Have you contacted Denon support, or Sony? I feel like we've given about as many suggestions as we can at this point.

Living Room: Sony XBR65X930D, Sony HTCT780, Base PS4, Philips BDP7501
Bedroom: LG OLED55C6P, Denon AVR-X1300W (5.1.2), PS4 Pro, Sony UBP-X700, Atomos Ninja Inferno

@willdude , this is because the ATV sends Atmos as Dolby MAT 2.0, however, when you bitstream Atmos, such as from the x700, the Denon doesn't output Atmos unless you have height channels assigned.

Hm, interesting, so there is at least a qualitative difference between the Atmos signals from the ATV and the Sony.

In any case, I've found something of a solution to this. What I didn't realize is that the Denon in some way is dictating to the Sony what input signal to send, whereas I thought the Sony would just send Atmos no matter what if you selected that audio track. If I set the amp config to 9.1 and enable height speakers, even though they're not actually there, one of the selectable sound modes becomes "Atmos", and when I select that, the input signal from the Sony changes from TrueHD to Atmos. (The ATV doesn't work like this, presumably because of the MAT vs. bitstream difference.)

Thanks for the tips!

Yes @willdude , the difference is that the Atmos from the ATV is lossy (and lower bitrate, as it is from any streaming service), within the MAT 2.0 container, whereas the Atmos bitstreamed from a disk will almost always be lossless TureHD Atmos.

By the time lossy Atmos reaches Denon, it has already been decoded to PCM 7.1 and only the objects are sent in MAT. That is how I understand it. At any rate, aTV sends bed channels already decoded (PCM 7.1) and not as bitstream (in contrast to X700).

I hear a lot about freezing issues with this unit but I've experienced that maybe twice so far with the unit I've had since launch. A lot more reliable than the X800M1, that's for certain.

Spoiler!

I've had a few UHD discs (that were brand new out of the box) freeze up on me. A quick eject and wipe down (despite them not even really being dirty) and it played fine. Very strange.

Other than that strange quirk, I've had no real issues. Like a lot of people, I really wish Sony would activate auto-detect for Dolby Vision, but that's more of an inconvenience than anything else.

Do you use the apps on the sony player or the native apps on your tv for digital streaming? Is there a notable difference?

I have a Sony A9G. I use the TV apps, because the BD player is hooked up to my Yamaha 1050. I can’t get Dolby Vision through my Yamaha AVR, but I can if I use the TV’s apps.

But other than that, I didn’t really notice a difference. At least not with Netflix. But even after I upgrade my receiver, I would still prefer the TVs apps, so I don’t have to toggle the BD player’s Dolby Vision on or off, depending on what it is I am watching.

I am considering purchasing the UBP-X700 to connect to my 55" Sony X900F TV. I have not yet started purchasing 4K movie disks but have several 1080p blu ray disks which I currently play using a Sony PS3.

How is the 1080p blu ray disk picture quality compared to the Sony PS3? Also, do I need to connect the UBP-X700 to one of the full bandwidth HDMI ports on the X900F? Only two of the four HDMI inputs on the X900F are full bandwidth. Thanks!

You probably won't see much if any benefit in upscaling 1080p BluRay on the X700 vs the PS3. The 900F will upscale to 4K. For the most part, the lower bandwidth HDMI ports on the 900F (HDMI 1, HDMI 4) will be sufficient. The only exception would be for 4:4:4 content at 60 FPS, of which there is very little content on the market. Keep in mind that if you're passing the Bluray player through an AVR it won't matter.

Thanks PlanetAVS! The PS3 has been very good as a blu ray disc player and I was wondering if the picture quality of the X700 (without the upscaling) was as good. Glad to know I can also connect it to the lower bandwidth ports.

If you do start buying or renting 4K discs, you, of course, will need to connect the X700 to a full bandwidth port AND you'll need a premium certified HDMI cable to do the connecting. I think the X700's video quality is slightly better than the PS3, but maybe I'm just imagining it.

I looked through this thread some but it is so massive that I figure I would just post my issue. Just received my X700. I have a non 4k AVR and a new Vizio M Series Quantum M558-G1 TV. So I have hooked up the X700 using the dual HDMI outs on the player...HDMI 1 to my TV and HDMI 2 (audio only) to my AVR. I also have my AVR going out with an HDMI cable into the HDMI 1 port on my TV. With everything connected this way I get only video when I have my TV on the input that my X700 is connected to. No audio. Of course when I switch to the input on my AVR that I have HDMI 2 (audio only) of the X700 connected to I get audio but no video. But...if I unplug the HDMI cable going out from my AVR into the HDMI 1 port on my TV...BAM...I get audio and video when I switch to the input on my TV that the X700 is connected to...from the HDMI 1 out on the player. I know. It's all confusing as hell. And perplexing. Has anyone else run across this problem? It may be buried in this thread somewhere. I'm just looking for answers to this weird issue!

