Google Play store is only available on Android/Android TV devices. The x800 does not run any form of Android. New apps are only available through firmware updates.

Current system:
Sony 75X900e/Sony STR-DN-1080, CS-3/CS-8/CS5
Sony X800 4K blu-ray player/Dish Hopper3
Roku 4 Premier/Sony PS-4

AFAIK, there is no controllable app installation possible on this player. The only way is to use the apps menu and + icon, but what is/will be available, is totally out of your control and strongly dependent on your region.

Annoying Pause when scanning Netflix Menu titles

A few weeks ago my X800 began pausing (going to a black screen) for a couple of seconds when I'm on the Netflix titles menu and I scroll from one thumb to the next. I'm on a 150 MB fibre connection so it's probably not internet speed-related. This pausing behavior is consistent and doesn't get much better even if I go slower or scan right and then go back left over titles I've already scanned. Anyone have an idea why this happens and if there is a solution?

Most likely you have Original Frame Rate output selected for internet content. See a post of mine here. If you set the internet content to 60 Hz then scrolling will not cause a re-sync but all content (23.976, 24, 29.97, 30, etc.) will be reformated to 60 Hz.

Thank you for your reply! Where in the X800 menu can I find this setting?

Sony ubp-x1000es blank screen on menu

Hi all,
I recently received a Sony UBP-X1000es player. Problem is that when powered on, the screen is blank. If I put a bluray in, it will play (though it has been freezing). My guess is it's not booting up correctly. I'm not sure if it's a hardware issue or software issue. Anyone have any tricks I can try on this, or suggestions as to what the issue is? I may just have a bad player and have to suck it up to buy another one. I was just hoping I could bring it back to life.

FYI, powering on my X1000es takes 5 mississippis from button push to Sony logo splash screen, then 3 more mississippis to the home screen (and thats with Quick Start DISABLED). Sorry to hear about your odd behavior, bro. I've had more Sony kit than any other marque, since a lad in the 80s, and only one lemon out of the box.

A thought: the home screen is played at 60p, while blu-rays are played at 24p.

Another thought: some people have said that new blu-ray discs have a clear coating that pose disc read problems for the Sonys. Wiping off the coating eliminated the prob for them.

My unit has "Update Services" now showing on the home screen, as of October 3rd, give or take a day.

I'm afraid to click on it for fear something will get worse. Anybody know what changes this pushout is fixing to make?

That is exactly the first diagnosis for the "movies play but no homescreen" issue. A certified premium HDMI cable with guaranteed 18Gbps throughput is needed along the way from the player to screen.

Or maybe just a new one. My cable is doing the job, and it most definitely is not a modern era, certified 4K capable one. Pre-4K and several years old to be for sure. I've had the X1000ES for a month now; it arrived with FW M37.R.0338 - the latest - already installed. Not had a single video related issue - DVD, Bluray, streaming and USB files all play.

Maybe another thing is the TV on the other end. My case is Sony-to-Sony. With most of the settings on the X1000ES player being left on "Auto", the player gets on with its corporate kin easypeasy.

I have tried 2 different HDMI cables to my 4k LG. Though not sure if they are certified. I have a small 1080p tv I have also tried. Yesterday I bought a really short certified HDMI cable (too short to reach my 4k that's on the wall), and still no luck.

During my troubleshooting, I've had it seem to freeze when the LCD says hello. After a while it will power cycle itself.

I have no idea what the firmware it's running is, nor can I change any setting other than to lower the resolution to 480p using the stop > home > popup/menu sequence listed in the manual. The TV shows me what resolution the output is, and I see it switch to 480p.

From memory so may not be exact, Set Up → Screen (settings or output) → 24 Hz → Internet Video then choice of Auto or Off. Set to Off then everything will be reformatted to 60 Hz.

Awesome, thank you so much, it works! Now, do you know how to transform a 13" subwoofer into two 18 inchers?

What about booting it up untethered, does it freeze then?

Here's the LCD display during the bootup sequence on my unit:
"HELLO" from the 2 second mark to the 18 second mark,
"HOME" from the 18 second mark to the 19 second mark, (not even a full second, really just a quick blip)
"EMPTY" from the 19 second mark to the 25 second mark,
"HOME" from the 25 second mark on.

Another thing:

I could swear that my brain has sensed a (mini-)pattern here with Sony-player-connected-to-LG-TV users. I think nat1eat and Rogue74 have had troubles as well. Is your 1080p also an LG?

ubp x800 and AAC 7.1

I just picked up a sony ubp x800 and I'm attempting to use it as a media player. I have a lot of x265 encoded movies (both 1080p and 2160p) in a mkv containers. It will read these files both from data written BD-Rs and usb thumb drives or hard drives. It plays the video of these files perfectly but the audio is a bit strange. The files that have AAC 5.1 sound great, the ones that have AAC 7.1 (this is most of them) sound all garbled. I know the files are fine because (for the 1080p ones at least) I can play them on my computer and send the 7.1 to my receiver. I'm directing the sound to my receiver using the audio only hdmi port of the x800.

