Sony UBP-X700 UHD Blu-ray player at CES 2018

The Sony UBP-X700 UHD Blu-ray player is the company's first to support Dolby Vision HDR, though that will come in a firmware update this summer.

Looking forward to the information. It is getting hard to follow all the updates however with the money to stay current with hardware.

Unhappy

Looking at the photos on the Sony site the 700 has 12 volt input, which means a power brick, rules out this new player for me!

I gotta check that out but that?s like being cheap. The unit don?t look sturdy like the 800! I?m considering the new Panasonic down the road when I go DV

And no word yet if the ubp-x800 will be supported by Sony? It's not like it's hardware is drastically different, seeing as it's advertised as the next model down from the x800.

That's the point, their inexpensive player, UBP-X800 only lacked DV last year and listed for around 300 dollars and was a lot less during the holiday season. If they can add DV to something like that this time around it could come in around 350-400 dollars list. Starts to make Oppo look expensive. And I'm not an Oppo hater.

Has there been an official statement from Sony saying they were dropping all support on last years models, or that there was drastic changes in hardware in the newer models to prevent such features from being supported on older hardware? Because if the answer is yes, I didn't here it from any Sony representatives, or even people with insider information?

The 2017 model doesn't have the software chip to upgrade it per most experts here. Even if it could, Sony will want you to purchase the new model. I held off buying for this exact reason; oh well

I'm most likely taking back my 75x900e for a 2018 QLED model. Pathetic that even the people who purchased their premium models have not gotten support yet, and have to wait till mid summer, if they get it at all, when lower tier brands like TCL had support since the beginning of last year. HDR+ doesn't even have same stringent hardware requirements as DV. That's suppose to be one of the selling points.

The press release for the X900F also says that DV support will be added with a firmware update later this year. I find it a bit silly if they don't have DV support ready by release.

such a disappointment...

lets stop for a minute and think people, why would you go down the ladder and name it UBP-X700, it should be UBP-X900 if its an successor, not vice versa

it comes in a 12inch/32cm format instead of last years full width, home cinema is also about aesthetics, they seem to have gone with a shrinking type of design

who knows what this means in terms of performance, sturdiness or AV quality, it fits nowhere with their already existing line of products

been waiting for this player since i heard ubp-x800/x1000es wont be updated with dolby vision, however, at this time it seems like ubp-x800 still is the superior player

this new player indeed has a power brick looking at the 12v input, it a lot smaller, probably made out of cheaper materials and lots of plastics

looking at last years models, they were bragging about the superb build quality over and over, even published pictures of the internals, showcasing all the superior design materials

this year theres none of that, gets you thinking, seems like they announced this player for the sole purpose of just accomodating dolby vision

they also announced the STR-DH790 reciever which is way beyond my understanding since it seems to feature exactly the same features as last years model, the STR-DN1080, it even recieved a dolby vision passthrough update last year

i dont see where the STR-DH790 fita where the STR-DN1080 doesnt, to me it seems like they have wasted resources developing this totally unecessary reciever, instead of putting all efforts into correcting last years issues with a better designed ubp-x800, calling it ubp-x900

its only logical for them to announce yet another bluray player, probably next year, correcting all their wrong steps taken this year, naming a successor the way youre supposed to name them

ubp-x700 sounds so cheap, and it sounds 4 years old, looks like it as well

i personally bought last years ubp-x800 straight away when i saw this annoouncement, sitting back waiting for them to develop something that people wants, the ubp-x900

i was firmly believing that they would deliver this year

seems not, just look at the new remote..

Yup, everything you said is what we're all thinking. Imagine some poor sap without technical knowledge of these models decides to buy the latest player, thinking it would go well with his brand, spanking new Sony Dolby Vision supported TV. So naturally he goes for the ubp-x800 or x1000es. He runs home, sits there installing it, waiting another 10 to 15 min downloading the latest update, with the hope of watching a few DV compatible movies. He puts it in, automatically thinks it's displaying DV, since no user prompt comes up to tell him otherwise. Great!, He thinks, till a few weeks go by and he's at the store again to pick up another title, and casually mentions to a friend that he should get the same player. "It's so cool, the latest thing!" friend agrees, till a customer representative mentions that it's HDR10 only. Joe buyer is in denial, since he has a few DV titles already that can never be fully utilized. Not look too good for Sony the next time he decides to make a big TV purchase...

Looks like some japanese manufacturers are caught in a licensing issue with Dolby laboratories and there's some dispute over the royalty fees for every DV compatible Blu ray player or TV sold.
Sony is still not having DV functionality out of the box and still wanting you to wait for firmware updates.

I'll probably be compelled to replace my UBP-X1000ES this year to get DV. It definitely won't be with this thing.

So why would they not drop it and upgrade all Sony TV's from last year, on up, to HDR10+ and be done with it? It seems counterproductive if they were to gamble on just HDR10 and HLG to get them through the year, when high paying customers are enjoying better, right now, from their competitors. Not to mention off brands have had it since day one, and to add insult to injury, might support HDR10+ in an upcoming firmware update too.

This plays SACD discs (as does the 800), but the 800 also plays DVD-AUDIO discs, and I can't see any mention of this in the specifications.

I wonder if there is any other functionality lost with this new model?

Get with it Sony. This player looks cheap and it still doesn’t have a front display. I was hoping for a new Sony player this year but it appears that the new Panasonic UB820 will be the player to get, which is ok as I’ve always liked Panasonic.

looks like the new Panasonc is the way to go (for future proofing), not only does it support all the new HDR formats (HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision) but also retains 3D playback
