It can, but will only re-encode audio streams from DTS to DD5.1 from disc and not from files. You'll have to convert all audio streams to DD 5.1 before playback if you want to use your hard drive.
I do it all the time and they play back brilliantly, awesome quality - just a little below the disc quality i'd say but great all the same.

So that means the Oppo has even more Value since it will play all these files in the Full Original Audio

If you already have an Oppo yes, otherwise they discontinued all the Oppo players. I think someone said Oppos are selling on eBay for around 3 times retail

Don't expect subtitles to work correctly from file playback. It shouldn't be too hard for Samsung to fix them with an update, so they play WHITE (like they are supposed to) instead of BLACK. I guess they just don't care about their customers. The subtitles are also way too large, even though they are unusable because of being BLACK (how stupid are you, Samsung).

Big white letters for us Seniors is OK, but Black may definitely be an issue !

So dumb question but I am trying out Plex and have it installed on my 9500 and my Nvidia Shield and Xbox One.

I can play a 4K MKV file on the Shield and Xbox with no buffering but the Samsung Plex app constantly buffers the file.
It has no problem with 1080p MKV files just these. Is the processing power of the Samsung that much less than the Shield or Xbox One?

Thanks.

I'm having trouble getting Atmos from Vudu's UHD. I hooked up the player's Main HDMI#1 to the TV (LG-B6) via High speed certified cable, Picture is fantastic & the HDMI#2 to the receiver Marantz AV8801 but only getting DD+ +PLX11. I should be getting DD True HD. Shouldn't the player be sending the Atmos soundtrack over the HDMI#2.

Curious, have you set the 'HDMI 2' audio output format to 'Bitstream (Unprocessed)'?

I have no DSP's selected & no down sampling in the receiver or player. I get ATMOS (DD True HD) with all 4K discs. I'm beginning to think that VUDU ATMOS is only carried by the main HDMI-1 port. Is anyone else getting ATMOS over the HDMI-2 port?

Anyone notice that since the latest firmware update, the info banner specifically tells you if the content is HDR10. Prior to that, it would only say HDR.

Given that John Archer stated that the 2017 Samsung players would be firmware upgraded to support HDR10+, I'm assuming that firmware 1111 added support for this format, hence the need to differentiate between the different HDR flavors in the info banner.

I have Oppo 203 and Samsung M9500, but have not done side by side PQ comparison, if that is what you are curious about. I like the Oppo 203 better, because it is much more versatile, but the M9500 would be satisfactory to me, since it cost a lot less, if Samsung would get their act together and fix the subtitles on USB file playback so they are not black! How hard is it for them to fix the subtitles and make them white? Does no one else have this problem? Am I the only one that tries to view subtitles on files played via USB, and am I the only one who is stuck with black subtitles that cannot be seen properly? This owner's thread is completely dead. Are there like 10 people that own this player, or what?

Would be nice if those that owned the Oppo 203, Panny UB900, Sony X1000ES(or X800), etc. gave us their impressions of the video and sound quality compared to the M9500...

This isn’t a comparison thread, most people who come here are looking for info on the m9500. Not trying to come off as rude but you need to set your expectations, I think most people in this thread own the m9500 and don’t own a Pany or Oppo.

As with you, I am more thank likely going to buy the Samsung Q9FN TV and new Samsung N950 soundbar...

And would like it if the M9500 blu-ray player had the same, or very close to the same, picture and sound quality of the Oppo 203/Pany UB900/Sony X1000/X800... as I would much rather get the Samsung because of how it plays with the Q9FN and N950.

So just wondering if anyone with both did a comparison.

I have not done a direct comparison to the Oppo, but I don't think there are any/many complaints about the PQ on this Samsung. It looks great to me. For the price I paid, about 38% of the price for the Oppo 203, I actually like the player. I would not complain and would even recommend it if Samsung spent two minutes to fix the FW and issue an update that fixed subtitles so they work properly on USB playback. I need to use subtitles very frequently.

My old Samsung BD-D7000 1080p player had no trouble rendering subtitles on USB file playback, and they even looked very nice. The font was nice and they were not so large, like on this player. It really doesn't matter how small or large they are anyway, if they are BLACK. On most scenes you cannot even SEE the subtitles, as they are too dark. You can only see them on lighter scenes. There are settings to change the size, font, color, outline etc. and I have tried them all, but none of them seem to work properly or stick after changing the settings.