I have this setup on my system and it works fine. The first thing is making sure you have the correct inputs selected on both the TV and the AVR, and that these aren't over-ridden by CEC or maybe the AVR thinking there's an ARC connection and so trying to take the audio feed from the TV. Hard to make any more comment without knowing what your AVR is.

I don't have any arc capability on my AVR, but I've chosen to connect it to a non-ARC port on the TV (HDMI4 in my case) just to avoid any chance of strange handshake issues occurring. Your TV has ARC on HDMI1, so if you don't need this for anything, maybe change the connection from the AVR to a different HDMI input on the TV (or just do it as a test even if you do want to use ARC)

My setup is as follows:

X700 HDMI1 -> Sony A9F TV HDMI2 (non-eARC). I select the HDMI2 input this is connected to on the TV, tv audio is set OFF. I don't select the HDMI port that the AVR is connected to on the TV, the picture comes from the X700.

X700 HDMI2 -> Denon AVR890. I select the HDMI input on the AVR this is connected to as the audio source.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking it may have to do with ARC. My receiver is the Yamaha RX-V671. Anyway...I think I have solved the problem. I ordered up the Yamaha RX-V683! It will be here tomorrow.

I'll be upgrading my family room viewing by finally getting a 4k tv (LG or Sony OLED 55") and I picked up an upgrade to my Amazon Firestick the other day, that is, a Firestick 4k (was all of $25 on sale).

I want to take as much advantage of 4k and it's video codecs/features (my audio in that room is only so-so, with decent center channel and in-wall fronts and ceiling surrounds that we inherited from previous owner). I've picked up an inexpensive but decent Denon AVR that passes 4k (Denon S540BT) so I think I'm ok there.

Will getting the X700 take care of my disc needs and make sure I get Dolby Vision? And with the apps in either the LG OLED or the X700 do I even need the Firestick 4K for anything (I guess Prime Video, which is something we haven't watched in quite awhile anyway)?
Thx
Ted

P.S. All this goes out the windows for my new home theater/music room (my avatar was from my OHIO room, now moved to Denver) being designed currently for my walk out basement area. There I'll need pj, Atmos, etc. That's for another thread at another time.

You can get Prime video on the LG OLED or in the X700, but I use my FireStick 4K for its entry to Amazon's over-the-air DVR which I use all the time.

You should be watching some of Prime's original programming. Shows like Bosch, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Man in the High Castle, The Boys, Jack Ryan are very entertaining.

Hi all- I’m new to this forum and getting used to the navigation. I apologize if this topic has been covered.
I have a Sony UBP-X700, Denon AVR-X4500H, and Sony XBR-77A9G. I set the Denon and the TV to Enhanced HDMI. It plays movies, but it won’t display the X700 menu. If I change the TV HDMI to Standard the menu displays. I’ve verified my firmware is current and did a factory reset in the X700. Any ideas?

Are you using a Premium Certified cable from the player to the receiver and from the receiver to the TV? If either of those connections are using older HDMI cables, you'll run into problems.

Man, my X700's Youtube app won't output HDR. 1/2 the time it simply plays the video in SDR (the same exact video plays fine 100% of the time via Roku Ultra or LG C9s onboard app) the other 1/2 it will start to play HDR and after a few seconds, the screen will freeze but the sound keeps playing.

Tested and repeated on 2 brand new TVs (Sammy Q60R and LG C9) with 3 brand new certified Monoprice cables 3ft/6ft. Connected straight to both TVs, as well as connected via Denon X3500H to both TVs.

Exactly this; only HDMI cables that are Premium Certified, with the holographic sticker on the packaging for authentication (I use these, or I also saw my local Walmart has some other brand with the sticker for about the same price), will guarantee compatibility with a 4K/60Hz signal (such as the x700 menu screen).

Smooth Motion/Soap Opera

I have a question for all owners of this player. So I had been using a Sony PlayStation 3 as my Blu-Ray player for ten years until mine broke about a year ago (and that had perfect 24p playback). So I purchased the X800. I am super sensitive to motion interpolation/soap opera/smooth motion effect and really can only watch movies at the theater or on a DLP projector which does the best for me for matching the motion of 24p, the way most movie theaters do (my fiancee thinks I am crazy and cannot see any difference). So the first thing I noticed with the X800 is the application of some motion interpolation/smooth motion and I can clearly see that motion is smoothed out on that player. Really noticeable when people turn their heads or the camera pans. So I decided to try the X700 which unfortunately seems to have it also and after reading further seems to share the same engine as the X800. I tried looking through the X800 and X700 threads but could not find anyone else really noticing the issue. Is there anyone who has noticed it and either found a solution or found another player that doesn't have it. I was considering trying a Panasonic but I do not want to spend that much for the UB820. I guess for now I'm going to pick up another used PS3 or try an LG UHD player or something.

I'm gonna post this in the X800 thread also.

Thanks,
B

Did you ensure that its outputting 24p? At 24p there could be no motion smoothing done by the player.. It would have to be your projector doing the smoothing. If it is outputting 60p it could look different but there is no motion smoothing done by the player itself.
