Official LG UP970 4K Blu-Ray Player Owners Thread

I played my first DVD today. Granted, this will be rare, but Descendants 2 is not available on on blu-ray for my daughter. Anyways, I tried to rewind, and the player completely froze. I was able to turn it off with the power button.

I don't know if I should return it or not as mine seems quiet with blus and 4k discs.

Does anyone have issues rewinding blu rays and/or 4k discs?

I got it at Frys, and as of a week ago, I got the newest date.

Suggestions?

Edit: someone on another forum said to check my disc. It is brand new though. I tried another DVD anyways, and the player froze again! Frustrating something so basic as rewinding can cause a player to freeze.

Yes. Watching a series of DVDs right now and it freezes most of the time on rewind. Am hoping the upcoming update has a fix included for this.

I tried unplugging the player for a minute and plugging back in. Seems to have helped. Will keep an eye on it though.

I'm making progress. I got my Logitech remote programmed this morning. This week has just been a bear. Still more than likely the weekend before I get around to watching something. I have a Family Video here in town and they started renting 4K movies in May. Family Video is supposedly a franchise at least here in the Midwest. They only have 7 or 8 titles so far. Logan is one of them. I'm not into superhero stuff really, but you can bet I'm heading there to pick it up and give it a whirl.

Same issue with DVDs, freezing the whole system on rewind. No issue with Blu-Rays, though. So probably a software bug. Isn't it fun to be a Beta tester? :-)

Still and all, no big deal. On the rare occasion I want to watch a DVD, I can use my old player (they are both connected). LG must have been in one heck of a hurry to get the unit out on the street.

Exactly! The whole vibration issue and rewind problems are ridiculous.

Have you tried unplugging the power cord for a minute?

Yeah, unplugging the cord was the only way I could get the machine to work again. Then it played Kong: Skull Island 3D flawlessly. To be honest, for the money, I expected a couple bugs.

OK, so I contacted LG Support about the DVD issue. They had me reset the player (like when you first set it up) and it corrected the problem. It will now rewind DVDs.

not really sure where to post this question so here goes. I own the LG UP970 and the LG C7 and I had a question about playing regular blu rays. Is it better to use this player or my sony blu ray player? the up970 I assume upscales the 1080p source to 4k and I guess if I use the regular blu ray player the tv would upscale the blu ray from 1080p to 4k. i guess my question is who would convert the 1080p signal better, the LG 4k player to the LG TV or the sony blu ray to the LG TV?

I have heard of that also. A simple unplug-replug worked for me. Just hope the issue doesn't come back.

Something new now: I was rewinding a disc today, and pressed the back arrow a few times to speed up the rewind. I pushed "play" to stop it, but it just kept on rewinding! Finally after a couple of more seconds it stopped rewinding and played. So it never froze at least, but it just wouldn't stop rewinding.

Anyone else with this issue?

That is something you will have to experiment with, and then choose your preference.

Any suggestions on the player's picture modes? Just leave it on standard/everything on 0, or do you need to crank sharpness all the way down to prevent artificial sharpening? I tried searching the thread but couldn't find anything about this specifically.

I purchased mine just over a month ago now. The first one was a Feb. build and it had a lot of noise.
I returned it to Best Buy and got a March build and I have nearly 0 vibration noise.

I too am also waiting very impatiently for the DV update. I just installed my Atmos speakers for a 5.1.2 setup yesterday and just today purchased Ghost in the Shell. I would be overjoyed if the DV update came today so I can watch it with DV and Atmos tonight. Maybe I will get lucky and a firmware check updates...

A question: I will be getting a second unit to connect to my LG 79UB9800 (a 2014 TV). HDMI 1 is HDCP 2.2 and HDMI 3 states 10Bit. Which input will give me the better 4K picture? No HDR as the TV was made before that came out. Thanks!

Hey guys, I've got an LG OLEDE6P + LG UP970 I don't know whether to post this in my TV forum or this blu-ray player forum.

I bought the Planet Earth 2 UHD disk as my first "real test" for this TV + Player, and am getting 3 problems:
1) Severe banding during some scenes. Examples:
- Severe banding during the clouds in the intro to episode 3, Jungle http://i.imgur.com/rvuepGN.jpg?1

- Mild banding on the intro screen around the sunshine http://i.imgur.com/1CKCtkX.png?1

2) A white line of light at the bottom of the screen from time to time. http://i.imgur.com/Z7uwSdW.png?1
Here's a video where it's really obvious during the intro screen, and right as it transitions from the clouds to the trees. (ignore the stuttery second half of the video...my phone's camera is dying)

3) Severe...frame loss? "judder"? Not sure what it is... during a couple screens, such as right before the end of the baby Ibex descent in at the start of episode 2, where it's racing down the grayish slope, it's almost as if the video is trying to render multiple frames of the Ibex at once. The rest of the episode is fine, though I noticed it randomly in other chapters as well. It doesn't come through in a video, so here's a screenshot http://i.imgur.com/Vb1PCm6.png Here's a video for context

Is this my TV? Or the UP970 Player? Or the film itself?

PS I don't have another TV/player laying around, so I can't check elsewhere. :/ I have one day left to return the player if it's that. Thanks!

David

Ghost in the shell is NOT encoded with Dolby Vision. If you want DV eye candy, get Fate of the Furious 4K Blu Ray.

To webdj777:

Banding-none seen, but some of the clouds are darker than others. I believe that is photography
White line-none seen
Judder-maybe a fraction of a second, probably the disc

I concur. Furious 8 or Power Rangers! Although Power Rangers is not a great movie, it is some good eye candy!!!

Yeah, I realized that after purchase. Oh well, it still looks damned nice with standard HDR. I just remember seeing Dolby Vision on a Bluray.com review of the movie so it got stuck in my mind.

As for Fate of the Furious, I think I will wait until a combo pack comes out for UHD that has all 8 films. I see that Cabin in the Woods has DV so I think I will pick that one up.

I'm still a novice at this. Why is Ghost in the Shell encoded with Dolby Vision on Vudu, but not on the disc?

Well the disc was released before it was available on VUDU and if I remember correctly VUDU does not do use HDR10. The only HDR format they use is Dolby Vision. So I believe the answer is a combination of the two.

Some believe there is an issue with the Dolby Vision encodes for discs. If you read some of the comments from the Oppo-203 (only player that plays DV at the moment) people are saying the DV version of movies has elevated blacks and that the widescreen bars will turn grey at times during the movie. Both with Fast 8 and Power Rangers. I can't remember if the issue was on the Resident Evil: Vendetta disc, and the only other two with DV are the Despicable Me's. However, both are full screen and so the black bar issue would not be seen.

Sounds like a handshake issue between the TV and the player. Hopefully firmware updates fixes it since it sounds like its sporadic with the way it displays.

I believe that white line is the TV, something to do with the Screen Shift to limit image retention. I think the white line is a bug with the latest firmware or something, you'd have to ask in the thread for your TV.