What a disaster. How hard is it for the Samsung software team to fix a few lines of code and make them play white, like every other player? Also, even on the smallest setting the subtitles are far too large.

I just want the subtitles to work like they did 6 years ago on my old 3D 1080p player.

Samsung dropped 3D support, subtitles via USB playback do not work properly (although subtitles via disc playback work).

Two steps forwards, one step back.

Have you tried submitting a ticket to Samsung @OLED4UNME ? I'd have to imagine usb playback on these is such a low percentage of their usage that Samsung may not even know it's an issue.

Also, @New24K , just making sure you know Oppo doesn't make 4k players anymore. You may find one on eBay or somewhere similar, but last time I saw one they were asking well over 4x the original price.

OPPO 203 owners have been known to purchase the UDB-M8500/9500 because of the better Apps onboard. M9500 is current, 203 is now becoming redundant, and unavailable except at inflated prices. For a 1 to 3% difference in PQ, and not requiring DV for the Samsung TV, why bother with the OPPO ?

I was hoping for someone on this owner's thread to first confirm that I wasn't crazy or doing something wrong. I was hoping someone could tell me that they tried subtitles via file playback too, and theirs were also black. I did update the firmware a few months ago whenever it dropped, but it did not help.

The Oppo 203 has NO apps, so anything is better in that department. That was another reason I bought the M9500, is because it could do HDR YouTube videos. It's convenient for quickly trying out videos to see if they are keepers. If I want to save an HDR stream to play later off a USB drive, I use youtube-dl with the front-end GUI called 3D Youtube Downloader. This program allows me to save HDR streams to my computer and even muxes the audio output so the sound plays as well. So technically one can play YouTube HDR files on the Oppo—you just have to save it to hard drive or flash drive first and use USB playback.

Sound input keeps switching when playing blu-ray discs

I have a Samsung Q8FN TV and Samsung UBD-M9500/ZA 4K UHD Blu-Ray Player both hooked up to a Yamaha V373 receiver. The cable box video goes to an HDMI port on the TV and audio goes to HDMI ARC (which the Yamaha designates as AV4). The blu-ray player users HDMI video to the TV and a separate HDMI audio to the receiver.

When I want to watch a DVD, I have to manually set the receiver to HDMI 1 to hear the sound through home theater speakers. However, when I pause the movie, or change the chapter, the receiver automatically switches back to AV4 and I can't hear the sound. I then have to manually change it back to HDMI 1 again.

Is there some way to stop this auto-switching. I assume the AV4 is a default and the receiver wants to auto-switch to that every time any media is "started" even after a pause. [I DISCOVERED THE PROBLEM, SEE REPLY]

You need to disable HDMI ARC/CEC on all devices, and use a Toslink connection between the TV and the Yamaha AVR. Your cable box is likely only capable of Dolby Digital 5.1, and the Q8FN will pass that signal through Toslink (optical) to the AVR. Get a Harmony remote to control all of your devices, and you will be much happier. You don't need a top of the line unit, either...one of their simpler units will do just fine:

Get a Harmony remote to control all of your devices, and you will be much happier. You don't need a top of the line unit, either...one of their simpler units will do just fine:

Thanks for the suggestion, however I discovered the error was even simpler. I had the blu-ray plugged into the TV for video and into the receiver for audio (using both HDMI ports on the player). But I already had an HDMI-ARC running from the TV back to the receiver ARC port as well. Turns out I did not need the HDMI audio cable running from the player at all. That created the conflict where it kept switching between HDMI audio from the player and the same audio being sent back to the receiver thru ARC.

I am trying out the Samsung Smart Remote and it's actually pretty good except it does require the IR line of site to the cable box and player (just like any IR remote would). May have to give the old IR extenders a try or else something like a Harmony. The components are in enclosed cabinets.

Goes to black screen

So just purchased. I have the player running through Denon AVR-S710W then to 4K visio TV. All software up to date.

About every 5-10 minutes, depending, screen goes black. TV says searching for signal, then video comes back on. Trying to trouble shoot. Quick google of the player has tons of responses. General feedback is unfixable. Unit is junk, by another product. Previous non4k player did not have this problem. Same set up. HDMI cables claim the support.

Was hoping that there is actual troubleshoot I can do, since it appears there are a lot of satisfied users on this post.