I get proper sound when I play commercial blu rays (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 etc).

Can anyone help me get the audio on the AAC 7.1 encodes to work properly with the x800?

The Sony 700 and 800 do not support Dolby Atmos/TrueHD when played back through the mkv containers. There is some additional info about how to keep the files as they are but update them so the 800 can play it in a format that the 800 supports for MKV files.

It does not support Dolby TrueHD (with or without Atmos) from MKV-s. Because MKV tools for some unknown reason rip the track into 2 and store them in separate tracks inside MKV.
Best to avoid MKV-s altogether and use m2ts when Atmos playback is needed.
DVDFab even is able to re-create working m2ts from MKV and reconstruct the TrueHD track so that it plays back on the UBP-s.

It took me a while to sort this out. Tried the eac3to+TSMuxeR way. Works for AVC but not for HEVC clips.
Finally found that DVDFab has sorted out most of these problems. Everything thanks to the people on this forum, who have contributed bits and pieces of the how-tos.

Can anyone help me get the audio on the AAC 7.1 encodes to work properly with the x800?[/QUOTE]

For anyone who may be interested, I have come up with a way to use these files with the x800 (and keeping the 8 channels of sound).

1st/ Using Total Audio MP3 Converter, I converted the sound portion of the mkv to a wav file using the 16 bit PCM codec (channels set to 7.1, sample rate left on auto, volume left at 100%. This outputs a .wav file (only takes a few minutes)

2nd/ Using MKVToolNix, I muxed the .wav file with the original mkv file (I left the original AAC 7.1 in but it could easily be removed to reduce the resulting file size). (took 5mins or so)

I then copied the resulting mkv to a thumb drive ... plugged it into the x800 and wow ... 7.1 is blasting out ... quality is great. I have yet to burn these audio updated mkvs to BD-Rs but I'm quite sure the X800 will play them just fine from there as well.

I have no idea why the media player in the x800 cannot handle AAC 7.1 but it sure plays nicely with PCM 7.1

Looking to buy this player as my dedicated Tidal player. Anyone got experience with that?

I do not really need the blue ray support, and my smart tv can stream netflix and other files.

I might dabble in setting up a media server for movies in the future, but for now it would be purely to use Tidal with digital out to my pre-amp. Anyone got experience with that? Can I use my smartphone to browse through the music using this setup?

Thank you in advance!

Can you explain to me exactly what you are doing with DVDFab. The mkvs I'd be interested in converting are HEVC encoded video (with HDR) and AAC 7.1 encoded audio. What I'd be looking for is video with the HDR intact and ...7.1 audio that the x800 can either decode or passthrough to my receiver.

I use the DVDFab UHD Creator module to create a bluray image from the source file. Once done, I take the m2ts file from the STREAM folder and move it to DLNA server. This works well for MKV-s with Atmos track, it will be recomposed into single audio track inside the m2ts.
I have not tried it with AAC multichannel. Will give it a try when I have time.

I purchased two of these units. The first was purchased in April of last year and the second in October on clearance with a lower serial number than the first. The second unit has never given me any problems and is used with a Vizio tv. The first one exhibits the same behavior as in your post and is used with a Sony XBR. The green light will be on sometimes by itself but when checking the tv, there is nothing on the screen and only unplugging the unit for a minute or so and then plugging it back in will it come back up. However, it usually loses all of the settings such as your network settings, Quickstart on/off etc. so you end up going back and fixing all of that. It then usually worked fine for around two months or so and it would do it again. So back it went to BB for an exchange as I had an extended warranty. It did not have a problem with freezing while playing discs and since I don't stream much, I can't comment on that part.

These are great units overall but some part is obviously lacking. As many of you have done, I tried changing the Quickstart mode, changed cables, turned off Bluetooth etc. but none of that made any difference with the first unit. I even left it off the network after the last two times to see if that would make a difference as I don't stream much at all so it wouldn't matter but that didn't help either. All updates were current as well as firmware like my second unit which has never frozen nor comes on by itself and appears "dead." I hope my new Sony UPB-X800M2 which replaces the first X800 will be an improvement.

I've been thinking about this DNLA server business but I'm not really up on it. I see setting it up on my Win10 system would be quite straightforward. But ... what app/menu/interface in the X800 is used to access the server and is it hard to set up? Thanks

Smartphone / Media server connection

Hi, Just purchased said player an had hoped to play content from my also newly acquired, Sony xperia 1 via bluetooth, so I can still use my phone whilst it plays through my av setup. Unfortunately I cannot get the phone to connect to bluetooth on the player (which it does state in the handbook to my dismay). So has anyone tried to connect a bluetooth usb dongle via the front usb and play content from my phone that way ?
Also, I tried to play music stored on my laptop via the media server option, but the message "no playable file in this category" comes up. It will show photos in "Photo" option but not music files.
