It is second-hand info of course, but they told him that after the two years they were gone for good. Not just the players but the whole operation.
When did Oppo tell your father this information over the phone?

Oppo recently posted on their website....

August 27, 2018: We have begun sending out e-mails inviting registered customers to purchase am OPPO UDP-205. As we have already begun winding down our business, we have limited fulfillment capacity. E-mails are being sent out in daily batches to throttle the amount of orders to fulfill.

I received an email from OPPO this afternoon regarding the status of my request on June 18, 2018 to purchase a UDP-205:

From OPPO: I've looked up this email address and looks like your registration is mid-June for the UDP-205 Interest List. If that information is accurate, the player is not likely going to be available to you as there are thousands ahead in the queue and we are not able to manufacture enough units for everyone in the queue.

Interesting that there were already thousands ahead of me on the list. That is a lot of demand. Now I need to find something from a different company.

Time to start doing research. I am in no rush. I currently have an OPPO 95 player and am cannot view 4k with either my Panasonic plasma tv or my laser LCOS projector.

4k is great but it would be hooked up to a TV that isn't 4k. I really want it for audio as I have a full Paradigm Signature setup do listen to a lot of music being a musician. Plus in the future I could move it to a dedicated 2 channel system that I have high hopes of building at some point!

I was going to use the 205 for both music and av with my 5.1 system. I also have a 2 channel system that is dedicated to music. Looks like I will continue to use my OPPO 95 player with the 5.1 system for now.

Just curious - what instrument(s) do you play? I play the violin and piano.

I have high hopes one day to build that 2.0 system but kids are putting a damper on that dream!

I play sax; mostly tenor since my alto got stolen years ago. I took Piano in college. I sucked! Always wanted to play guitar but I consider myself more of an owner than a player! I give you a lot of credit!

Yeah, I think the handwriting is on the wall, even for those of us who placed interest earlier than this (for me, early June).

I already have a 205, purchased last fall and is now sitting in my home theater media cabinet. I wanted a second one for my two channel listening room which has a all-analog tube pre-amp and has been served right now with a Mac hooked up to a Oppo HA-2 portable DAC and an Apple Airport Express (now with Airplay 2!). The HA-2 was always a place holder for something else and I always thought I'd have time to save up for another 205 and I think I may have placed interest too late. And I refuse to pay what eBay flippers are asking for.

But I recently added back a Oppo 203 back into my house from a friend I'd sold it to earlier. I'm thinking now that I might place it in the home theater and move the 205 to the two channel room. The 205 checked all the boxes I was looking for in a player for the home theater:

1. Would play just about anything, disc or network.
2. MQA compatible
3. USB DAC for critical listening

The 203 only checks the first box but since I became a Roon customer recently, I can at least do the first part of unfolding through software with it to any of the endpoints in the house and the 203 qualifies. I'd lose USB DAC capability but I care more about that in the 2 channel room. And as a bonus, I get a credible headphone amp in the two channel room where I'd more likely use it....I'd never use it in the home theater.

Hmmmm.....

Any way to disable analog output when not in use to reduce heat output? Thinking it could extend component life.

Hopefully by the end of the two years the UHD format will be "settled." While the Blu-ray format required a lot of firmware updates at first, after a while it became unnecessary - I haven't updated my BDP95 firmware in years.

The one firmware spanner in the works is HDR10+. While backwards compatible with HDR10, there will likely be a significant chunk of HDR10+ content and this is something likely Oppo won't implement in firmware, though it would be great if they did.

In terms of glitches, etc - if I were a major authoring house I would use the UDP-203 and UDP-205 on their "final" firmware as a necessary QC device.

If the device breaks after the two years period (i.e. laser issues etc), hopefully a specialty repair company will be available - but it likely won't be cheap.

Wow! The second hand market for these things is going to be robust.

In the meantime, Oppo, California is all over this - ordered and shipped by Fedex the same day - within hours. Wonder how many they actually manufactured - as clearly they held off e-mail notifications until the players were manufactured (in China?) and on-hand in Menlo Park.

Well, that is the first honest response that I've heard Oppo give to anyone. At least you know where you stand.

I sent an e-mail back in the middle of April, so I may be still in the lottery. To be honest however, I'm starting to lose interest and may just stick with the two 203's I purchased in April. The 205 is expensive and I don't have the same warm and fuzzy feeling I had in the beginning that Oppo would still be around in some form for firmware updates and service.

I may try the Panasonic DP-UB9000 when that comes out in October.

I dont think oppo is just going to cut and run but there is no sense in maintaining a shop that doesnt sell anything.

The main shop will likely be shuttered after the last 205s rollout, and the company will retain a small team for 2yr firmware development and repair.

Is the Panasonic DP-UB9000 going to be available in the US? I haven't kept up on the availability but last I read it wasn't confirmed. The UB9000 isn't a universal player and is lacking quite a few features that the 205 has. The price of the UB9000 from what I've read will be over $1000 so it's quite expensive as well.

Apparently it will be released in USA late in october. Value Electronics in new Jersey is currently Beta Testing the UB 9000. There is a discussion thread in another forum.

I can say as of today, It still is not 100% that the 9000 will be in the US (no orders placed). They are shooting for 1st week of October launch, but no forecast info. The pricing will be over $1k mark.

That's been reported on AU and EU firmware. You might ask OPPO if there is any solution, else I suspect you'll have to wait for new firmware.

Thanks Bill, screaming and ranting and threatening to throw this expensive piece of junk in the bin seems to have done the trick! Seriously I have an 83,95, 105 and 205 and this is the first issue I've had so I need to chill...long day! Obviously a random glitch so hopefully they'll solve it, but its working now so fingers crossed. I have faith Oppo will come good.
Cheers.

So I got the link. I'm not sure if I really need a $1300 player, but it's the best Oppo and they aren't making any more. Hard decision......

Hard decision?!?! Really?!?! THIS is a hard decision!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just received this from Oppo for a June 19th reservation:

"Hi Bryan,

Given that there are over 5,000 people ahead of you on the list, I think it is safe to say that your chances of getting one through us are effectively zero.

Best Regards,

Customer Service
OPPO Digital, Inc.

About an hour after receiving that, I received this email and for the bargain of $2800!!!

Thanks for another purchase Bryan! Your order is confirmed.

Even if Oppo does nothing but release new firmware updates for the next two years, that's still better support than I have seen from Sony over the years.

I agree 100%! The reliability of Sony CD, DVD and SACD players I've owned over the years has been terrible. Basically disposable players with some being the early ES models. With that Sony service was nonexistent.
