I wasn't able to find any WRAL apps for my M9500, but I was able to load it on my Firestick 4K. The Channel 5 sample video I watched looked terrific in 4K streaming quality and the Firestick gives you the option to view it in 8, 10, or 12-bit quality.

Is it safe to assume that over-the-air broadcasts will look as good once it becomes mainstream in a few years?

Other industry insiders have confirmed that Samsung is indeed out of the Blu-ray Player business now, but I haven't found an announcement from Samsung yet. Thanks for the early heads-up.

Given that there's no choice in the matter now, I suppose my next player will be something along the lines of the Panasonic DP-UB9000 when it's time to replace this one. 4K Blu-ray discs continue to increase in availability, so someone has to stay in the market, but it appears our higher-end options are rapidly narrowing.

It seems that 4K streaming is ultimately going to win in the eyes of many manufacturers now, and I would be part of that problem since my ratio is about 1:5 (disc to streaming) for various reasons including selection, convenience, and price. As long as 4K players are available, my physical disc collection will continue to grow.

The actual OTA broadcasts should look as good as the clips in the 4K section of the WRAL app. However, according to the industry people I've dealt with the current plan for US broadcasters is to provide all broadcasts in 1080p with HLG high dynamic range, and let the displays perform the upscaling to 4K. They anticipate a lucrative revenue stream from PPV 4K events, but do not see any justification for implementing 4K broadcasts across their entire spectrum for all programming.

That’s bad news for those people who bought cheap TVs with sucky upscalers. I’d honestly feel better about this if they went native 4K, is it really that much more expensive for them?

To do it end-to-end, it would be. I assisted a few of the local broadcast engineers back in the early days of the ATSC transition, and it took years and substantial sums of money for them to get to where they are now in the local market. Everything from the studio cameras & monitors to the makeup and wardrobe for the on-air talent would be impacted, and they must see a potential return on their investment to justify the expense.

I haven't heard anything locally, but now that WPBT and WXEL have become one here in South Florida it wouldn't surprise me if the PBS stations were first to transition (as they were when the nation moved from NTSC to ATSC). There is no federal mandate this time around, so it may take much longer than it did back then.

I'm considering replacing my Oppo 103D w/a 9500 for two reasons:

1) Have a 4k device that supports Vudu UHD so I can get Atmos audio.

2) Bypass Dolby's heinous prohibition against using DTS NeuralX upmixer on Dolby soundtracks.

Regarding the latter, will I be able to force PCM audio output to achieve 2)?

Also, I've read a few reviews of the 9500 and they don't say anything about tone mapping, which I hoped to also get for use with my JVC X570.

What's the story on that?

Noah

So Samsung gives us HDR10+ on the M9500, but leaves me without the upgrade for my KS9800 to play it? (Despite the somewhat promise to do so. And they haven't made a decent TV since the KS9800, although the 2019 Models might have a proper improvement.)

If I set the 9500 to 1080P video output, I'll still get Atmos audio from Vudu - right?

I wouldn't think it would matter, but you never know.

I have the 8500 UHD Player, would 9500 provide a better picture? I got the new Q80r set and have been thinking about upgrading the player, just not sure if all of them are just basically the same for picture quality. I don't care about audio

They are the exact same players except the m9500 has two HDMI ports, one as a dedicated audio. There's also the capability to stream a disc on the m9500 via wifi to an Android phone/tablet. Picture quality wise they will be the same, assuming you have the M8500 and not a previous model like the K8500 or J8500.

Actually I think it is the k8500, it's the very first one that Samsung put out in 2016.

I think there was an incremental upgrade from the k8500 to the m8500/m9500, maybe someone else knows more but I want to say maybe a 15% better picture quality? That’s up to you if you wanted to upgrade, if it were me I think I’d buy the Pioneer ub820 instead.

Wife wants quality, but also the 3D capability of the K8500 which is more important to her. M8500/9500 - no 3D

I ended up.buying one of these to replace my k8500. Definitely has a nicer picture and the UI is the same as the Q80R. Figured might as well as get the last one Samsung made.

Seems an odd choice. Having owned my K8500 (because it was all that was on sale at the time) with the world's worst remote control, a noisy fan, and numerous other niggles, there's no way I would buy another Samsung player now. YMMV.

This one is definitely 100 times better than the k8500. The remote is just like any recent generation Samsung TV and it's pretty silent. It did have some noise in the first few scenes of Man of Steel UHD but then just normal. I wanted to keep everything Samsung as it just makes interoperability pleasant. The Smart things app works great if I don't want to use remotes.
But yeah the remote on the K8500 was the worst.

Hello,

I am trying to setup my UBD-M9500 to the optimal settings!

Can you push these settings beyond the 18 Gbps bandwidth? Does it adhere (or not) to the HDMI standard in any way?

I wish to set it to 2160p @ 60hz with 10 bits (HDR10) with RGB or 4:4:4
I wish to max out all my settings, but I know that this will go beyond 18 Gbps!
Is this possible? Thanks...

Erik W.

I wish to max out all my settings, but I know that this will go beyond 18 Gbps!
Is this possible? Thanks...
No.

Hey thanks for the advice mrtickleuk,

and I have another question:

I was asking this because I was thinking about upgrading to Spider E-Series HDMI cables that have a bandwidth rating of 21 Gbps. I have Spider C-Series HDMI cables at 18 Gbps currently. So, I was wondering if I were to purchase this cable (Spider E-Series 21 Gbps), would I be able to set my settings higher than 18 Gbps and up to 21 Gbps instead? Is this just a marketing gimmick, and can any hardware actually get up to 21 Gbps with HDMI 2.0? Will buying this cable do any better or good than an 18 Gbps cable instead? Thanks! The main reason I bought the Spider C-Series 18 Gbps cable though is that I did not want to have cheap cables in my expensive home theatre setup.
