They don't really serve a purpose any more.

Although my Roku has a screen saver option that shows high resolution 4K pictures. Which I looked at once.

That's very true. We don't really need screen savers like we did for CRT and plasma displays. I guess I'm just old enough to have always had them and so I miss the "comfort" of them being there.

I've read the occasional article about temporary image retention on the new OLED TVs, but I'm not sure how much of a problem that actually is. I'm sure there are others on AVS more knowledgeable about that.

Sadly, I am correct. VUDU doesn't encode ATMOS with HDX movies. Please show me a VUDU HDX movie that has ATMOS.

Until VUDU adds the X800 as a UHD-compatible device, we will not get ATMOS.

Sorry, I thought you mentioned that it was for discs only, therefore was asking if the disc had to be in use.

Oh...

The setting only applies to disc-based media, but it's just a general setting that you set whenever you'd like.

Looked through the manual (Ctl F) and 'Native Resolution' did not come up? Where may it be

"Other than the Atmos sampler, the Vudu titles that have Atmos tracks are in UHD. HDX and lower are in DD+ or DD"

Sorry but you are incorrect. As noted I've already watched movies on VUDU in HDX and had ATMOS. Have done so on my ROKU. So their ATMOS mix that is buried in the DD+ codec works just fine in non-UHD streams, HDX. Whether the x800 can do so is about its features, not that VUDU buries ATMOS in JUST UHD streams.

If you don't want to enjoy ATMOS while streaming off VUDU that's your choice. I prefer to do so and can just fine with HDX via my ROKU Ultra.

I guess I'll just have to try a X800 myself and see.

I think he's trying to say that movies on the X800's Vudu app do not have Atmos tracks. I took a look myself at the listing for Fantastic Beasts (which is mentioned above as having an Atmos track with the 1080P encode). The Vudu listing on the X800 says it has a Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 track. Note: I did not buy/rent it, so I don't actually know it will or won't play an Atmos track.

Has anyone actually played a movie* on the X800 and had an Atmos track play?

*Not the Atmos Sampler

I can assure you, you are not informed properly on this. ATMOS is not a stream format but is just spatial information that can be encoded within a TRUEHD or DD+ container. My receiver clearly says DD+/ATMOS when I play the HDX ATMOS sampler on VUDU using the x800.

That may be right. I have not ever bought any movie of VUDU, but have played the Atmos sampler, which streams just fine using DD+

I have the hdx version of Fantastic Beasts from the UV digital copy that came with the movie. It streamed with Dolby Digital + but my receiver gave no indication that it was the Atmos track. Usually the display will say Atmos.

Does this player upscale 1080p Netflix content to 4k? I see my AVR and TV saying it is. Wondering if it's the player or the P55 doing this.

I have this. Is it more appropriate to perform all of the video processing in the Sony 930e, Sony Z9, or Sony OLED TVs which have special processing.

Who cares, that should be in your TV. The audio should go to your receiver via the audio only hdmi output.

Hi,

Thanks for your response but I think you misunderstood the question.

I want to know if the player can handle 4k MKVS with HD audio via USB or via Network (DLNA)

Handles this just fine and will play with one exception. For TrueHD, this must be in a M2TS container.

That's good to hear apart from TrueHD, It's the same sort of issue I had with Sony's BD players.

I have the Samsung player currently and the Sony on order from Abt.com. The Samsung has the plex app and I was able to play a 4k rip of a movie (passengers) from my Mac mini through a wired network connection. However it kept cutting out every few minutes. Also I don't know if it was transcoding anything. If so may be the Mac mini lacks the horse power for that. I wish the Sony had plex as well. I hope there is a plan for it.

The only reasons I ordered the Sony are for sacd, built quality, uhd disc playback quality (as per consensus). For application, I think Samsung is far ahead.

Could someone post a screenshot as to how the UI looks when streaming audio from a network drive ?

I'm interested how this looks compared to using an Apple TV 4, what information is available i.e. bit rates etc and what the controls look like on screen

If anyone has done this streaming from a drive on their network, how reliable is it and how easy is it to set up ?

This may be my tipping point between this player and the far more expensive Oppo.

Sony XBR65X900E, Oppo UDP-203 Universal Player
Front L&R - Polk TSx550t, Centre - Polk CSiA6 all in Cherry
Surrounds & Rears - Mission 77DS & Mission 780s
Subwoofer - Polk PSW125 in Cherry
Receiver - Marantz SR6012
