TV verses the 2017 Blu-ray player. I'll post this in both forum threads for replies. Thanks.
I know that the x800 uses a Mediatek SoC to handle the video processing. Don't know which exact model. Anyone can check, if they're willing to remove the cover and then remove the heatsink from the processor.

But, generally that's not recommended because there's also a layer of thermal paste between the heatsink and the chip. You might not be able to read the markings on the chip anyway because of the paste residue. And when putting the unit back together, you need to make sure that you correctly reapply the thermal paste. Apply too much on there, and it might bleed into the wiring. Apply too little, and the player might become unreliable because of overheating.

I've removed the cover from my x800 before, and this is the interior. No analog circuitry, so the board is pretty simple. The SoC is underneath the heatsink. There's also a separate Sony ARM processor that presumably handles the apps, and the other big visible chip is flash memory.

I really dislike this player. I now understand why so many people break the bank on the Oppo.

There are thousands of these units out in the wild and only a small percentage have problems. Those problem ones are usually the units that are brought up here by people looking for advice. Keep talking about the the models that are working well to show that not all units are problems.. Thanks for providing info on your Sony..

I didn't see this but if anyone already posted I apologize. Just curious if anyone ever gets what I would call a pink tint to there apps when backing out of a movie and if so what it may be caused from. Thanks for the help.

Set my TV to use DCI instead and the shadow detail and color was much better. Almost but not quite there. Then I discovered bumping gamma to +2 did it. I have no idea if this is set up correctly now but I am really, really happy with the HDR picture now. The farm house/kitchen scene at the beginning of the movie is particularly challenging due to the high contrast of bright overcast natural light from the small windows. Previously this scene was just way too dark I could barely discern there was an unlit florescent fixture above the stove. I went back to watch my problematic scenes in Altered Carbon. A huge improvement!

I really need to get my hands on a HDR test disc to verify levels. But
I heard that some Sony discs have a hidden test pattern menu if you enter 7669 on the remote. But the X800 has no keypad and even though the X900 allows numeric entry through HDMI control, I was unable to envoke these test patterns.
If it's not too much trouble, would you mind posting details of your TV and player settings, I would be interested in trying them here. TIA.

DCI is just plain wrong for color space: UHD Blu-rays are mastered in a BT.2020 container, even if the content inside is DCI.... If you force the TV to output DCI color space you are not decoding colors correctly....

If I use BT.2020 it looks like somebody turned the light offs. Everything is dark. I don't know the differences between any of these colour settings. All I know is DCI gives me a better picture. I'm willing to research it but it's probably over my head.

I have the same TV you have (Sony XE90) and I don't have this problem: you should check your TV settings, make sure you have Local Dimming set to MEDIUM/HIGH and X-Tended Dynamic Range set to HIGH for HDR content...

It's plenty bright for me, I even turned down brightness (AKA Backlight) from 50 to 32, and I still get a very bright image...

But you shouldn't touch Color Space and HDR mode.

Only Sony may have a clue but they will not disclose if alternate sub-assys were used in the build process for some of their later/ more recent builds due to lack of original parts. This does happen quite often in the electronics industry but 2nd sorced replacement parts somtimes are discovered to NOT perform as well even though they did have the required design specifications on paper from the alternate supplier. I'm not really sure if this is the case with this unit though.

I know when I'm watching a UHD disc on my 4k (but not HDR) pj, the projector setting is washed out. The tv setting is better.

I have a choice between the x800 and the new x700. I took one look at the x700 the other night and it was no thank you. So at the end of the month I'm picking up the x800. Its replacing a Samsung 8500 4k Blu ray player that just died the other day.

What I didnt like about the x700 is it looked cheap and Sony went back to the smaller size. The x800 is what I was looking for and it fits right in with my other HT components. Cant wait to pick one up at the end of the month.

Unless one needs Dolby Vision, the x800 is easily the better option. Assuming they cost around the same.

Well I have no need for DV and I can get a good price on an x800. So that's the route I'm going.

The player has some sort of audio up-scaling to high resolution.

Has anyone used this feature?
Does it improve the original audio quality?

Does it improve the original audio quality?
I have mine set to on. It will double the sampling rate with stereo content. so 44.1 Khz content is doubled to 88.2khz. And 48khz content is doubled to 96khz. I do think it helps some with lower quality stereo content. At least when I made a comparison last year that's what I thought.
But then my Onkyo receiver also has a feature that does the same thing. So if my x800 isn't doing it, my Onkyo receiver is doubling the sampling rate with the stereo content.

Again, TrueHD is *only* supported in M2TS containers. It doesn't matter what DLNA sever you use, this is a limitation of the player.

Flac multi channel is supported (as is DSD multi) over DLNA.
I must be setting things up wrong somehow. When I browse through the sony media server link to my jriver media server dlna, in any folder that has dsf files it says "no playable file in this category"
When I browse to the same folder using my Marantz SR6011 AVR it finds them and plays them showing DSD 2.8Mhz.
I have seen some people connect their TV directly to the Sony and use HDMI2 for audio. But I am stuggling to understand why the Sony refuses to even see the files.
Any ideas?
Thanks

3d mkv

Has anyone tried 3D MKV files on the X800? I tried to play a MVC 3D MKV and it just played in 2D. I will re-encode in SBS and try that. Just wondering if anyone has had any success and what format worked. Thanks.
