Expressed in a different way, if a monitor does not support HDR10+, but it does support DV, will the DP-UB820 somehow intelligently 'convert' that metadata to take advantage of the display's dynamic capabilities?

Or conversely, if you are streaming an HDR10+ movie on Amazon Prime using the DP-UB820, and your monitor only supports DV and HDR10 -- will you be stuck watching HDR10?

The Netflix and Amazon apps on my Sony Z9D monitors DO take advantage of the display's capabilities -- but as you pointed out, that's because they are resident in the monitor.

I realize we'll just have to wait -- I was just hoping someone had asked that question at CES.
No one can answer what the apps on this player will support until Panasonic has more info or it is in user's hands. Streaming doesn't work the way UHD discs do. Discs are required to have a base HDR10 if they support Dolby Vision. No discs at this point have come out with HDR10+. With a disc, you get HDR10 if your display doesn't support DV. So look at Vudu for example. For a while they only supported Dolby Vision. If your source component and/or display didn't support Dolby Vision, there was no HDR. You simply got the base UHD. NF and Amazon only provided DV for a while also. There was no base HDR10 if your display didn't support DV. And this was only available through the displays apps ubtil recently when google and apple came out with their DV devices. You are actually better off getting a separate device for streaming or using the displays internal apps than using the apps from a player. For more info on how streaming services are delivering, best to look at the HDR forum area or the streaming providers forum. This area is for the player hardware.

The article mention DSD support for it's USB input presumably but no mention of MCH on any audio formats on that same input. Clarification would be great on that.

since hdr10+ and DV are competing specs, it's a logical assumption that if your TV doesn't support the feature, whether it's HDR10+ or DV, the UHD will play as HDR10 (if it supports that)
just like now, playing a Dolby Vision-enabled title, for example Fate of the Furious, will play in HDR10 on a UHD player / UHD TV combo that doesn't support Dolby Vision

Will the hdr tone mapping on this player function like dynamic metadata (hdr10+, Dolby Vision?) Or is that just acting to prevent peak brightness clipping?

I have a Sony display that will be getting Dolby Vision but no word on hdr10+ and I'm wondering if this player will give me the benefits of hdr10+ without a compatible display.

I am curious what the price will be. I think that this player will beat the Oppo in an instance, if they choose for the same base as the ub900.

I wouldnt either. Not doing it. A firmware update promise is nothing more than a big fat "maybe you’ll get the update if everything works out and the stars align properly". This player isn’t going to be cheap either so if for some reason it doesn’t get the update then you’re stuck with an expensive player that does NOT play Dolby Vision Discs. Lame.

Honestly, I’m getting sick of the HDR/DV/HDR10/HLG nonsense. Pick one and discard the rest. We need to get this stuff standardized once and for all. It’s a freeging joke.

Not going to happen. Just last week the Blu-ray Disc Association added HDR10+ and SL-HDR2 as an option to the the UHD BD specs. v3.2 spec.

So now those types of HDR can be an option on disc.

I have the DMP-UB900 and absolutely LOVE the PQ, even 1080p looks great.
Any word on how the new 820 will compare in PQ - did people see it at CES to compare? or will the 820 be below the 900 and only a possible 920 (as mentioned by someone earlier) offer better PQ?
Also to me a huge new feature is the voice control via Alexa or Google Home - any word on whether the 900 will get this feature via a firmware upgrade?
Also (slightly off topic) what are the differences between the 2016 and 2017 versions of the UB900?
thx

No word, but Panasonic had great image quality for years.

As far as the 900, it is the same both years, just a two-year model.

HDTVtest discusses the new players. I haven’t heard anyone mention the “high precision chroma processor” for any of these players. Right now I believe only the UB900 has it and its arguably it’s most important feature.

Update:
Hometheater forum mentions all the new models will have it.

I?m wondering if this player will play ball and update regarding the Sony TV DV issues? I?m still going to upgrade to a DV Sony Tv down the road despite what is goin on? There is too much upside to Sony TV performance despite DV. I?m hoping it does cause I?m not that impressed with the Sony DV Blu-ray player that they are coming out with, X700!

you should post this in the TV thread, I doubt any UHD player is going to help much, especially without good cables (18gbps hdmi cables)

It has the newer version of the HCX, which is created in conjunction with Panasonic Hollywood Labs, just like their older and highly accurate Uniphier SoC was. Panny has always done a great job with chroma in their in-house chips.

https://www.panasonic.com/uk/consume...p-ub820eb.html

Check out "4K High Precision Chroma Processing" at the bottom and "HCX".

Seems it might up for preorder in July now. I've got the UB200 with the current HCX, and it is a good little player that was cheap. Will hold me over till the 820 comes.

so the 9000 is the high-end market player; while the 820 will probably be sold in stores?
both with DV and HDR10+ playback

the 9000 & 820 appear to have 7.1 outs, with the 9000 having better internal components and high-end looks
doesnt the 820 come with the same HCX processor for 4k chroma processing?

so the 9000 will probably be $1000 and the 820 around $400-$500, I assume

so by reviewing this link, is the only difference between the 420 & 820 that the 820 has 7.1 audio outs? if that's the case I might go for the 420

nevermind, the 420 supports hdr10+ but not DV
so it looks like I'll be going with the 820 when it comes out this spring/summer
